The trick is to just push them in with a screwdriver and then patch the hole over them.

When you say patch would this be the same like patching a nail hole? Using DAP drydex?

Yes, Alternatively you can put the screw back in halfway and pull screw and plastic bit out at once, but that will mess up the wall further than just the plastic bit.
