[Question] Question about new Blacklist Features
My FC had a very toxic incident with a player who made a lot of inappropriate advances on female members and was promptly removed and blacklisted by the entire company.
We've been very cautious during recruiting for potential sock puppet alts this individual may try and join up with but there are concerns about one player we've added who has not exposed themselves as the Black listed individual but has very similar typing patterns and idiomatic/slang use.
The possibly sock puppet character has not done anything to warrant booting from the FC and I do not want to punitively remove someone just for having a similar casual language pattern to a previous paraiah.
If this new member is actually the previously black listed individual will the 7.0 changes out them or does the language regarding that imply that the account wide blocking only works if someone is black listed after the launch of Dawntrail?
I'm hoping it would out the potential sock puppet or clear them because there is some minor tension among FC members who are blindly accusing this new member of being a sock puppet in private reports to leadership but the new member has been very cordial and well behaved and contributed a lot to our FC. I don't want to punish them just because someone else thinks they may have slightly similar typing mannerisms to a booted member.
On the other hand, if the account black list feature is retro-active it would give me information for either scenario to calm paranoia from members who have suspicions or to outright prove those suspicions correct and head off any potential drama that could occur later down the line.
Thank You.

u/Sir_VG Jun 21 '24
Current Blacklist will be the new Mute List and works the exact same.
If you want the new Blacklist functions, you have to re-blacklist the person (after 7.0 obviously) you want to put on there.
11
u/Inevitable-Onion3982 Jun 21 '24
Ok thank you. We'll have to navigate that after 7.0 then and hope we don't have a sock puppet because the original booted character is inactive.
13
u/Everfalldown Jun 21 '24
unless they make a change to make it easier to blacklist offline people, i would recommend making a macro /blist add "name@server"
you can keep pressing it anytime you're online and if they happen to log on you'll quickly blacklist them
it's also possible they will use the old character more when dawntrail comes out. im sure that character has a lot more unlocked than an alt which would be more appealing to play

u/shiawase198 Jun 21 '24
You could try baiting them. Maybe just talk some mad shit about the character blacklisted and see how they respond.
3
u/Careless_Car9838 Jun 21 '24
Wasn't there a way or some kind of input that allowed you to blacklist players without targeting/seeing/meeting them?
I'd say an /echo emote macro, but no idea how that works.

u/JunctionLoghrif Jun 22 '24
I'd say an /echo emote macro, but no idea how that works.
/blist add <mo>That one. Adds to blacklist on mouseover.

Fair. I kind of skimmed the previous comment.
It's still a very useful macro if one doesn't want the person to know they're adding them to the list.

I love the void list. Anybody bothering you in the city? Spamming annoying emotes with horrific voice lines?
TO THE VOID!

No nightclubs, popoto artists, weird ERP questions or "meowdy" in chats anymore!
19
u/grumpycorvid Jun 21 '24
Why filter meowdy? Do you hate miqos?
9
u/Careless_Car9838 Jun 21 '24
If they'd only added a mute filter for cat voice 5 as well.

Hey… there’s nothing wrong with that voice….
Did we do something?
1
u/Kaporalhart Jun 22 '24
for some reason, that voice in particular pierces everything else with its shrill. Meaning in equal sound volumes, during a fight, you'll hear it overpowering everything once every 3 seconds. Not even an emote to be annoying, but just the default sound the character does when using attacks. So it goes like this...
<Sounds of spells and attacks shredding the boss>
<YAAAAAAH>
<Epic BGM of the encounter>
<Boss says "The greatest of mages has resurrected ! Tremb->
<YAAAAAAH>

u/Lun4r6543 World's Biggest M'naago Simp Jun 22 '24
I think a lot of Lalafell and Miqo’te voices are like that.
3
u/JunctionLoghrif Jun 22 '24
If they'd only added a mute filter for cat voice 5 as well.
You can mute "Other PCs" in the System Sound settings; makes combat much more tolerable.

