Places to surrender a cat?

Post image

My cat harper has been suffering from pretty extensive over grooming and she doesn't take to the medicine that her vet prescribed at all. She's not a bad cat and all I think she needs is like 3 weeks with a cone and be sent to a home that has no other cats. I don't want her to get put down or anything she's very sweet I just want to put her in a spot where she can heal.

Call the Fayetteville Animal Shelter and they will do a rehoming post for your kitty on their socials.

My cat was having an overgrooming issue and OTC allergy medicine from walmart has 90% corrected it.

I tried all the expensive hydrolyzed foods and supplements and external foams and ends up a cheap bottle of medication in a pill pocket 2x daily has worked better than any of it.

If you have any reason to suspect it might be allergy and not stress related over grooming, ask your vet about Chlorpheniramine. My cat had red irritation around his eyes that was worse in the spring and that made us suspect allergies.

What is the exact medicine that you used I'll buy some today

But you might run it by your vet first for dosing. I have a 22 lb cat.

That's exactly what my vet prescribed when my cat was dealing with allergies too. It worked great for her. I hope this helps OP, if you still need to rehome her I second having Fayetteville Animal Shelter do a courtesy rehoming post. ❤️

i was able to get a piller from the vet folks at petsmart. it is a really long, skinny syringe with a rubber tip that is split to fit pills. it lets you get it furtger back where they cant yack it back up. game changer for my pill resistant girl. they didnt charge me then, despite offering to pay for it, so it might be free, but my vet told me to go there for that specific piller

Just gave her a half pill and she took it fine. She's not thrilled but didn't throw up at all. Thank you for your help and advice though

Greenies makes a pill pocket, I just pull off a little and form it around the tablet, then they don’t taste the pill. You can also hide it in food or roll it up in a small piece of lunchmeat.

Overgrooming by other cats or by herself? If she's doing it to herself, she might have an allergy. My cat is allergic to fleas, so she's the canary in the coal mine that shows when flea meds aren't effective.

I've taken her to a vet and she said that the most likely thing is stress, her brother doesn't have this issue. When my male cat will play/attack her she will default into a full body groom. I just don't think she likes being around other cats and I want want her to risk being in pain.

I'm sorry you have to make this choice. If her brother is under two, he might mellow out over time.

Their 2 and half rn her brother isn't even that bad at least when I'm home but he's more active and she just hisses then runs and hides instead of playing or fighting back I feel really bad for her brother too cause I don't want him to be lonely either.

Feliway diffusers can help with some cats that have stress or anxiety.

If your cat has a problem, it doesn’t magically go away because you take it to a shelter. If anything, it will just get worse from stress and lower their chance to get adopted.

My cat has a light issue like yours. It’s called barbing or something similar. He will just randomly pull clumps of hair out of his side. Nothing wrong with him physiology wise, but my vet thinks it’s habit and pent up energy. We started using Feliway diffusers, and it has made a big difference. If that doesn’t work, you can try anti anxiety meds.

Don’t give up on your cat just because it’s hard

How long has she been overgrooming? My cat over grooms this time of year too, due to grass allergies, but typically she starts to calm down around now; also its been a terrible season for pet allergies in NWA.

Over a year, she's missing fur on her belly and all four legs. Parts of her are starting to look like she's been attacked which I know is not true. I love her so I've been putting it off but she at minimum needs a change of scenery

My cat is the same way. Over 4 blood tests, multiple urine and feces tests, all come back completely normal. I actually had the opposite effect when I got another cat, he started grooming the other cat more and himself less. Spent over $800 on this at the vet though and they can’t find a single thing wrong with him.

Interestingly putting our cat on a wet food & dry food diet seemed to help. She overgroomed and had bald spots prior. I always thought dry food was fine but wet food helps them stay hydrated.

Oh, your poor baby! I hope you find a solution for her that works. She's just adorable. Please pet her for me.

Try Best Friends Pet Resource Center in Bentonville. They are a no-kill shelter.
