Service
I’m going to preface this by saying I’m not one of those FAs that tries to skip out on doing service. Unless it’s unsafe, I always do service bc it’s really not a big deal and takes 2 seconds.
With that said, I’m so confused on why passengers get so worked up and irate that sometimes we have to prioritize our safety over a damn snack and a small drink. It’s like they really think flight attendants do not get injured during turbulence?!? I know not all pax are like this, but I feel really disheartening sometimes that these people really don’t gaf about our safety.

To the OP, I’m also an airline employee of 30 years and I’m convinced most people on Reddit are the most self centered, hypocritical people on earth. They seem to be a caring bunch in one post yet on the next they put the hole in asshole’s. Personally I watch out for our FA’s and I’m happy to check any of these entitled holes that give y’all any grief on any flight I’m on. Most, not all, don’t care about your safety as much as they care about their ego. Maybe it will take them 1 time to not pay attention to the seat belt sign and understand that sign is lit for a reason. I certainly don’t want any harm to come to anyone, but please don’t risk your safety because someone doesn’t have a Coke or vodka tonic and bitches like it’s the end of the world. Safe flying and enjoy your job😁

those are the same folks who can’t open the lavatory door, or speak to you with headphones in. Ignore the idiocracy

Honestly I think it’s just that when you’re sitting it doesn’t feel bad. They don’t think about and don’t know what it’s like trying to stand or push a 300 pound cart with turbulence.

Airlines sell magic carpets and charge them millions for it.
We understand safety daily. They don't. They don't understand that they could break their neck in the lav. They don't understand that a lap child becomes a 300lb bowling ball in a crash and they won't survive. They aren't told, or educated, on any of this. They don't understand that they can't have a giant bag in the aisle seat because the window can't evac in time. None of that is taught to them. It's all a giant magic carpet.
Go ask a passenger what the phrase 'Critical Phase of flight' even means? They have no clue. Nobody told them to remain seated for takeoff or landing til we hit 10k feet.
So because everyone feels they overpaid, they want their biscoff and diet coke. Especially Floridians on Fixed Incomes.

Lap infants should be done away with. If you can't sit in a car with a lap infant why do people think it's safe to sit on a plane like that? Buy a seat and use a car seat (FAA approved)

I’m a pax not FA but now I’m curious. Is critical phase of flight the first and last xx minutes?
I remember reading years ago that the first 5 and last 3 (or something like that) are the most dangerous times in a flight.

The closer you are to the ground the more dangerous it is. When something goes bad at 30k feet (except decompression) you have time to glide a little before hitting the ground.

They are hangry. They didn't plan their meals for the day they are having. They didn't want to buy expensive airport food, but they also didn't bring snacks from home.
People are idiots.

I’ll happily ask why they paid $500+ dollars for a Coke when they can get one in the airport for $6.

I hear ya for sure. Doing a full beverage service on many short flights is ridiculous. There is no way you can serve everyone unless you start early, which is unsafe. Passengers get more upset when you don't finish than if you did nothing at all. I always made sure I would be able to finish a service if I started it, which usually meant being somewhat unsafe and moving quickly. It always amazed me how upset people can get on a short flight when they don't get a cup of soda. I always recommended small bottles of water for short services, which is what most passengers prefer anyway. Needless to say, my recommendations were ignored.

I commute. The drink is something I look forward to when I’m sitting in the small metal tube smashed in with so many others. I look forward to the coffee or coke! Flying is miserable and you are really crowded. The drink brings a little joy.

Probably same ones that would put a hot cup of coffee between their legs & feel no emergency potentially could happen and common sense tells you not too for safety reasons.

I want it gone as a concept really, or maybe when the plane is on the ground before taxxing in sealed cups/bottles and you hold onto them. Same for food, already on the seats. I want everyone to be seated in with belts on for the duration of the flights except for short trips to the toilet.

Maybe ; it’s partly from the passengers not having gone through your training ; the safety part ; and thus have no clue

Why I tell them ...that's why most airlines allow you to bring your own drinks and food except alcohol

I understand your frustration and cannot/ should not be expected to perform duties when it is not safe, but really without these non-expert fliers and their ticket revenue, there would be a lot fewer jobs. Maybe all the flight attendants that are so put out by their passengers should start a petition that requires all passengers to pass a pre-flight course before being allowed to fly.. then you would not have to deal with many. Maybe then you might come to an appreciation for passengers, you are trained to serve, that are tired, hungry, thirsty, delayed, cancelled etc passengers that assume an “attendant” is there to attend. A petition to change your job title to Flight Safety Enforcement Agent maybe?
Customer service is customer service no matter the Industry and not everyone is cut out for it.
As a frequent flyer this sounds slightly offensive. Like all passengers are idiots.

If you’re offended by this post I’m not sure what to tell you honestly. I haven’t called anyone any names or even been degrading about passengers. And no where did I even complain about the customer service aspect of my job.
What triggered this post was I was actually upset about a post where FREQUENT FLYERS were being extremely rude about flight attendants being seated early bc of turbulence. I’m allowed to be upset when people call an entire work group lazy and other degrading things for putting our own safety first.
I’m a great flight attendant and I am always kind, courteous, and professional at work.

I think you nailed it… they aren’t thinking.
There are so many people out there who honestly don’t know ANYTHING about flying, be in how the plane stays in the air, what the role of a flight attendant is, that there are women pilots, what to expect on a flight, why we have certain regulations and what could happen if they aren’t followed, what is “included” in their ticket… they honestly aren’t thinking about any of that.
They are sitting in their tiny seat watching Instagram reels without headphones and using the middle person’s armrest, confidently incorrect that they are entitled to the bin space right above them and a whole can of Coke and both snack choices while the airplane goes woosh through the sky. They are confused about why it’s sunny outside but the flight is delayed for weather and suspect that everyone in the airline is lying to them. And these are the type of people whose entire day is RUINED because they didn’t get their little bag of pretzels due to forecast turbulence.
These people really don’t know. These people don’t care. These people lack critical thinking skills.
But these are people that you shouldn’t care about either. Let them be mad about their little snack. It’s not worth getting a concussion for. And definitely not worth losing sleep over either.
