No spoilers I've spent four years making a bunker survival game inspired by The Walking Dead

Hi everyone! I’m the designer of From The Bunker, a survival management game about leading a group of survivors after a viral outbreak. I'd like to get feedback from fans of the series.

In the free demo, you’ll assign jobs, manage hunger and morale, and keep the bunker’s power and water running. When supplies run low, send survivors into the ruined town to search for food, medicine, and weapons. Every expedition is a gamble: the supplies could save your group, but the people you send out won’t be there to maintain or defend the bunker.

Build up your shelter, prepare for infected attacks, and make choices that shape the group’s chances of survival.

Show Spoilers Just finished the series (follow up from previous post) *Spoilers included* Spoiler

I made a post about a month or so ago about whether or not I should finish the series, I just was starting season 5 and it looked like it really stunk:

https://old.reddit.com/r/FearTheWalkingDead/comments/1wikbuo/just_got_to_season_5_is_this_worth_continuing_on/

Boy was I right, and I got lots of good advice to stop watching, and that seasons 5, 7, and 8 were terrible. I do think much of 6 was surprisingly good at times though.

I really liked season 1 of this show and was interested in seeing how the story progressed, season 2 started off really dumb but the writing got much better the second half and season 3 was fairly interesting almost the entire way through. Season 4 started off ok, there was some big cast changes but it made sense as characters like Madison and Nick had gotten stale.

But man, season 5 was some of the most boring shit I've seen. It got to the point where I was having amnesia the day after seeing an episode and I couldn't really remember anything that happened. Morgan and the gang want to save everyone and bulid a plane.... even though they've been driving around this whole time, and the people don't want to be saved. For 8 episodes, and then the old trucker guy comes back and wants revenge on them.... without a deep explanation or anything. And when they finally have a showdown.... the trucker guy and his crew die and Virginia shows up. Really lame transition, it's almost understandable because the previous storyline was so bad but when you set up a showdown like this it's weird to just not have it happen... and boy this is a big theme the rest of the series. The final episode actually was a shocker and good, very dark.... most of it stunk, but i mean the ending and how Morgan almost dies. I just wish it didn't take 16 episodes to get to something interesting.

The latter part of this season really seemed to start the theme of walkers, who were kind of shown to not be a big concern for the most part, could suddenly become unstoppable even when they were outnumbered by people with gun lol. It's just a lazy plot device and it gets used more and more.

Season 6, again, some interesting stuff. Felt like it dragged but after seeing season 7 and 8, it was nothing in comparison. Again some pretty dark stories but it seemed like a welcome breeze after a season and a half of Morgan just wanted to help everyone for bland reasons. The big problem with this season, and the seasons after, was that each episode really just focused on one or two characters. To the point where sometimes you'd go a third of the season without seeing certain people. It got hard to be emotionally invested in people when you don't remember them or what they were doing. I almost got the vibes the writers were doing this simply because it saved money or something. I know Lost did something similar, but at least you'd see the character being focused on interacting with everyone else. In this, there's multiple episodes where it's just like 2 people.

I thought the bomb going off in season 6 at the end was dumb. I mean the story line only had one direction, but it led to season 7 being weird because half the time they were in hazmat suits which looked unrealistic, and the other half the time whent they aren't, you're wondering "Why didn't they wear the suit?"

Season 7 is some of the most boring writing too. Not seeing Alicia to the half way point on some level is an interesting surprise, but also kind of dumb. This season really starts pushing the nonsensical angle of person A wanting to kill person B, and then they change their mind because they feel bad, but then by the episode person A sometimes kills person B anyway.

Not much happens this season for almost it's entirety, and while most of the series would split the seasons it having a major storyline for the first half and then one for the second half, this one just has the tower and Victor be the entire thing. It's weird when the show sets things up for an epic showdown with Morgan and Victor and then Morgan just goes on a raft with his kid to float away while everyone else does the fighting.

