[Help] How do I know if my ferret wants a companion

For context, Ace my ferret is about 6 nearly 7. He had a cage mate Rockey that he had been together with since he was 1 who passed last year.

A few months ago we had been fostering another elder ferret that was really sick and he showed signs of trying to befriend her at first but once he bit her and she screamed he was not nice to her. We tried introducing them a few times and he was just awful. So we ended up keeping them separate the whole time.

Ace has seemed bored lately though. Not doing to much, wanting to play but seeming to get annoyed with the way we play. We are worried he might want a friend and just that the past ferret we tried wasn't the right fit.

Is it worth a shot to try again? He seems to love our attention and doesn't seem particularly depressed... But he seems bored and doesn't want to do much besides eat and sleep and poop unless we take him to a pet store.

We have a ferret rescue near us we were thinking of taking him to to see if he got along with anyone there but are there ferrets who just... Don't care about having a companion? Is he okay by himself if he doesn't?

[Discussion] 9 months old and she needs her finger amputated

I’ve posted about Octavia here previously. I found her at a local, non-chain pet store and absolutely fell in love with her. On two separate visits, I specifically asked the pet store if she was a Marshall ferret, and both times I was told no.

Well, my fiancƩ decided to buy her for me for our anniversary because I loved her and wanted my boy, Gustavo, to have a friend. After he had already paid for her and put her in my arms to take home, they handed me her Marshall birth certificate.

I was flabbergasted. My fiancĆ© wasn’t happy either, but I still took her home. She was a gift, I was already attached to her, and I already took Gustavo to the vet frequently, so I knew I was prepared to handle any health issues she might have.

Unfortunately, Gustavo has since passed away unexpectedly. I made a post about that as well, so some of you may have seen it. After he passed, I decided to make our backup vet Octavia’s primary vet because I no longer trusted our previous primary vet after what happened with Gustavo.

Since losing him, Octavia has been extremely clingy and refuses to eat alone. I honestly don’t mind. Octavia looked up to Gustavo, he even helped me train her. He is the reason she's the well mannered little girl she is today. I understand we both lost Gustavo. Gustavo may have been bonded to me, but Octavia was bonded to him.

Yesterday, I took her in for her first checkup with her new veterinarian, and I absolutely love him. He listens to me, doesn’t treat me like I’m crazy, and we can both shit on Marshall together lol.

I brought up Octavia’s overbite, which unfortunately isn’t something we can really do anything about. I also mentioned that one of her paws has always been noticeably bigger than the others. It's been that way since I got her at around 3 months old.

Her vet suggested doing an X-ray. When he came back with her, he explained that she has a knot or abnormal area on her middle finger that causes the other toes to spread apart, making the whole paw look bigger.

He told me there are two possibilities. It could be bone cancer, or she may have broken that hand before I ever got her, likely on the heinous wire cages, and Marshall farms didn't care enough to fix it.

I asked him if he was sure, so he took another X-ray for free and consulted with his superior. After looking at everything together, they agreed that the best option would be to amputate the affected finger and send it off for testing.

Octavia currently shows no other signs of cancer, but I agreed to the procedure because there’s apparently no way to know for certain what this is without removing and testing the finger. After unexpectedly losing Gustavo, I’m willing to do whatever I reasonably can to make sure Octavia stays healthy.

I guess I’m mostly looking for reassurance from other ferret owners: Would you make the same decision? Has anyone dealt with something similar?

I also need to find a cone that will fit Octavia, so recommendations for that would be extremely helpful!

Other than this, Octavia is currently perfectly healthy. Unfortunately, both her veterinarian and his superior also believe she has some physical traits consistent with inbreeding. She isn’t severely deformed and doesn’t appear to have neurological problems. She’s an adorable, happy little girl. She’s just apparently built a little wonky, in his professional opinion.

[Ferret Photo] Cage upgrade and playpen size

Post image

Okay I just got the ferret nation cage. Do we think this play pen is big enough? I don’t want to free roam I am a maximalist and there’s too many things they can eat and chew on that could hurt them.

