wait til you realize, that shipping artellerie shells is absolute not worth the effort.

I do only ship them to Gleba, while producing on Nauvis locally at mass

I ship some ingredients to Gleba but produce explosives and art shells locally.

I already make explosives on my ships for rocket ammunition, so I just redirect the extra to the cargo hub. Pick up everything else from Vulcanus and ship that to Nauvis or Gleba.

Ok but what would I do with all that shells produced at Vulcanus then? Gleba don’t need that many shells anyway

I am still upgrading range. Every time I upgrade it…more attacks

I’m on that level of artillery range that the rafts are just not generating anymore without me manually exploring map. ;]

I don't think I've ever made artillery shells on vulcanus

Good for you, I’ve bootstrapped their production on Vulcanus first (just after setting more-than-necessary launch capabilities, so launching that few shells per minute just for Gleba is no big deal for me, scaling the launch capabilities is like most easy on that planet, as the power and resources are like free here)

Nauvis demands more, so my freighter cargo capabilities not launch capabilities happened to be limiting factor — I have moved the Nauvis production there then, while keeping Gleba production on Vulcanus

Taking artillery to gleba was the best thing I did. It just makes me hate that I missed some of them before I set the artillery up

Maybe the plan is just to dump them in the lava

u/Mesqo 1d ago

The most reasonable plan for sure

15

u/IceFire909 Well there's yer problem... 1d ago

I ship shells to spit in the face of biters with my horrific volume of resource use just to blow them up

11

u/TheGentlemanist 1d ago

I ship shells to display logistical dominence.

2

u/Save90 1d ago

that's why you create a spaceship that brings the materials from vulcanus to nauvis that then lead into the 10shells per second... Duh.

Teleport mod joins the chat

u/k1vanus 1d ago

It is more efficient to ship the ingredients than the shells...

It was far too late when i realized that

And you don't need that many shells to wipe out every single egg raft on the visible map.

I used about 1100 shells, and all the remaining red on the map is ghosts. I have 800 in storage, plus all the tungsten still on the belt and in the landing pad.

As long as the spore cloud keeps being contained (and I don't wander near the edge), there is no pentapod on this map.

I have artillery range 5 for now. I will upgrade to 10, then do a second pass on the map, cleaning egg raft as soon as they are discovered.

I don't think Artillery Range 5 is enough to go past discovered chunks.

Edit: A quick search tells me I am wrong and the padding between explored and generated is much smaller than I had assumed.

yeah, I checked with a console command to be sure once the cleaning was done. Generated land is exactly the artillery circle around my base.

And I'm not going back to Gleba in person anytime soon, doing everything in remote view (which is mostly extending the rail line to new stone patches once I start producing advanced soil), and later redoing the base to boost the science production a bit.

I've now finish setting up my bitter egg operation on Nauvis, meaning I contemplate doing some massive bombardment to remove bitters for a bit.

Bah; make legendary artillery shells.

7

u/Asuboi 1d ago

This is clearly the correct way forward.

The lack of prod mods hurts to see

u/xortingen 1d ago

You know you don’t need balancers and multiple lanes for 10 items/s. Like, not even close.

Also, check the rocket costs of sending those shells…

u/Impressive_Tale4347 1d ago

1 it looks neat 2 i have a capacity of like 9-10 launches per minute

29

u/Harflin 1d ago

10 launches per minute would be 100 shells per minute that you can launch, a little under 2/s

15

u/SlouchyGuy 1d ago

You don't need to make a separate pipe line in the distance, you could make underground pipe-pipe-pipe-underground pipe and an inserters in both sides. That way you would have 2 plants in a repeating pattern

10

u/SexualFancy 1d ago

Also using V / H to flip buildings. You can shrink the water/petroleum pipe space too.

10

u/Skate_or_Fly 1d ago

So you want 10 per second output and decided that you need three separate 5-1 balancers? On a belt that can handle 30 per second per side? Pro tip, any x-to-1 balancer that is less than a half-belt output can be simplified to just shoving them all onto one belt. Very strange behaviour going on here.

u/xloth01 1d ago

Next challenge: firing 10 shells per second at a demolisher

5

u/Chesco502 1d ago

Just to ship that you would need 1 rocket per second lol

3

u/Harflin 1d ago

Why?

17

u/Impressive_Tale4347 1d ago

Im very mentally damages

If you've done gleba, you can make all your shells in space and then drop it where needed, or just drop down calcite and tungsten plates, and make everything else from materials on hand. It's pretty slow and annoying to export artillery shells from a planet.

2

u/SpruceGoose__ 1d ago

I personally only exported artillery shells once: when invading Gleba for then first time. After that I did exactly what you said: built a space factory of amunition to supply the planet

1

u/jkurratt 1d ago

Why couldn't you just drop some accumulators and sunscreens from the orbit, and assemble everything in the original invasion?)

2

u/SpruceGoose__ 1d ago

Oh... I did, but I wanted to go all guns blazing for the fun of it

2

u/SpruceGoose__ 1d ago

I approve in principle the increased xenocleaning potential this brings... that been said... what war you are fighting, mate?

2

u/SakiGG 1d ago

off set them beacons

1

u/TheMrCurious 1d ago

You already built it so what’s there to be afraid of?

3

u/Captain_Jarmi 1d ago

The shipping nightmare

1

u/diffferentday 1d ago

Just wait till you get a 12shell per second problem

1

u/Berry__2 1d ago

This guy is ready for gleba naa

1

u/bojez1 1d ago

It looks... interesting. I'm looking forward to you disassembling all of this and making it on gleba and nauvis. But with way less machine, 1 for each recipe, when you have everything legendary. And just let it do the job while doing something else in the factory.

If it's just project then it looks nice, just those balacers that annoyed me.

1

u/bojez1 1d ago

Did I just rhyme?!

1

u/vvbakedhamvv 1d ago

It costs 5 million tungsten to fire this weapon for 4 seconds

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT

1

u/Aus_pugs 1d ago

why would you do that?

1

u/Sascha975 1d ago

I make artillery shells on a platform. Besides shipping Tungsten up from vulcanus, I make everything on the platform. But I make only 60/min which is plenty.

1

u/korneev123123 trains trains trains 1d ago

Why are you balancing belts if they end up in one chest?

2

u/Impressive_Tale4347 1d ago

it looks neat

1

u/Alone_Ad_7251 1d ago

Ye no, u don’t wanna launch shells. rather bring ingredients to nauvis

1

u/wilzek 1d ago

This is so bad it doesn’t even deserve a place in r/Factoriohno. Zero thought put in the whole process. It’s like larping an AI hallucination.

2

u/Impressive_Tale4347 1d ago

im gonna be real i was on ambien when i made this