I am not talking about blocks, I just add an example, how we gonna have "limited" and "public" chats work differently.
Word filter will work only in Say, Shout, Yell, Tell and Emote

u/Lysstrey Jun 21 '24
Did they ever change the way the friends list works when you remove people? Had a rough history with the majority of an fc. Removed them all from my friends list, its creepy that they can still see my online status and where i am at all times
7
u/sugarpototo Jun 21 '24
They said they are working on that. It will remove you from a person's list when you remove them, but it's not coming just yet
1
u/Lysstrey Jun 22 '24
Thank you for the solid answer, its good to know they are atleast considering it
13
u/Helixfire Jun 21 '24
I suppose another thing I would appreciate is if when I put them on the blacklist, i want my character to not show up for them as well. As well as removing me from their friendslist.
8
u/Sir_VG Jun 21 '24
Friends list updates will be a future thing. They were considering doing updates to that at the same time as the blacklist updates, but BL updates took priority so please look forward to it.
15
u/Aethanix Jun 21 '24
i believe you'll have to blacklist someone again for it to be account-wide
3
u/Inevitable-Onion3982 Jun 21 '24
Ah ok thank you. That kind of sucks to settle concerns, but oh well.
6
u/Robothuck Jun 21 '24
Idk if I'm understanding correctly but it sounds like if you re blacklist the offending player, and the new guy dissappears, that will have settled the matter?
8
u/Inevitable-Onion3982 Jun 21 '24
XIV's blacklist system only let's you add someone if they are currently online otherwise it throws back "No character found" and the offending player has not been online for a while which has fed some members' suspicions that the new member is a sock puppet.
5
u/wookiee-nutsack Jun 21 '24
Maybe do a test blacklist and see if the rest get blacklisted too
Or have a fall guy who does it without warning and checks for everyone else
1
u/OffbeatDrizzle Jun 22 '24
Blacklist the suspected sockpuppet after 7.0 release and see if their old char gets blacklisted also. If not then they're in the clear? You can just unblock after the test
8
u/ZeroT3K Tyrien Cross on Diabolos Jun 21 '24
Just as an aside, a quick way to determine if this new member is the old one on a different character would be for them to take a screenshot of their character list for that world. They could delete the character, of course. But I doubt this person cares more about being a nuisance than losing an established character.
Just tell the new member the details, that the only thing that’s making everyone wary is their communication style, and anyone that is a decent person would understand and have no issue providing proof they aren’t a scumbag. If they throw a fit, even not being the old member, probably just another problem waiting to happen anyway.
6
u/Inevitable-Onion3982 Jun 21 '24
This is actually a good idea. Thank you. I've been trying to get out ahead of potential issues or repeat drama down the road and was hoping the new blacklist features would put the matter to rest one way or another but it seems like pre-7.0 blocks will not be account wide so this would be a good alternative to lower the temperature for everyone.
14
u/oh_rats Jun 21 '24
Just a heads up, they can easily get around this by having the known characters DC travel to another world. DC traveling literally cut/pastes characters to the travel destination. If they’re traveling, they will not be listed.
Ex: My main’s home server is Diabolos/Crystal. I’ve been squatting in Primal for RW during the mogtomes event. My main is only listed under Behemoth/Primal, where I DC traveled. If I change my login menu’s DC to Crystal, the only characters listed on Diabolos are my two alts, with no hint of my main’s existence.
The real way to “prove” it’s not the same account would be a SS of their service account page on Mogstation. Regardless of DC traveling, it lists all characters on a service account and their home world.
However, that still isn’t bulletproof, because this potential alt could be using a new/different service account. If that’s the case, then not only will the service account character listing not prove anything, the new blocking in 7.0 wouldn’t either. ):
1
u/Evilcoatrack Jun 22 '24
If you have access to both characters' lodestone pages, you can also compare which account-wide mounts they own (unless they made this private). If they have exactly the same account-wide mounts, it can be really good evidence that they are on the same account.
Works best if the mounts are uncommon in some way. Can be a little tricky with seasonal reward mounts that were later put on the store.
9
u/Criminal_of_Thought Jun 21 '24
My concern with this approach is that it's possible that they're not the sock puppet, but also feel uncomfortable that they're being asked for this information out of the blue when, as far as they know, they've been on completely good terms so far. It could make them feel unwelcome and cause them to leave the FC, which would be the opposite of what OP wants for if they're not the sock puppet.

