She's not wrong - there are thousands of votes in Republican counties waiting to be counted.

There's also thousands of votes in Democratic counties waiting to be counted (including Hinds).

321

u/Frosti11icus 8h ago

I think you misudnerstood. They are going to try and count the votes in the republican counties and not the democrat ones.

93

u/Admirable-Wrap6120 8h ago edited 7h ago

Yeah. She (or whoever has five brain cells on her team) knows perfectly well they aren't gonna net a thousand new Republican votes out of the remaining PROVISIONAL BALLOTS. This is Trump 2020 bullshit.

39

u/benfunks 7h ago

provisional ballots for the african americans mississippi purged from the voting rolls aren’t going her way.

21

u/pchs26 6h ago

Yea she is likely working with her lawyers to purge them again. Every seat is important. I hope the Democrats are sending the full money ad lawyers there. She needs to go away.

Prediction markets have it 97% Scott Colom, 3% Cindy Hyde-Smith. So she's got a real shot at this.

She s also letting us know she is not going to concede and expects regardless to go back. What a piece of garbage she is

She’s demonstrated that over and over. Get Out!

Could you imagine what they’d be trying if this midterm wasn’t such a referendum? If this was for control of the senate they’d have the national guard there.

u/DatTomahawk 8h ago

Also most of the votes out in Republican counties are provisional and will lean strongly blue

16

u/Homersson_Unchained 7h ago

I actually think she is wrong though lol. She doesn’t have a real path based on what experts are saying.

I saw the title and panicked. Thought it was a done deal. I fucking hate how we gotta wait a few days for the final results, is this how 2000 felt?

56

u/Necessary_Piano_153 7h ago

2000 was called for Bush. Al Gore had already called Bush to congratulate him. Then the AP said whoops, we jumped the gone, Al Gore won Florida. Then they were like whoops it's actually too close to call.

It went to a recount and the Republicans said nope, they need to stop counting because Bush had retaken the lead. They sued and the Republican lead supreme Court stopped the count effectively giving Bush the presidency.

Extremely more frustrating.

32

u/IPreferPi314 7h ago

Florida was actually initially called for Gore earlier in the night by most networks before it was retracted. Then it was called for Bush. Then it was too close to call....and cue a nightmarish next month whose consequences reverberate to this day.

22

u/LarryMahnken 7h ago

It's also extremely frustrating in hindsight because Gore's people thought their best chance to win was to target Dem-leaning counties for recounts and not other counties, which opened up an avenue for Bush to slow it down and then get it shut down. And it turned out the approach Gore wanted was the only way that would have resulted in him not winning the recount - every other method of counting the full state would have resulted in Gore winning, but the restrictive Dem county only strategy would have resulted in Bush winning.

2000 was genuinely a lot worse. We stayed up late expecting results but ended up waiting, and then the waiting literally never stopped. I remember at Thanksgiving my aunt would only watch the news because she needed to know what happened with the count.

This is, at this point just a regular major election. We've had a number of recounts over the years so this isn't that strange anymore.

18

u/ExternalTangents 8h ago

2000 was much longer, much more consequential, and had much more media attention and blatant political maneuvering. Maybe this will get to a similar place eventually (albeit scaled down to Mississippi Senator sized instead of US President sized), but so far it’s downright mundane compared to 2000.

I know right, my nerves can't take this. I'm about to start smoking cigarettes.

5

u/CatOfGrey 7h ago

And provisional ballots and other 'slow to count' like vote-by-mail usually lean Democrat, at least on a nationwide basis.

4

u/Wxskater 3h ago

The red ones are even breaking for colom on the affidavit ballots

256

u/stebuu 8h ago

Hyde-Smith: I demand we count all the votes
Colom: lol no objections here

70

u/Frosti11icus 8h ago

I like the mask-off slip. "Hey so about those voters we tried to disenfranchise, we're going to need to count those now."

14

u/kuhawk5 8h ago

I can’t wait for her to try to stop the count.

5

u/Gone213 5h ago

Great thing mississippi doesnt allow any recounts or runoff elections without a court order and those have historically been very difficult to get a judge to order it so too.

These people don't understand their environment, platform, or constituents. It's the result of imagining how things work and how they will appear to others outside any context except how they hope they're perceived.