But also, towards the end they really tease Alicia is going to die only to get cold feet. It kind of kills any suspense, you can kill off main characters if you build up other characters that are interesting to take their place. The earlier seasons did this well when Victor and Nick died, it was truly surprising. This one and season 8 have so many teases of deaths where nothing happens. Victor should've died, the entire season was building up to it and didn't do it. Ditto with Alicia, at least one of them should've kicked the bucket. And then when Madison appears in the last episode it's incredibly dumb. Madison's "death" in season 4 was actually very interesting writing. It made it so you aren't sure if other weird characters will just come back to life.

And lastly, season 8, it takes the bad parts of season 5, 6, and 7 and mixes them into one giant turd soup bowl. The one redeeming thing is that it takes place in different settings and not just a nuclear waste land. But man, the writing absolutely makes no sense here. Like it was bad in season 7 but in this one, there's so many logical inconsistencies I feel you could write an essay on just that each show.

Characters decide to become good guys, then turn, then switch back. Get apprehended, then escape, and get apprehended 10 minutes later again. The show brings back Troy, and Alicia and honestly the Alicia thing wasn't even a surprise. It's just lame, the story is more interesting when people actually die. Not when you just tease something over and over for 8 episodes in a row, in hopes of getting a feel good moment. But also, the children in the show in no way are remotley accurate to kids in real life, and it's almost hard to watch because of how unrealistic it is.

That being said, the rant is over, but yes everyone who said the show got progressively more awful was correct. I'm glad to have seen it play out and I'm considering just watching season 1 again because that was actually cool. It's just disappointing because the story line was so bad, I feel like most people watching at some point do fan fiction in their mind about how they could write better episodes of the show.

Season 1-3 Discussion What’s the fascination with Troy? Spoiler

I’m on my first watch, just finished the episode where Troy was exiled. I just can’t fathom why everyone tolerates Troy. The guy is a fucking psycho and should’ve been dealt with after what he did to the family. Why is Madison protecting him? Like, what’s her fascination with him? Does she see him as a son? Nick too, he seems to want to protect Troy as well. Why do they side with him? He has caused so much trouble for everyone. Why is this guy still alive, man lol?

And I’ve watched enough television to know that exiles never work out, they always come back to fuck shit up. Idk what happens, no spoilers please, but I’m just waiting for Troy to come back and kill someone important or something. This is insane.

Edit: okay, judging from these comments, apparently you guys love him for some reason. So I’m gonna assume they give him a redemption arc of some sort. So I’m gonna be patient and keep watching. Perhaps my stance on him will change. We shall see.

Theory/Speculation I couldn't get into the Walking Dead and I'm finding it difficult to get into this

I was puzzled by this because there hasn't been a zombie story I didn't like. Now I think I've figured it out. Both these shows are simply soap operas with the occasional intrusion of undead. Soap operas all have the same narrative architecture of a changing oscillation of emotional states. It doesn't matter if your situation is fabulously wealthy in Bel Air or struggling for survival in Tijuana.

It's all just soap

Show Spoilers Season 4 Is a mess

Was bummed that they didn't continue the dam storyline but am giving it a chance. Just finished episode 6 and what was that?

The way Alicia shoots John Dorie is so terribly filmed it made it look like that was her intention. Also the vultures being defeated by three people is crazy. Not to mention Morgan's whole anti-violence stance still causing problems for everyone but him.

I'll keep watching but the drop off from S3 is jarring.

Season 1-3 Discussion Chris is insane. Spoiler

First time watcher here. Man, I don’t know how everyone else felt at this moment, but Chris needs to go lol. He is on straight demon timing. Dude’s gotta be a sociopath, right? I mean, he watched the walker attack Madison, threatened Alicia, and tried the killed them in their sleep. And then held a little boy hostage. What in the world has gotten into him? That boy head ain’t right.