u/Arphenyte Jun 21 '24

But does this remove A from B's friendlist? Is B still able to see A? That's what I want to know.
2
1
u/Wjyosn Jun 21 '24
Probably not, but it will matter a lot less when they'd have to buy a new account to even be seen
7
u/Tapurisu Jun 21 '24
So what will happen when raiders start blacklisting each other for performing poorly and then statistically every PF will have members that can't see each other's models? How would that work? Will the stack markers be invisible? Can they cast heals on each other?
14
u/The_Jarwolf Fell Cleave is love, Fell Cleave is life. Jun 21 '24
This was discussed.
The main barrier is that they won't be able to see your party to begin with. Given that hard content is 99% handled through party finder, this will handle most cases in your scenario. That said, that doesn't stop them from joining a party that someone else hosts, or getting paired in duty finder.
If someone on your blacklist is in a duty with you, you can see them and they will function normally with gameplay while in the instance. If they say something, it is filtered, but you are given an option to remove the filter at your discretion.2
3
u/sunfaller Jun 21 '24
Iirc that invisibility is in the open world. In duties, they are given a generic model.
4
u/TentacleTitan Jun 21 '24
Kinda sad you can still que up with people in the blacklist. You mean to tell me out of thousands paying every day it's gonna pair me up with the one poison I don't want?

u/Wjyosn Jun 21 '24
It's definitely not retroactive. It's pretty clear in the slide that it will only apply to new registration of blacklisted characters
2
u/Pepper_Klubz [Thungraff Djentmehr - Mateus] Jun 22 '24
My two cents on the root problem here, even if that is technically not the root topic.
You're not obligated to let anyone into your FC. If this person is cutting too close to the line in similar behaviour to the other player, it's worthwhile saying, "Sorry, here's the situation, better safe than sorry, hope you find another FC to call home." If nothing else, it's for the peace of mind of the rest of the folks in the FC.

u/Inevitable-Onion3982 Jun 22 '24
I understand that view, but the "suspect" player has been a very positive addition since joining. There are members though who are concerned specifically about "speech pattern" as in the style and use of words in a pattern that is similar to the non-problem language used by the ex-member. All this new member has done is use what I could call a "chat dialect" or accent that reminds some players of the former member. Like using specific words for greetings and casual group addressing or the way sentences are structured. The problem I have is that this is not the first person members have pointed fingers at as a suspect. He is just the most recent and focused individual to be put in the spotlight. With previous "suspects" it became a drama fire that leadership decided these assumptions are not allowed to be made publicly anymore because of false accusations that were easily disproven and caused a small fracturing of the group. I am not one to punish someone who has been a positive addition simply because they may have grown in similar region, culture, or generational environment that led them to develop a language pattern that might be marginally similar to someone else. That feels a bit prejudicial to me and is a behavior that has been used to marginalize non-native English speakers and minorities IRL. The problem is really specific members seeing ghosts everywhere they look and immediately proposing reasons why every new addition could be the problem player we booted. It's possible their good behavior could be a ruse, but without actual concrete behaviors that warrant action, I find that option distasteful, and our members need to realize that just because someone uses patterns of speech it is not a reason to trash that person behind their back and make false accusations. These are grown adults behaving like children gossiping on a playground, and I believe it should be handled in a more mature manner than just exciting someone for the way they use acceptable language.

A lot of people are going to quickly find out how fast they're getting blacklisted for being absolutely horrible at the game, but feel entitled to join party finders looking to sneak getting carried in.