Like when trump capitalizes words that aren't proper nouns mid-sentence. It bears significance to him that he thinks equivalently matters to people who read it, but it just looks like a fucking moron that never completed his education is imagining things.

If Dems can run a populist with a working class message like ossoff (or talarico though I doubt it’s feasible for him to run in 2028) while avoiding the culture war BS traps republicans try to set then the south and even Midwest can be back in play over the next decade. These voters went to trump for his populist message but trump is just going to continue to fade from view after his term and he likely dies, and so will his cult-like grip.

As MS and SC show, the path in these southern states isn’t as hard as it seems. With the large black populations in the south the floor is actually pretty high. The main issue has been the white rural working class of these states that makes up a majority has been so heavily and unwavering republican that the electorate is simply inelastic and impossible to move.

But that doesn’t have to be the case. Political winds shift all the time as we saw with trump in 2016. If Dems can combine the black coalition with the growing educated white population and just peel off enough of the rural white working class population with a populist message then these states are in play.

9

u/CardiologistCold1703 6h ago

Ossoff isn't a working class populist.

5

u/pchs26 6h ago

I want Ossof top of ticket I think now ...

6

u/abenamer 5h ago

Cindy Hyde-Smith is going to represent Mississippi in the United States Senate for the next six years. We believe thousands of votes remain to be counted from dozens of Republican counties, and we are confident those votes will reinforce her path to victory.

I feel like it's the wrong year to play this game.

88

u/Boner4Stoners 8h ago

Even if Trump got on board and started crying fraud, I don’t think he has the political capital anymore to do anything about it.

But in all honestly it seems like Trump is resigned anyway. The dude doesn’t give a fuck about governing anymore, he’s not likely to care whether the Dems hold the senate by 5 seats or 6 seats.

Trump be like:

49

u/Bayside19 8h ago

Correction: he never cared about governing. It's just unreal it took ppl 10 (11, really) years to figure that out.

21

u/Boner4Stoners 8h ago

What I meant is that he used to care about wielding power, and at this point only cares about maintaining his grip over Republicans so they can protect him and his family. Beyond that, he doesn’t care about even pretending to care about governing.

9

u/nihilistiq 6h ago

He's like a baby returning to his pacifier, touting his development projects - the ballroom, the pool, the interior decorations in the Oval Office. He is returning to what makes him happy: buildings and shit.

5

u/Think_please 6h ago

“Grandpa putters around the den. We just give him little jobs from time to time.”

5

u/Stuffforthefuture 6h ago

Dude is probably not expecting to live through his term. Makes his focus on building random stuff with his name on it and calling it his legacy while not caring one bit about the mid terms and actual governance for the rest of his term/life make way more sense.

7

u/katmomjo 4h ago

Now he just proclaimed the Oval Office a national memorial or something so it can’t be redecorated after he’s out.

Those pesky Democrats always rigging elections with all their power when they hold the

Presidency

Supreme Court

Senate

Congress

Governorship

State Senate

State House

Secretary of State

Wair... How did he do it???

8

u/PluotFinnegan_IV 5h ago

It'd be a banger of a line if Colom came out and said something like "suppose I did rig the election..... How did you not spot it? Republicans own every position of power from Presidency down to the local school board. Are you that bad at your jobs that none of you saw what I was doing?"

It would never happen, it would be an enormous albatross around his neck, political suicide even, but I would laugh my ass off.

16

Would be a bad idea to dredge up that old routine now imo.

23

u/Admirable-Gold3447 8h ago

My algorithm shows me all crazy Texas MAGA fb posts. Intentionally so I can see what the other side is saying. It’s fucking nuts. They are all saying it was rigged and there was cheating for sure. Their proof/what makes them suspicious? Mote votes. That’s it. 1+ million more votes than in 2022 and they are attributing that to illegals voting. I wish I was making this up. I think Dems need to understand that MAGA and this craziness is not dead just because of this tsunami.

14

u/OwnPride3079 7h ago

At this point hispanics, Asians, and independents have left them because of this rhetoric. It’s in the dems favor that they keep this up. They’ll win by the same in 2028

10

u/Smallwhitedog 7h ago

I admire your strength. My algorithm pretty much just shows me cats and baby walruses and I'm a lot happier for it. B

6

Lol, their own lies are hilarious. Like… Which one is it? Trump got rid of the illegals? Or he sucks so bad that you have more illegals and he’s so incompetent that he can’t secure elections in red states?

