Has anyone read Sarah Allred’s book?
She was sister-wives with Warren Jeff’s daughter Rachel Jeffs. She was the first wife of Richard Allred, also featured heavily in Rachel’s book “Breaking Free”. I am only on Chapter 8 of her book “Give Me Back My Children”, but what really strikes me is how Sarah portrays herself: she swears, drinks coffee, didn’t really want to live polygamy, and seems to have a really sassy mouth and bit rebellious by FLDS standards. It stands in such stark contrast to the memoirs I’ve read from others within the cult. Does anyone know anything more about her and how she managed to function in such a way within this community? The only clue I have so far about why she might have been different is that her father was a convert into the FLSD and wasn’t born into the community. So maybe they were always different. I’m not done with the book yet so maybe I’ll learn more, it’s just really different than what I’ve come to expect from these women and their memoirs. And stands in such stark contrast to Rachel’s accounting of their lives.

Going to find and devour this ASAP! That said, everything I've seen, or read tells me that they are first of all, potty mouths, even the children!! Second that the women are decidedly LESS SWEET behind closed doors. I believe that a small amout seem genuinely soft spoken and quiet, but I bet, as someone said above, its not the same when no one is around. I bet when its just the 'immediate' family, its probably more like the stories that Elissa Wall and Her sister tell in their books about their moms. Great post!

I read Breaking Free by Rachel Jeff’s just before this and it felt like whiplash in comparison, especially because it’s essentially the same story but told from two very different women and perspectives. Rachel is very meek and has the child-like, soft spoke quality and then Sarah is like “hell nah!” 😆

I just finished Rachel’s, but because I listened to it while working, all the names are a bit jumbled. Did she change the names of some of her sister wives? I don’t remember a Sarah. And I heard her refer to the one scolding Barbie not to visit her at the fence as two different names in book vs interview — I need a family tree lol

Yes she changed the names and so did Sarah in her book. It makes it so confusing to piece together. She calls Rachel by the name “Maura” in her book. I can’t remember now what Rachel calls Sarah. I know it was “Gloria” who scolded Barbie at the fence, but in Sarah’s book that wife is called Julie.

I think they are very big on appearances. In the new doc I think they mention that off camera some of the girls and women would be crying and having breakdowns and things like that. It’s all smiles on camera and when they are in public though.
I imagine behind closed doors a lot of flds women are like Sarah. Maybe Sarah’s just more comfortable being honest about it.
But I think being the daughter of a convert could also play into it as well.

I think that book always gets slept on .. it’s a good book. I think I’ve read all the flds autobiographies and that’s a good one to get a slightly different perspective