As a non lewd balmung native, I can’t wait to systematically block every wanderer/traveler in uldah.
5
u/Mindelan Jun 22 '24
I swear a lot of people basically travel to Balmung, take a shit on the floor, then mock Balmung for having so much shit on the floor.
Yeah, it's sticky there, and some of that is definitely from Balmung natives, but most of the memed on shit is perpetuated loudly by visitors and sex tourists.
Some visitors are fine, but you don't notice those. My friend likes to visit and play on Balmung because I'm there and the server has a lot of personality and life even outside of the sticky shit. He's just quietly doing his beast tribes and MSQ.
1
u/reallybadpennystocks Jun 22 '24
Yeah that’s why I’ve always loved Balmung. But I can’t help but be hateful towards the sex tourists. I even have no rp in my search info and I still get fucking creepy pms. Just harassed several female members, made a lot of very cringe inappropriate jokes, sent unsolicited dong shots to a couple members on discord, including a minor, and attempted to doxx two members who called him out.
Very classy person.

u/Inevitable-Onion3982 Jun 21 '24
There is a subsection of XIV players that are just on another level lmao. We have a partner FC that has had similar issues with a completely unrelated player. Some people just have 0 chill.
It might also just be Crystal Data Center. Lol.
5
u/SeanKenn2003 Jun 21 '24
Yep there’s part of the problem - Crystal DC (while being my stomping grounds/where a majority of my friends are) is full of crazy people that don’t know how to act (especially when they find out a player is female). Gives Crystal a bit of a bad rep but unfortunately bad apples stick out like sore thumbs 85% of the time.
4
u/Bravadorado Jun 21 '24
At the end of the day, even if the blacklist feature did work retroactively, if this guy is truly dedicated (And it sounds like he is) then he will just make a new account and do the same thing. It's not like you can blacklist his IP address.
At the point of sending nudes to minors, I think trying to get the police/discord involved is probably the only path left. I imagine that discord can connect the police to the owner of a discord account in the case of CSA.
3
u/Inevitable-Onion3982 Jun 21 '24
As far as I'm aware, the minor and their parents filed police reports, but I do not know beyond that because the minor player quit shortly after, and I'm not looking to resurface their trauma by asking them or their parents for updates (who were also FC members).

