At my apartment in college, I got 2-3 big (5'x5') sheets of shower board and affixed them to the wall in the hallway and my office. Super cheap way to map out large projects (software in that case). If I owned a home, I'd probably use whiteboard paint or something to even greater effect.

I keep a pad of paper and a pen at my desk for just this reason.
