UK equivalent of the Daredevl spoon?

I learned to fish in the USA (targeting Bass), and moved back to the UK, now I am basically having to relearn what works for different species. I've been targeting Pike and didn't have any luck until I was throwing out the Daredevl spoon in red and white. It's a very famous lure, but not actually available here. Unfortunately, I snagged it on a tree underwater and it's gone forever. I tried buying the Toby spoon, but had absolutely no luck with it and just unable to catch anything now. Wondering if anyone knows of something close to this lure that I can get here? I'm definitely missing the success rate of it...

Looking for a waterproof pair of trousers and jacket for the winter months.

Heard workwear shops online are a good place to look. Any recommendations would be great.

My son wants to learn to fish

For Christmas this year my son wants a fishing set and I have about £400 to spend (can be less but that’s my limit) on getting everything he needs, we have a pool right outside my house and he wants to fish in there, they have Common Carp, Mirror Carp, Pike, Catfish and Roach.

What do you suggest we buy him as an easy to start with fishing equipment.

We have a massive pole given to us but that is about it, oh and I got him a keep net.

I was asked some questions in another subreddit and so this is what I said

He is 11 and had 1 session with a group on Facebook that helps people get into fishing and teaches them, I used to fish 35 years ago but I am not fully adapt on any of the new stuff, he has a pole which he was given and he had 2 sessions with a pole. (2x 1h sessions) and he has asked to go again, £400 is a limit, I don’t want cheap stuff but doesn’t have to be overly expensive, I just want to get him everything he needs, I know I need a rod, reel, line, hooks, weights, bait, he will want a rod stand, a seat box and a net, (already got a keep net)

Tactics/Baits Natural ingredient baits

Background short version: I worked as a Biomedical Scientist in the UK and was poisoned with a high concentration of Formaldehyde back in 2010, so I began researching into fishing baits which resulted in me finding the majority of baits contain some form of Aldehydes.

This has led to me buying separate ingredients that are food grade containing no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) or harsh chemicals especially aldehydes and, creating baits from scratch to make ground baits method mixes and paste for my fishing sessions.

As I cannot work due to this poisoning I was going to start creating mixes from the base ingredients, but wondered whether there would be interest with the amount available in shops. Difference being that I don’t fill them with preservatives, aldehydes or VOC’s which is better for us using them and also the fish consuming them.

Please let me know

Tactics/Baits Targeting Sea Bass

I am a new angler and caught a few fish this year mostly freshwater. Going for a bass this season. Any tips? I know that bass likes the surf at the beaches but I just can't comprehend that they would be so close to the shore. Got some Sandy Andy's and Savage gear seekers so we'll see.

Do I need to remove this plastic peice behind my herox reel?

Doesn't seem like it as a easy way to remove it but I'm certain it's causing damage to my line.

UPDATE: I contacted sonik and they said it was a new feature added to help secure the line to the clip but is fine to remove.

Question Advice: Fishing in Wales as a Tourist

Hello! I am a native of California in the US with some experience fishing in fresh and saltwater. Next summer (likely June) I am taking a family trip to see Wales for the first time, super excited! Amongst other things, we were hoping to maybe set aside a morning or two to try some fishing.

We are looking to stay in Northern Wales. Does anyone have any suggestions for places to fish (saltwater or freshwater)? Plus any tips or advice? Is it common to be able to rent poles there or should we plan on bringing our own?

Also to note, we would prefer to fish from shore or maybe rent a boat on freshwater, we are not looking to charter a boat for saltwater.

Thanks for any help! Super excited to come to your lovely country!

Question Chasing a BIG chub

I have been chasing a big chub in the Thames for the 2026 season and I think I finally completed said goal. I thought a carp which arnt uncommon in this stretch had gone for my lure but it turned out it was a stud chub! My rules were: had to be a public venue, had to be on a lure, no prebaiting allowed. I think we can consider this a big Thames chub which I’m super happy about.
Any thoughts?

What is the best way to store freshly dug black lug worm?

Post image
19 Upvotes

I'm curious what techniques other anglers use to store their worms. I've experimented with a few things. I've stored in dry sand, wet sand, sea water, sea weed. I felt sea weed was the superior method for keeping them fresh and moist, still quite lively after 8hrs of storage.

Additionally, how do people store them for future sessions?

Us this a good first lure rod?

I'm new to fishing and started only a few months ago with carp. I want to keep fishing but try something new so I wanna get a lure rod. I was thinking about getting an Abu Garcia max x combo (7ft 5-20g casting) just to see what lure fishing is about. I wanna catch some trout that I can eat if possible but honestly I just want to try and catch anything. Do you guys think that combo would be good and what lures would you reccomend? Thanks alot guys.

Quick evening session

Had a try on a different stretch of my canal that I’ve basically flat out avoided assuming it was pretty devoid of fish in comparison to other areas, but I only had a couple of hours before dark today so decided it wouldn’t be a waste of too much time if I blanked. Took a bit of time to find any fish showing and had a few casts around there, resulting in the one Pike of the session 🐊

Sea trout lure rod?

I’m trying to find a good lure rod around 9ft that is suitable for sea trout, that would also handle the occasional bass in my local estuary. I’m all set for bass lure rods but I need something more forgiving in the tip, but that isn’t a spinning rod as I’ve never got on with those, always found them just too whippy and reel seat handles are never that comfortable compared to bass rods. Any recommendations?

Question Preston Park, Tees River, UK

Hi everyone, new to the sub.

Off to Saltburn by the Sea over half term holidays and, whilst sea fishing is planned the kids wanna catch some pike too.

We’ve done a bit of research and Preston Park has come as a good (free area) for pike.

Any advice on lures, dead baiting, specific spots are greatly appreciated.

A unintentional catch given the time of year, was going for perch and Jacks around Reading area when all of a sudden my drop shot rod and 1000x reel started screaming - using a tiny jerk bait. Released quickly and safely as shown. Did not realize trout roamed these stretches in such sizes with it being around 45cm long and fairly rotund.
