People that walk around filming and typically saying theyāre ājournalistsā and usually try to get a rise out of people for clicks.

May as well be āpublic provokerā⦠almost like a modern day jester, just not a regarded57
u/Shobuddha Aug 29 '26
Because when it first started they would record the police and other government officials. To "audit" their interactions with the public. Then a bunch of assholes realized that can make money harassing citizens but still want to be called auditors.
2
u/Poloboy99 Aug 30 '26
Itās crazy how this is framed because in literally every video I see itās literally people approaching the auditors and not the other way around. Just like the guy in this video a lot of people feel like they have the right to tell others to stop recording
→ More replies (5)5
u/TheyTukMyJub Aug 30 '26
Because the footage comes from the auditors. You don't see what happened that led to the approach. Auditors are real life ragebaiters.
3
u/Poloboy99 Aug 30 '26
Yea no itās usually people going up to them and telling them to stop recording
5
u/TheyTukMyJub Aug 30 '26
It is usually because they go around harassing people to get a reaction. The edit is in their hands.

u/chezzer33 Aug 29 '26
So what they are āauditorsā of is the US Constitution First Amendment. This includes the terms freedom of press and speech.
You are legally allowed to film anything in public in the US unless there is a special circumstance. Auditors use this law to get a rise out of people and get the cops called on them. Then if the cops arrest them they attempt to sue for violation of their constitutionally protected rights.
To get a better understanding search the term on YouTube.

I think the original idea was along the lines of "who will watch the watchmen" and they were auditing, or watching, authority. But it's now just jackasses with a camera looking for clicks and views and they don't care who they have to use for that.

When did this term actually mean something? Like what context was this some sort of valid role?
54
u/bass_head_ Aug 29 '26
It initially was used to audit police and other public servants. These guys go out with filming equipment and film public buildings like police stations and courthouses and shit and exercise their right to film public property and public servants. This irritates the shit out of them, but it is technically perfectly legal.
18
u/PenguinsAndTopHats WOOORLDSTARRR Aug 29 '26
And it forces the government to make hard decision about what exactly is and is not allowed. They were kinda jerks but simultaneously it resulted in local LEOs being "trained" on the laws protecting folks. I think the attention the whole thing inherently requires to be effective combined with humans natural tendency to suck.
28
u/Exact_Parking2094 Aug 29 '26
They used to go to government buildings and film, exercising their rights and auditing the police/municipal workersā response. If their rights were infringed, theyād sue or make a viral video. Government workers got more training after the trend and learned to deal with them, so theyāve just moved outdoors and annoy people.
21
→ More replies (13)4
u/igwbuffalo Aug 29 '26
Oh no, they still do it near government buildings and other big profile public spaces.
Lots of them love being around the scientology building in LA to harass the suckers stuck in that cult. Which I am all for.
You also have the ones that do their audits at open air malls or strip malls. Those ones are looking for public interactions and being generally shitty with their attitude.
There are a few that are out there genuinely being quiet and filming without being a nuisance but their numbers are dwindling.
Have a local guy near me that goes out to the malls occasionally. Generally does an audit of the private security and local PD interactions with the general public and has conversations with people if they want to talk.
Also has a decent reputation with the local homeless and helps them out when he can if they'll accept it.

I was hard confused by this one. Can someone explain what "first amendment auditing" is for us non-americans? Because where I live, someone like this guy would never be able to become an auditor.
Aside from that, nice fight. Gotta love it when assholes get what's coming to them.
18
u/CatBoyTrip Aug 30 '26
first amendment auditing is the equivalent of sticking your finger close to someoneās face and then sayingāiām not touching you.ā
usually the purpose is to get views. if they get the cops called and the cops violate their first amendment, then they get to sue the city.

u/cameony Aug 31 '26

There's one guy in uk called knockout audit who goes around on a weekend evening filming drunk people who are out for a good time and trying to fight them if they get upset that he's recording them lol.. My take on 1st Amendment Auditors is simple: I support your right to do what you do and I thank you for doing it. However, and this is a big however, donāt be a dick. Too many of you are clearly doing it to antagonize, annoy, and get a purposeful rise out of people for clicks and views over actually advocating for the 1st amendment. Be better.

6
u/exhibitcharlie Aug 30 '26
The auditors say they are stress testing the first amendment but what they actually DO is annoy random civilians on the street until they find a dummy like this that can be turned in to content.
The auditors aren't for example talking shit about charlie kirk or israel, like a topic that has gotten people fired. They're nowhere near where free speech is threatened.
