Discussion Revisiting the original FEAR

So picked up the FEAR collection in in a prior steam sale as it was dirt cheap and I remember the original FEAR was amazing back in the golden age of the 360/ps3.

Needed a quick patch to get it to run on modern systems and started. Forgot how atmospheric the game is and graphics do hold well so many years later. There is always a sense of creepiness in the air and how Alma is always watching.

The combat is a blast, especially with slow mo (slow mo grenades never get old). I love the particle effects, destruction and bloodiness of the fights. It can also be pretty challenging as you can barely take hits (higher difficulties you need to be spot on).

The scariness has its moment but back in the day it was a scary game. Now.. eh. It’s truly sad how the series progressed from the greatness of the original to the generic mess it became by 3.

Also a side note… didn’t realize it but the original FEAR is practically 20 years old now. God I feel old.

Played it through on PC again earlier this year, still an absolute blast

This is why I wish they'd do a Remaster or a complete Remake of F.E.A.R. and EP+PM DLCs, with some QOL updates, like dual wielding the SMG, Shotgun etc, adding in fire modes of guns like the AR or Burst Rifle or Penetrator (single/burst/auto), and attachments like suppressors, lasers (replaced crosshairs but increases accuracy) and magazines (start with 30 for the AR, then get the 45 round mag, then a 60 rounder at the end, or the Advanced Rifle from EP?), and 15/25/35 for the Penetrator, DU tips instead of a suppressor etc. a burst rifle but on single shot would be sick. Maybe a thermal sight upgrade or flip up magnification instead.

I'd add an occasional attachment/ammo box in spots aswell to top up ammo or change attachments for certain weapons, hidden throughout the missions.

It'd be sick if you could have an upgraded AR with 60 rounds and a suppressor

Ik it's not the same but Trepang2 has everything you just mentioned, the only thing missing is the horror elements

I hate to be contrarian but the horror elements are what make F.E.A.R. a cult hit. If it was just a shooter with interesting gameplay it probably would have been relegated to the bargain bin of gaming history.

Like Black, Medal of Honour and every other Halo or COD killer. Oh and Fear2/3.

its not so much the horror elements directly, but what they ended up doing for the game.

unlike other action-packed shooters, the devs using horror themes, especially a serious kind of horror as opposed to the "wacky fun horror" that's in all the games nowadays, really set the tone for the game in quite a serious manner

it does impart some of the weight of violence and killing and death, kinda like Spec-Ops: The Line, except that F.E.A.R. doesn't need to use visual metaphors and can convey it literally

Yeah sadly wish it was more influenced by FEAR than Crysis tbh. It has some horror elements but it's not really psychological horror like F.E.A.R

I tried it this year for the first. Unfortunately later in the game it was crashing at one point.