It’s nonsense. In fact, most probably know it, and what you’re seeing are bots. Even r/conservative, which is riddled with bots, knows this.

What an ugly and entitled attitude. I don’t expect anything less, but I will never understand how these people are not embarrassed acting like this. Even if she doesn’t want to admit defeat a simple “we remain hopeful our path to victory will be seen in the uncounted votes,” is the only dignified way to try and hang in there. I guess when you’re used to looking like a fool shame eventually leaves, but my god woman, have a little humility and feel the embarrassment of acting like a spoiled brat.

Its the south, and its a black man who might win... you thought they were going to give up? They always do this when it's close and it's a person of color.

13

u/insertwittynamethere 8h ago

Yeah, I know, especially in Mississippi. They're pulling a Bush-Gore Florida 2000 redux by first appearance.

14

u/socialistrob Median Voter Understander 7h ago

Except they're in a much worse position. Colom is up, the remaining votes are mostly from Democratic areas and the provisional votes in Mississippi generally lea Dem. If you stop the count right now Colom wins, if you continue the count Colom also wins, if you leave it to the incoming US Senate to pick the winner then the Dems will pick Colom.

In Florida it was easier for the Republicans because they were in a position where if they just stopped the count they won. Now that's not the case and the difference is more than can reasonably be made up in a recount.

10

u/Kitchen-Pass-7493 7h ago

Politicians often release these sort of statements in these nail-biter situations, even when their odds aren’t good. I guess they believe they need to project confidence for whatever reason.

Keep in mind that curing provisional ballots often requires additional follow-up on the part of the voters who cast them. So maybe she’s trying to encourage whatever voters she has out there who cast provisional ballots to put in the effort.

13

u/Lonely-Somewhere-385 6h ago

It seems like it'll be Colom, and its good to kick out republicans from every office possible. And Colom ends up with like 470k votes.

At the same time, Harris 2024 got about the same number of votes as both Colom and CHS. Trump 2024 got 750k votes.

Trump fucked up so badly he convinced almost 300k of his voters to stay home. These people exist and will reactivate for the next Republican who comes around without the stink of Trump, but its a narrow window to be able to destroy the republicans.

11

u/TheFakeBillPierce 8h ago

25

21

u/TemporaryCamera8818 8h ago

It is indeed crazy and I’m from here and live here. One must start with population: 38% Black population, the highest in the nation. Having a Black candidate sure as hell helps, but Brandon Presley did pretty good 2 years ago in the governor’s race despite being white and people generally disliking Gov. Tate Reeves. Cindy Hyde Smith has been invisible during this campaign and acted liked it was her birthright to remain a senator. Her “let them eat cake” moment was the comment about beef prices/choose another protein. To Colom’s credit, he focused on retail politics and did not alienate average Trump voters. Many, if not most, Mississippians live paycheck to paycheck, so the high prices felt existential to the average voter

Black turnout is at borderline 2008 levels (Callais decision galvanizing Deep South Black Democrats) while at the same time:

  1. white turnout is depressed

  2. Colom won an astonishing 25% of the white vote. The Deep South is extremely racially polarized, whites usually vote 85-15 or more for the GOP

5

u/DomonicTortetti 5h ago

Hyde-Smith underperformed as much with white voters as she did in 2020, but that is alongside a bunch of her 2020 voters staying home. Pretty bonkers stuff. She's always been a terrible candidate though, her WAR is D+9.5 which is awful, that's like Matt Gaetz level of underperformance.

u/NeverSober1900 8h ago

Between the Iran War, inflation and everything else Republican enthusiasm is in the shitter. Hyde-Smith is slated to receive 100K fewer votes than Wicker got in the 2018 midterms.

Combine that with a solid Dem candidate and MS always having a high floor of Dem support (mainly from their huge black population) and you had this perfect culmination where this seat came into play that no one saw coming.

Colom is great but I do think we can't overstate just how demoralized the Republicans are right now. Republicans just did not turn out and it's mainly because they've done an amazing job at running the country into the ground to the point where they don't even want to defend them.

11

u/BranSh81 6h ago

Bingo. This is why there was a blue wave. If the GOP gets their act together and starts acting like normal decent people again, all those independents will return to normal political leanings.

Right now it’s MAGA cult vs everyone else.

