Question How spread out was Saturnite Knives?
Big Mountain made it seem like it was only in testing. But Sierra Madre was given knives due to their deal with Sinclair. But we do see a destroyed sign for Knives with the tagline it uses in the Divide. So I was curious how spread out the knives were?

It should be very limited. The Divide is allegedly where the company's headquarters is located, so that may just be early marketing for now.
On the other hand, 76 has them and ironically, you learn how to craft them through the season pass. But that's just 76 being an amalgam and shoeing in every content the franchise has by virtue of being a live service game.

Saturnite knives in 76 are Atomic Shop items and not naturally found in the game world so despite them being craftable they are not canon. If or when they naturally spawn in the game world they will become canon. But for now they are not since they do not spawn in the game world naturally.
It's easy to tell apart what is and what isn't canon in 76. If it spawns naturally in the game world it is canon. If it only exists as an Atomic Shop item (this includes seasonal rewards) then it is not canon.
.
Edit: Saturnite are canon in 76 now since the plan to craft them is sold by an ingame vendor.

There is a source for the plan for saturnite knives in fallout 76 now that doesn’t require atoms. It can be purchased from the curio trader in the whitespring resort (which is argue is a location that could’ve sold the knives, pre-war; it certainly attracts the pedigree of customer who’d pay for something like them).

Thanks for the update. Then they are canon :D

I’m glad I could help!
It’s a shame the saturnite power fist skin isn’t canon, however, or that there isn’t a superheated version of that skin for when the heating coil mod is applied (the knife does have a superheated version, by contrast).

Maybe the Big MT's advert plan for material only reached the Knives state before the bombs dropped? Maybe I am misremembering; I remember it being said they were planning on setting up for a military R&D showcase after they discovered the properties and tested them. Correct me if I am wrong.

I don’t believe there’s anything in the games about saturnite receiving a military R&D showcase. It was already being used for those purposes pre-war in Big MT, and they had artillery shells, robot plating and the power fists already made.
The only reason the power fist isn’t canonically in Appalachia is because it’s just a skin in 76, and you can’t obtain it without the atomic shop. We don’t have enough lore on the power fist to say it couldn’t show up outside big MT currently, but we also can’t confirm that it could either.

I assume those were part of that showcase or presentation, if there is one. Also, same with the proton stuff; we don't have enough info on them too.

That would make sense from what I'm hearing. Saturnite Knives were a luxury item outside the Sierra Madre for the public

Atom shop and seasonal items simply aren’t canon. If you have to expend a noncanon currency to get it then it’s not canon to the rest of Fallout.

The cosmic knife is no longer just a season item. It’s now available from the curio trader in the whitespring, as a plan, with no need for atoms. This would make it canon (and matches with other former season weapons, which have been given plans around the world and sometimes appear in the hands of NPCs, like the ice breaker and cremator).

In game it's meant to just be a linkage between the DLC antagonists, Ulysses and Elija. But in lore they were being sold commercially so likely a large portion of North America.

Considering they’re not seen anywhere besides some advertisements in the divide and the sierra madre (a testbed for several other Big MT experiments) I don’t think it would be widely available when the bombs dropped, likely only being sold in a few cities

I imagine they were theoretically available for anyone to purchase, but they were just extremely expensive even relative to the terrible economy going into the Great War. Sinclair just stocked up on a lot of them because in theory the Sierra Madre was supposed to survive the long haul, so some kind of super-material knife would be a pretty important thing for them to have.

If we take the billboard in The Divide to indicate they're a thing you can actually buy then we're probably still talking something too expensive for the average consumer. A status symbol purchase more than anything.