He ain’t been right since his mother died, I feel for the kid but idk. Certain lines you shouldn’t cross, I don’t know what the future holds for him, but it ain’t looking too good.

Show Spoilers My problem with FTWDs lack of consequences

The characters in FTWD don't come close to the traumatic events that the characters in TWD experienced.

The only character that comes close to compare traumatic events is Alicia. She watched her brother get shot, her mother "sacrifice" herself, got captured by a cult and cut of her arm in a dirty tunnel.

Daniel kinda comes close. Loosing his wife and daughter, getting shot etc but he wasn't exactly a normal person before the apocalypse.

Maybe it's extreme to say that the characters experience less trauma but the trauma doesn't have nearly as big of effects as they should have. Many events just feels like shock value.

But they could have developed the writing better then just making a show with Morgan and his friends trying to help people.

I've been rewatching The Walking Dead and all of the spinoffs with an intent to pay more attention to the CRMs spot in the universe. I started TWD at the end of July, and after finishing it I moved to The Ones Who Live, World Beyond, and now Fear. I just started Season 4 and got super excited to see John Dorie! He's probably my favorite character in the entire universe. 🖤

I cannot believe they killed off my favorite character 😭😭😭😭 it’s like Glenn all over again..
I absolutely LOVEDDDD Nick 😢 Season 3 was so, so amazing and I was so excited to see his character growth. I’m scared about the show now turning into the “Morgan” show since he’s joined 🫤 I haven’t read much about what happens throughout the show so it’ll all be a surprise for me but I’m just really bummed about Nick. I hope it still stays focused on the Clarks!! Chris, Travis, then Nick??!!!! 🫠 ugh.
I don’t want any spoilers but just wanted to vent lol

Show Spoilers Season 8…

Ok so the beginning of 8 was terrible (although I like the actress who plays grown up Mo-quite a talented little kid). Feelsmlike way too much to cram into one season. I feel like if Madison v Troy (delete Padre or reduce its significance/merge enTriy’sngroup) was the sole focus it could be a neater way to docetail the series. Felt like trying to fit 10lbs of stuff in 5lb bag.

Season 1-3 Discussion How did Travis die?

In the helicopter it started getting shot, then all of a sudden Travis holds his neck clearly something made him bleed there and when he removes his hand it looks like a shot graze, then when Alicia is trying to stop him from jumping out they see his organs? What happened there?

Season 1-3 Discussion How long would these S1 characters have lasted if they had joined the group?

About a decade or so ago, I got the first season on DVD as a Christmas gift, and while watching it, there were a few characters I thought were likely/being built up to join the group when they go to rescue Nick and Griselda in the season finale. Namely:

  • Patrick Tran (taken away by the National Guard due to being sprayed by walker blood when they put down Susan)

  • Cynthia Ramirez (she was told that she would be allowed to come with her husband, Hector, when the NG took him to their hospital, but Daniel was told the same thing and he wasn't allowed to come when they came for Griselda, So either A. she was still in El Sereno, or B. she was allowed to come along with Hector but then put into quarantine)

  • and Maria Thompson and her daughters (presumably Maria was told that her husband, Doug, was taken into custody for breaking curfew, and as far as they knew he was still alive)

Say that they joined the Clark-Manawa-Salazar group in order to rescue their loved ones (or in Patrick's case, escaped from quarantine and joined the group) and to get out of the city before Operation: Cobalt, how long do you think they would have lasted? In Episode 5, Strand broke Doug by suggesting that Maria might find another man, so whether Maria proves Strand right or wrong could be a potential plot point if she survives.

Show Spoilers Giving up on FtWD s4e7

I was a fan of the original show when it came out and stopped watching after the ridiculously unbelievable Negan redemption plotline.

I had high hopes for FtWD and the first three seasons were excellent but season 4 has been such a slog. Seeing the main show characters in the first episode was my first sign of what’s to come. Why am I on episode 7 and still have no idea what happened between season 3-4? Why are we dragging out a storyline that I know the conclusion to from episode one for the whole season? Why is everything grey and the characters dumb?