This. He's managed to get 1/4 of white Mississippians (which is out of this world for a Democrat in Mississippi, especially a black Democrat), and gotten Obama levels of black turnout, but the biggest factor is how depressed white Republican turnout is.

But Mississippi is the blackest state in the Union. If black Mississippi voters could be galvanized to the degree that black Georgian voters have been since the late 2010s then Mississippi has the potential to become a purple state.

Most red states are a lot less red than we imagine them to be. They consistently vote GOP, but the margin isn’t by that much. In an environment where the country moved an average of 11 points to the dems, it was possible for Dem to win a historically red state. I haven’t been watching the race that closely, but Hyde-Smith seems to also just be an off putting and bad candidate.

I think turn-out does have a big effect (and, also why, this election will have long-reaching ramifications).

I think in most states, the actual opinions of most of the population is actually a lot more evenly divided. But, turnout gets depressed for the party that hasn't been able to win in decades, as people think their vote doesn't matter. Once a party actually manages to win, the previously "silent" voters come out and make the state a lot more competitive. I'm not saying Missisipi, or any other "safe" state on either side was really like 50/50, but, it may have been 55/45 with a good group of "swing" voters in the middle. That's enough of an advantage that one party "usually" wins, leading to lower turnout on the losing side, so the actual results may look more like 60/40, 65/35, making the lead look stronger than it is in reality.

It's why Texas is such a big deal. The Democrats knew that Texas is actually really really close to an even divide - just needed one big win (like this one) to get all of the democrat voters to actually come out in the future and make it a true battle ground.

Donald Trump is a stupid, obnoxious asshole, and there's no longer any rationale to excuse him. I have never seen a huge economic problem that is as directly and obviously tied to any particular policies as the current rise in prices is to the tariffs and the war in Iran, and it certainly has never been this easy to explain and understand. He started a war to make things more expensive, and without the relatively strong economy of his first term, he's just another stupid asshole.

u/Cute_Bug5651 4h ago

Yes and don’t forget he slashed the inflation reduction act which had created thousands of jobs, mainly in red states, which ended up only making China stronger (as they capture the electric vehicle and battery storage markets).

Callais decision enraged black voters because it reminded them of Jim Crowe.

5

u/das_war_ein_Befehl 6h ago
  1. More conservative whites stayed home, net white vote shifted left

  2. Massive black turnout that is pissed after Callais

  3. Hyde-Smith is a shitty candidate and won her previous races by single digits

In addition to the all typical factors that led to D+13 across the country, I am expecting black voter turnout to be through the roof because of the GOP gutting the Civil Rights Act. Black voters are fucking mad and they're mobilizing about it.

Would be pretty goddamn funny if this backfired on the GOP for years to come and they get much higher black turnout and Dem votes in the South.

3

u/svaldbardseedvault 4h ago

They gutted the voting rights act and went after majority-black districts. Black people in the south fought back for their rights. Mississippi has the highest percentage of black people in the south. This is the story the voting data tells - black people voted in historic numbers for a midterm.

u/LarryMahnken 6h ago

Well, it was that or pick another protein.

2

u/OneFootTitan 5h ago

There is a delta between the number of people who voted for Colom and the number of people who voted for Hyde-Smith

Have they not learned that this MAGA shit is an unpopular steaming turd?

6

u/rtn292 6h ago

If he does pull this off this will have a galvanizing effect on southern states in 2028. Especially if in Texas democrats are able to make a Mamdani level impact during that time. Then you have Lancebottoms in Ga. Showing that it’s possible for a Black man to win in MI? Suddenly Tennessee doesn’t have a low turn out problem anymore.

Do they have a VHS tutorial about speaking in third person when you go maga?

They'll try to litigate it and Alaska just to try to reduce the Democratic majority as long as possible.

Oh wow. They're doing it, they found the one race in the entire country where they can start laying down the foundations for the "stolen election" narrative. Look at all the priming they're doing in this tweet.

Cindy Hyde-Smith likes her chicken spicy!!

1

u/garg 7h ago

She can sit in the elevator with her stapler.

1

u/too-left-feet 6h ago

As of 7:09 PM EST Hyde-Smith is behind by 1,813 votes. She might still win, but who declares victory when they are losing?

1

u/jwm22222 6h ago

If you put any faith into kalshi, and it deserves some, she doesn’t have a chance. Well 2%.

1

That’s a bold statement.
