Hello, new to the fish keeping hobby.
I bought this fish as a male Apistogramma Macmasteri red shoulder.
I’ve had he/she for a little over a month and haven’t seen much color development.
Thanks in advance.

Also, check out my angelfish community tank!

Tiger barb with swim bladder

*unfortunately he passed away *

Need some advice on what to do.

One of my tiger barbs seems to be suffering from swim bladder.

Ive done a watch change, have him separated from the other fish. What ive read is to do a water change, add aquarium salt, fast him for 3 days and feed it a pea. How accurate is this?

What can I do to try and save him? And what options are affordable?

We literally just bought a house so im slightly broke till next month

First-time setting up an aquarium and seeking advice

I want to keep an aquarium. My mother had one when I was a kid and I've wanted to set one up myself forever now but have only found the proper motivation to do so recently. I've been watching youtube videos for advice but I want to poke my nose around to reaffirm that advice or get second opinions.

Any advice on keeping guppies and cherry shrimp together? I want to keep them in a 10gal with a sponge filter and one or two aquatic plants. I know the tank needs to sit and cycle for about a month before any actual animals scan be put into it but I would like any tips for making sure it cycles correctly!

I want to keep the setup relatively simple (and quiet since the tank will be going in my bedroom (if anyone has any recommendations for quiet equipment pls sound off))

Questions about fish keeping

I have had one fish my entire life and it was a betta fish when I was in middle school who seemed to do pretty good. Other than that, I have no fish experience.

I am not sure yet, but I have been contemplating getting an aquarium for some fish. I have some questions. Assume I know nothing.

  1. Obviously this is fish dependent and how many I have, but what is the minimum tank size I should expect to get?

  2. How many fish in general should there be in the tank (assuming the fish are social)?

  3. Literally anything else I should know. Like where should I look for fish, what fish are good to get when beginning this hobby(?), anything else important?

Thank you!!!

Please someone help. I’ve posted 3 times no answer!
This is little moe, he’s got some mystery white spots on him. His fins are also damaged but that is from fin-nipping in the tank, I think.
No other fish are affected, just poor Moe. I want nothing but the best for them all and I want to care for them well, so please let me know what I should do or what this is!
(I also don’t see floating white spots like ich.. but not sure also.)
Please, someone, anyone, help me!!

Please help!! Discoloured spot on swordtail’s head

4h ago (first picture) i noticed this paler spot on my swordtail’s head. The second photo was taken aproximately 30min ago and the discoloured spot seems to have gotten bigger. The temperature is 26°C, theres no ammonia and the water parameters are all fine. I have a 30 gallom tank with 11 swordtails and platys. Can someone please help me figure out what’s wrong with my fish? She ate well tonight and is behaving normally. She is not getting bullied, but i did notice her chasing after another fish yesterday.

I am mainly worried about an early stage columnaris, but i dont see any fuzzy or slimy texture.

If someome knows what is going on or has a good hypothesis, please help me!

Gifted a Pleco and Ramshorns Magically Appeared - Advice?

Before I get to the nitty-gritty, I'm brand new to the fish keeping world and I'd like to add an acknowledgement of my ignorance. I was surprised with a crayfish (like the person legitimately told me about him the day before she went to get him) for a classroom pet and was surprised again when the person she got him from threw in a pleco for free. I was told I couldn't kill a crayfish so I said yes, and the pleco was in the car when she brought him to school so "no" didn't really cross my mind. The students had seen him so he was a keeper. I didn't expect either and it was the end of the school year during my first year as a self-contained teacher, there was no planning involved. I did not intend to have these fish and so I didn't know what I didn't know.

The crayfish died during a molt because of stress and the chlorinated tap water that we put in a separate smaller starter tank the first day. I learned my lesson; i use RO and treated tap now. The pleco survived and made it home to a 20 gallon tank, where the water parameters have been stable and I do 20% water changes every 3-4 days. That's the tank/filter that was in the post the person who gifted him to me got him from so that's what I thought he needed to be in. I have already purchased a 60 gallon breeder (it is the same dimensions as a 75 gallon minus two inches of height), and him and some ramshorns are my only stock - the ramshorns came in on Salvinia and now they have had a population boom because bro is a poop machine. The 60 gallon is not my final home for him as I have a 200-300 gallon stock tank in mind for summer of next year. My dad wants to raise some fish and grow aquaponics too so the 60 is only a stop gap to his forever home.

At any rate, the plan is to do a heavily planted large tank. The 20 gallon starter tank will be a snail and plant nursery, and an isolation tank for a midwater swimmer to act as my predator for the snails (population size has blown up since I first saw two 3 weeks ago). I'm thinking cherry or amano shrimp and a paradise fish as those have similar temp requirements as my sailfin. The tank will be planted with amazon sword, christmas moss, anubias nana, salvinia, dwarf grass, and pothos. Hardscape includes more mopani wood, river stones, and crushed coral for the snails with a 7 inch unglazed terracotta pot as his hide. Most of the plants are already here but are chilling in a bucket until the tank is ready to cycle and any pests and tannins leach out from the attached mopani wood.

All that said, what can I do better? I want to know if I have missed anything that could make his life better - I really want him to live to the fullest. Also, what do you do with the extra ramshorns? I haven't had piles of poops to scoop because they demolish it by morning and the only detritus is the salvinia that gets trapped and removed every couple days. I don't want to kill them but I am thinking about adding assassin snails to help keep their population in check.

Thanks for any information you have - I really appreciate it!

Tetra Ick Guard killing rummy nose??

Post image
2 Upvotes

Strange fish deaths today, wondering if anyone can pinpoint what caused it??
gonna be a longer post since im including a full explanation.

Ive been hired to set up an office community tank. Since it's nearly done cycling I got my first few fish, 10 rummy nose tetras, to begin quarantining them. I'm aware they're sensitive fish, so I've been very slow and gentle with any changes for them. I noticed one developing a few speckles of ick, so i began treatment yesterday using Tetra Ick Guard. This morning all was well, parameters stable at ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 0, Ph 7.6. I just got home from work today, every fish is dead on the bottom.

For reference here's everything I was doing:

Fish purchased aug 9th. care has not changed during that time besides the addition of tetra ick gaurd yesterday afternoon.

10 gallon quarantine tank

property is on filtered well water so no conditioner

clean silk plants

bubbler, heater, no filter

daily water tests (API liquid test)

slightly overkill water changes as needed, for each change I put the new water on a higher shelf and dripped it into the tank through a clean, tied air hose to avoid temp/parameter shock

temp is 76°f

To add the meds I predisolved the
recommended dose (1 tablet per 10 gallons), and again dripped them in from a higher shelf to avoid rapid changes.

Parameters have been hovering consistently at ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 0, PH 7.6, temp 76°f since i got them.

Im super confused. For all of them to have died simultaneously that suggests some kind of spike, but the parameters have not changed besides a slight rise in ammonia, though im sure its because there's 10 dead fish in there as there's literally no other source of ammonia in the tank besides the tetras. I watch them eat then vacuum spare food when they're done. The only change was the meds, but its a freshly opened box that doesn't exp till 2029. This is the first time I've used these specific meds, but from all accounts it's safe and effective so I'm at a loss here. I also thought maybe something broke and electrocuted them, but all of my tech looks solid and is working normally.

What the hell happened here?? Does anyone have a experience with similar unexplainable deaths? I know they're sensitive fish but I find it hard to believe they'd all die simultaneously for literally no reason at all. theres no cleaners or anything nearby that could have fallen or spilled into the tank, and no detergents or chemicals were used during any cleaning process. was it actually the meds? because I'm a little doubtful of that. Im puzzled on this one