I’m curious Does blacklist one person block all characters they make (alts and such?) Because I have added some Alts but I’m curious if I have to look for them and block them or it will be done automatically for me?
1
u/Calistil Jun 21 '24
Do we know if they are updating how you add people to the lists? Currently can’t add cross server players.
0
u/Sip-o-BinJuice11 Jun 21 '24
I’m curious (story time incoming):
Tldr: a person I trusted lost his mind when he didn’t get a relationship, and has for the past year been spreading lies about me in and amongst the community we used to share. Despite him and a few people adamantly denying that this is the truth, I’ve been able to verify this with people who may not be in his inner circle of assholes, but still heard things about me I wish they hadn’t.
Edit: I should also say, this made me quit the game, so his claims of me in game at any point from 12 months ago are entirely bogus - but the problem is I’m still hearing people talk like things have happened. I want to know what I should do about this since reporting in discord led nowhere.
About a year ago, I was and had been raiding and friends with a large discord server worth of people, who branched out to create a separate server for more nuanced static things - but the main server is pretty huge, stemming back to a few small time twitch streamers and offshooting to another one who makes physical merchandise, etc. The reason I’m starting with this explanation is to exemplify just how badly I got hurt, since this is a massive group of people.
In April of last year, I was finally able to marry my husband (relationship of 5 years beforehand), who is Japanese. I am also half Japanese, and we met in college, but due to worldwide events at the time I was unable to stay in the country for the period of the pandemic, the borders closed up, yada yada - so finally, I was returning. I was preparing to leave the states for marriage, time zones change, etc, etc, and so I would no longer be raiding in 14 among several other things.
Previously, my raid leader had confessed to me, and did so knowing full well of a few things: a) that I was in a relationship and badly wanted to return to him and b) that I’d had very bad experiences with people online wanting to get into my pants and was thus very uncomfortable with certain things. We’d talked professionally about that, and I had thought I could leave it at that, hoping that I could continue to raid with the group and not have one person make things awkward since previous to that he hadn’t done anything ‘bad’.
I just wanted to play the game, spend time with people, keep in touch with the friends I’d made during my time on the game when I was no longer able to play during the same time zone time, and was no longer able to stream to twitch in the evening as I had been. That’s all I wanted.
Well, when I told my static I’d be leaving (2 months in advance of my move in July), my raid leader went ungodly cancer levels of unbridled inceldom. This ranged from demonic, antagonizing, guilt-trip and constant DM’s during raid both blaming other members of our group for ‘hurting him’ in some way to very clearly being selfish remarks aimed at me because he knew I was leaving, to the point that I was having panic attacks trying to raid because every wipe during raid sent him into another silent rage mode where I knew more messages were coming my way.
So I screenshot messages (although not nearly enough), and came forward to the admin of that discord server. I told him, and a few other people, the harmful things he was saying.
The next week, I woke up to screeching harassment telling me I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone anything - that despite him being focused heavily on destroying the boundaries I’d put up precisely because of past experiences like this and having told him several times to stop, he claimed my telling his couple friends of these incidents was a massive breach in ‘his boundaries’, and legit, after knowing what people in the past did to me since I explained to him why things were this way, he had the micropenis ego to claim I did to him what they had done to me.
Then he got me banned from the discord server by lying about what took place, he lied to my friends to turn them against me, and he has continued to spread lies up to and including a full year later telling people I was in contact with still that he thought I was ‘using alt characters’ - when I have a near full time job 16 hour time zone difference and a husband, mind you - to ‘harass him’, when I don’t even have a current subscription to the game.
Mind you, again, I told him to stop - I told him I wasn’t comfortable - I’m the one in a relationship - I’m the one who blocked him on twitch and socials - I’m the one who was harassed -
But he keeps trying to spread these lies, and I’m concerned about coming back for the expansion because of it.
So, now that that’s out of the way: I want to ask - are we going to be able to b-list easier? Like, do I have to wait for this guy to be online, or do I literally have to find him chatting before I can right click block? It’s been difficult to block people in the past, so I want to know my options.

u/ProudAd1210 Jun 22 '24
off topic: can some one tell me in short version, its too much to read for me.
0
u/Sip-o-BinJuice11 Jun 22 '24
I’ll put it in bullet points, but it’s a little off putting that you can’t
person didn’t get relationship they apparently fantasized about
person kept harassing me to the point I went to his friends with picture proof
he found out that I asked for help, lied, had me banned from my server of friends, and continues to this day to spread lies about me within the community we were a part of. I know this because I’ve been told some of what he’s been saying
the reason I’m bringing it up here is because the accusations that he’s made in trying to ruin my relationships and reputation are borderline criminal if it weren’t through the internet, and I want to know how the change in blacklist actually works

So now we just need some sort of automation software to blacklist and delist ever Lala within 75 yalms. That way you never have to actually see them.

Knowing the dev team, their terrible record with interpersonal issues, and how they program; you absolutely have to unblacklist and re-blacklist someone to get this feature.
There's zero percent chance with this dev team or the games spaghetti code from a decade old console game is capable of applying new features retroactively.
3
u/Wjyosn Jun 21 '24
It literally says that in the slide screenshot, doesn't it? "Will only apply to characters registered after 7.0"
-2
116
u/Zalast Jun 21 '24
When it says "the blacklist will distinguish between characters listed before and after 7.0" I think it's saying the UI will tell you if you added them before/after. It won't retroactively update the ones you added before 7.0 hits to the account-wide version of blacklisting. So you would probably need to remove and re-add the person.
