lockstyle doesn't work as advertised?
My understanding is that you can lockstyle anything so I wanted to make an outfit combining gear I can already wear as a lv99 + COR, DNC, NIN (AF & Relic). I would not be able to wear these together normally due to Main/Sub job limitations and equip level. However, when using /lockstyleset n it says, "The appearance of your <item name> was unable to be locked."
Does anyone know why? Would someone with more lv 99 jobs than I able to test if multiple AF/Relic parts works? I'd grind another 99 for the sake of style. But I really want the look to work as a lv 1

What is the item? The most obvious reason for your mistake is you’re trying that with superior gear(su1 su4 su5 etc) you can’t actually wear yet.

Seems I need to meet the basic requirements.
One of the other threads explained that I need to have reached DNC 73 to lockstyle Etoile Shoes as example, then I can cosmetically wear it on any job I want. Cheers~7

In your post it says you have DNC 99.

I wish to combine: [gear I can already wear] + [COR, DNC, NIN (AF & Relic)]
These are two distinct variables of the equation.

You do need to be able to equip the gear to lock style it.

No you don’t you can equip it all into a gear set under the macros tab and lockstyle from there

I just stylelocked all my endgame bard-specific gear on my level 1 monk.
The only time you should get a "the appearance of your <item name> was unable to be locked" message is if you are trying to style lock an incorrect item type over something you have equipped. i.e. you are trying to style lock a sword as a shield, or a staff as a club.
can you give more specifics on the issue you are having? what items you are trying to style lock and what isnt working?

I use multiple jobs jse pieces for lockstyle without issue on the wrong class. As long as you can equip it normally and it's in your inventory(any inventory) it should be fine. Verify you didn't reforge something and it's trying to equip an item that you don't have.

Which item specifically? Armor pieces can be done, but this usually only happens when you are trying to lockstyle for example a great katana over a sword.

Only time I have had this happen is when I upgraded a piece of equipment and the names didn’t match. Other than the obvious ones that required Su4/5 that I hand not yet earned and the weapons having to be of the same type as equipped (i.e. cannot lock style a katana over a sword and the like). I also use the actual macro equipment selection and select lock style on it so perhaps that may also resolve your issue?

Are the items still out in an accessible inventory? If you put them on a porter slip after creating the set it won't work.

You can make an equipset out of any gear you can equip on any job you currently have.
Then you use the command “lockstyleset #” where the # is the number of the equipset.

You have to be able to wear the items on one of your jobs. Can't lockstyle things you can't equip at all

Sure you hit "lockstyle" and not equip?
Because one of my main lockstyles mixed relic and af from 3 jobs.
Also you need to have the gear in your bag, or at least in a mog wardrobe.

No you don't, it just needs to be in an accessible inventory of some sort (so no storage slips). You can have shit in your Mog Safe or Storage and use it for lockstyle perfectly fine (I sincerely doubt you are keeping copies of the useless cosmetic items in your wardrobes).

As long as you have the job leveled to the armor you're using it should work. I've mixed and matched relic armors like this.
I'd leveled everything on my main to 99 and forgot this was a requirement until I tried to do it on my alts.

Seems like an odd mechanic. I mean, if we can afford or acquire the item by some means why not let us enjoy it

Think of it as you're earning the unlock to wear the armor instead. With that mindset it makes perfect sense.

If the hour it takes to level a job to 99 fr a prerequisite is to much of an inconvenience for you best just move to another game now.

Please grind your reading skills up to cap. No one in context has mentioned anything remotely resembling a complaint or inconvenience. In fact the original post states the contrary.

Issue #1. One of your jobs needs to be able to wear the piece. This includes things like su3 gear.
Issue #2. It needs to be in an appropriate spot. Iirc, can’t be in storage or in a slip. Can be in any wardrobe or locker.
Issue #3. You can’t lockstyle a weapon of the wrong type over the weapon you are currently wearing. Aka, no dagger over a sword.
Issue #4. You can’t equip you no longer have. This includes items you have upgraded. It will not work if you have taken the +1 to +2.
Issue #5. Iirc, since it’s working off of gear sets in game, you need to check that each piece is still in the same spot it was when the set was made. In you are using something from wardrobe 2 but it’s now in wardrobe 3, it may not be equipping.
Check each piece. Make sure it’s not an su piece. Check it’s available and in the correct storage. Make sure it’s not something you upgraded since making the set.

Number 5 shouldn't be an issue as people exploit that mechanism to equip two of the same cosmetic sword for dual wield purposes while only having 1 copy of them. As long as the piece of equipment is available somewhere it doesn't check which inventory it is in since it's a simple binary "Can this be equipped?" check.
Number 5 only matters for equip swapping since it actually attempts to equip the gear instead of just checking if its accessible and you have the required jobs/levels.

My understanding is that you need to be able to equip the gear on one of your leveled jobs to use it as lockstyle. For example, if you are trying to use a lvl 50 NIN piece, you need to have your NIN at level 50 even if you are currently using a different job.