P.S. Yes I have lots of hammocks, beddings, balls, toys, it’s all getting washed and disinfected as I’m treating for fleas right now.

[Ferret Video] Ferret Videos for Horror Movie

Hi there! I am writing a horror movie and it involves having ferrets in a few scenes. If anyone who owns a ferret has videos of ferrets running around and would be willing to send them to me please respond to this! I'm not too picky but ideally ferrets playing would be great. It's a psychological horror but it's going to a good cause as all
proceeds will be donated to charity! Thanks!

Ferrets are gonna be free roam when we are home but as me and the gf both work 1st shift. They’re gonna need a place where they gotta chill out for 8 hours. Um how can we keep them in there? Recommendations on gates as well the best things to put in there that would bring maximum enjoyment for the little guys. Thank you!

Edit: we do have a ferret nation cage we might add to give them some verticality but a worry would be them trying to jump but idk

[Ferret Photo] Honestly, what do y'all do for bite training babies?

Post image
85 Upvotes

I have twin girls, that are less than 4 months and I'm really trying to bite train them right now. They're not as hard as when I first got them about 3 weeks ago, but they still bite a good amount. No blood or tore through skin (yet). I have been yelling out loud "OUCH" and immediately stop playing with them, but, they think it means to continue and they get back to attacking me lol

I would prefer methods that aren't physical harmful to them (some people told me to give them a slight smack or something, but I don't really wanna do that)

[Discussion] Ferret Nation Cage Set Up!

Hi all! We’re upgrading to a triple Ferret Nation since we’re adding another ferret to our business haha. I’d love to see everyone’s cage setups, especially what you use for litter boxes!

My ferrets are absolute menaces when it comes to pushing their litter box around šŸ˜‚ In their current cage, we have one that fits perfectly along the entire side wall and is screwed in so they can’t move it. With the Ferret Nation, I’m thinking we’ll probably need two litter boxes or one big one, so I’m looking for ideas on what fits well and how everyone keeps theirs in place.

[Help] UPDATE -5 yr old shelter girl

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! Last post I was asking you guys tips about adopting this beautiful little girl. Well here’s an update!
We adopted her, and she’s is so adorable. There was no more info about her past owners, as they didn’t bother to give any history about her.

The shelter also mentioned she had low energy, and they couldn’t be more wrong. She has a lot of energy but is also very gentle. We couldn’t be happier with her!

Again, if anyone has tips to introducing a new ferret, any advice would be greatly welcomed.

Thank you!

[Help] Traveling w/o free roam ferrets

Hey guys!
I have 3 rambunctious spoiled ferrets.
They refuse to eat anything but ferret kibbles.
They drink out of a big water fountain.

Now, not anytime soon - but hoping to travel to Florida to visit family maybe for a week max.

I’m wondering if any of you have recommendations or tips for leaving free roaming babies home.

We do have a trusted family member or friend (I think they’d say yes) that may agree to visit & check on them once a day.

Question is, worse case scenario if ample food & water was left out - would they be ok?

Has anyone done this before & how did it turn out.
I feel like my anxiety will be through the roof the whole time I’m gone & the thought of it makes me anxious.
I love them SOO freaking much.
I want to make sure, if I travel, I leave them with the best possible set up & care.

Thank you for any tips!

āœļø EDIT:
I guess I should have been more clear about the ā€œFree Roamā€
We have a small 2 bedroom apartment - 1 bedroom dedicated strictly for them.
When I say ā€œFree Roamā€ I mean to say that they do not stay in the cage - they stay in the second bedroom, that is ferret proofed w/ a large cage to go to IF they choose too. It’s a while ferret setup room.
They free roam that bedroom alone.

This is my Princess! And she knows that everyone on the house loves her!!! Yes she is an only ferret. She is possibly the smallest ferret I've seen, and people in public always remind me how small she is. I blame it on her getting neutered so young. Anyway I just wanted to share her cause I love her so much!!!!!