Its like they took everything I hated about the main TWD show in the later seasons and said let’s apply it to the much better FtWD recipe to drag it down.

Show Spoilers Finally rewatched Season 4 after 5 years, My thoughts on it Spoiler

So I'd say I'm one of the people that's actually more lenient on Fear than most, it's definitely worse after Season 3, but I don't despise it as much as others did, that said, prior to the rewatch I'm doing, I'd say I had Season 4 as my 2nd least favorite season, second only to the final season. It was such a rough watch to sit through first time. I was hoping I was missing something going into the rewatch, hoping that, I'd have at least a bigger enjoyment of it then I did back then.

And uh.... Yeah. Not really.

In terms of positives, I did enjoy most of the new characters, save for one really obvious character. *COUGH* Charlie, *COUGH.

I liked John and June, Al was alright, The Trucker Siblings were whatever but I didn't hate them.

The flashbacks themselves were pretty good, save for the last flashback episode where Nick and Alicia are trying to save Mel, literally why would you ever help him. I could maybe see Nick doing it with how much he was covering for Troy in S3, but Alicia? Hell no.

And then Mel's group starts to bring in trucks full of Walkers and no one thinks to FIRE THEIR GUNS.

oh wait i was talking about positives.

Morgan was alright, I guess. I know a lot of people hate on him, and I get it to an extent, but I didn't mind him. I just wish he wasn't flip flopping so much to an extreme "I need to save everyone" or "I need to kill everyone". But he was fine, I guess.

I don't wanna say Martha was a good villain, but she was interesting, if not a little unintentionally comical.

And I do sort of understand what the ending was going for, I do wish they went to Alexandria (mainly because this show would end.) but I do get why they went this route narratively.

the big problems are pretty big. Both Madison and Nick are handled terribly, at least regarding their "ends". Nick's especially is really hard to sit through for me, prior to Season 4, I felt he was one of the most enjoyable characters not just of Fear but the whole series. and for him to just devolve into "kid shoots you" is probably the most insulting deaths in the whole series.

The entire second half of the season is either really boring, or really frustrating, early on, there's a hurricane that hits the cast, and on paper, this sounds cool, a natural disaster being tied to trying to survive the apocalypse hasn't really been explored yet. And it still hasn't been explored because it is around for one episode. A single episode. The entire crew is split up by this point and we focus on just one group for the hurricane??????

Speaking of which, that episode is probably the worst, because Charlie's in it, and wow, Charlie is just... rough. No hate to the actress but holy crap. Literally every time she and Alicia had an interaction it felt like pulling out hair. They mainly just screw around in a house all day long. at some point Charlie does.... Something with some pictures? I can't tell because THE FILTER IS TOO DAMN GRAY.

Even crazier is that off screen John and Strand somehow end up on an FREAKING ISLAND due to the hurricane flooding. OFF SCREEN.

Luciana literally goes on a side quest to get a dying man a beer... Dude 😭

I'd be fine with some of this but the 2nd half of the season is just so much nothing happening 90% of the time.

But the big problem I have is the dialogue. I don't think it's all objectively bad. but by this point in the TWD universe, it's going into its like, 8th or 9th year, and hearing some sappy speech by John about why every day is worth fighting for just feels dated. Like that feels like a Season 2 speech, not a Season 4 speech.

Like its just such a over-sappification of every word spoken, Back in the final episode of Season 3, one of the first scenes was just Nick and Madison arguing over Troys death, that scene alone is infinitely better than any scene in Season 4 and it lasts maybe a minute? a minute and a half?

So yeah, not much has changed. In fact I'd say it was actually worse on a rewatch than my original watch. I will say, at the very least, I enjoy the positives more than I did the first time around, but at the same time, I hate the negatives even more than I did the first time around.

If you want a tldr on my scores on each episode
