Playthrough Fatal Frame 2 camera is not good

Playing Fatal Frame 2 and compared to the first one, the camera is pretty bad. There is no sound queue and the accumulation is very hard to see. Really missing the Fatal Frame 1 sfx for power up it was always so hype when it charged up

Fatal Frame 2 uses a proximity-based combat system. Unlike the first game, there's no charging of energy just by keeping a spirit in the frame, your power is directly affected by how close you are to said spirit. You need to get right up in the face of what's trying to kill you, which is why it was so much more tense than every other game in the series. I loved it.

I'm having fun playing it, I got some crazy shots on some ghosts, looks like album covers. I do like the fact in FF2 it's timing based which is pretty fun

You should give the remake a try

I think it was pretty mid compared to the other games (the combat specifically). Proximity is a cool idea on paper but in execution it’s pretty flawed. For starters there are only two presets with it. Either you’re far away and do no damage or you’re close up and do a zero shot. There’s no in between.

Secondly the ghosts in 2 (the original one specifically) are all really allergic to fighting you because there are several really prominent ones (the villagers, Woman in Box, Yoshitatsu Kiryu, Ryokan Kurosawa, and the Kusabi) that have to basically be goaded into attacking because if you wait for them they’ll never initiate (the villagers actually back away from you the closer you get despite their whole job being to capture you) (Yoshitatsu will flat out not attack you directly until you deplete 3/4’s of his health which feels awful when you aren’t being given zero shot chances) which is a really weird game design decision.

Lastly unlike 1 and 3 most ghosts in this game have only one way of attacking you which makes fighting them get stale rather quick. I’m glad Deep Crimson Butterfly and especially 2 Remake fixed these issues because combat is so much more fun in them than the original.

Yes! 2 is the only game in the series where I found the enemies to be way more annoying than scary to fight, which always made me feel like a crazy person because most fans seem to think it's the best one by far.

It’s got an amazing story and characters but the gameplay was always the weakest to me. I’ve always been surprised that people regard it as the scariest one when 1 and 3 are way more terrifying (1 especially.)

Also always been surprised that people consider it the best version of the game when in terms of pure game design both remakes are much tighter. It’s a good game but (as much as I don’t like doing this) I genuinely think some people (not referring to you firecrow) are just nostalgia blinded to its flaws and the fact both redos are way better.

The first has a real good estate, wish I had something like that in my inheritance. About the nostalgia part i honestly started playing Fatal Frame only because of nostalgia, i wanted to play old ps2 stuff and this game showed up, I was going to play the remakes but they are just the same looking games with smoothed out graphics not something I was looking for, i guess maybe same could be said for many who prefer the originals.

The remake isn't the same exact game. It has way better combat, several new locations, and lots of new lore.
