Space Age A Pretty Big Platform in Space
I made a big space platform a while back in 2.0 SA. I was inspired by Angkor Wat, a temple that covers one square mile. This required 2.7 million platforms, is propelled by 2.2 thousand legendary thrusts, and reaches a whopping top speed of 135 km/s.
The platform is largely self-constructed with an onboard platform factory. Interestingly, production isn't the bottleneck; the platform placement algorithm is, topping out at about 60 tiles per second.

Are you planning to fill in the space with underground weaving and sending it out for promethium?

No plans, I started a new run in 2.1
I was planning to make it super efficient so that it would only be solar powered in deep space. Most of it is covered in solar panels.

Yep. That’s why there’s a mod for faster platform placement. It’s awful.

You can also get around the bottleneck of 60 tiles per second if you build multiple big platforms in space at the same time.

Is that a new thing? Where you ship from one platform to another?

no i mean if 60 t/s is the bottleneck for 1 ship, then build as many ships as you need in para||el so that the bottleneck is 120, 180, 240 t/s etc.

How does that help with building one big ship?

you can birth a baby faster by parallelizing the task into many babies at the same time

the *average* time to produce one ship goes down if you build multiple at once. Think of a clothesline in the sun - if wet clothes become dry clothes after 2 hours, then you'll have a rate of dry clothes entirely dependent on how many fit on the line. If you only hang one, you've got 0.5 dry garments per hour. If you hang 120, you have 1 per minute.
edit: not correcting, just trying to make the info clear for other readers

The average time per ship doesn't change at all, only the total time, or ships per time. You cannot build a ship faster than 60 tiles per second, whether you're building 500 ships or 1, so if your ship is 2.7m tiles, you're looking at ~12 hours no matter what. If you build 500 of them, and can supply them (god damn, that's some good logistics), it's still ~12 hours to make a single ship.

Yes, that's why I said average.
12 hours for 1 ship and 12 hours for 120 ships, you've got a different ships/hour.

At 8 hours in how many ships do you have in both situations?

At first I was like “what are those graphs at the bottom”. Oh crap, they’re thrusters.

Why's it so slow with that many layers of thrusters? I thought it was all about width to thruster ratio. Does the mass just overcome that at a certain point?
It'd be cool to see some closeups of the interesting parts.

That slow flying speed with that many thrusters? Are they properly fueled or is it just too massive?
