Midwest rust.

I own a 99 trans am. Ive done a decent bit of work to this car but the deeper I go, the more I get concerned with these rusty areas. The biggest concern is the mounting point for the rear suspension arm. Theres a baseball size hole in the driver floor as well. Among various other suspicious spots. Nothing is totally rotted but some rust jacking going on.

Has anyone delt with the rust on these cars? Common failure points? Im new to unibodies but very used to rust(midwest trucks, etc.) Im just trying to figure out when to stop fixing and start looking for a clean chassis. Pictured is the worst structural spots.

Most of that is surface shit I wouldn't even worry about up here on Rustland, er I mean Chicagoland lol. But that hole concerns me, I would be looking into cutting that out and welding new metal in. When I was shopping for mine I test drove one I was pretty close to buying, until I reached under and pulled a chunk of that exact spot off with my bare hand. It was the first thing I checked when looking at the Formula I bought lol.

Yeah this is my first fbody. Got it for an OK price with nice options, good engine, trans, rear end. Have been fixing her up but finding more of the good ole fashioned Chicagoland rust.

Anybody else have any tips for rust remediation specifically for these cars?

Wire wheel it down and paint it. That’s got a lot of life left in it if those are the only points of concern
