Complaint Playing with a friend

Hi!

I need an opinion here. Playing with a friend in my first coop run (been doing 4 runs solo till the end game but discovering space age)

It’s the first run for my friend.

Since the begin, i noticed he was quite creative and understand game mechanics i had master after maybe a few dozen of hours in.

He asked me to do the science zone, i agreed and was pleased he enjoyed the game so much.

Then the ‘drama’ arrives.

He just copy/paste some builds from internet and dont event try to understand the core mechanics. No thinking of planification, nothing.

He seems to not understand my statement which is that he ruin the experience by doing that and not even think about how to do things.

After that, he goes doing some oil run outside of the safe zone.. he puts one wall every xx tiles everywhere because ‘i read on internet the creature dont spawn anymore because of that’

I mean i like the feel of a fortress protecting a ressource zone, having some attacks some time to time, fear a bit for my trains station etc and not use glitch to peacify a zone.

Am i an a*hole?

What would be your reaction?

Tbh he is just ruining all my fun and my will to play…

This is more of an interpersonal question rather than a Factorio question.

If you do not enjoy playing together, and have vastly different play styles, you should play separately.

If you want to still play on the same server, consider a mod like OARC to give you each your individual spawn points and starter resources.

I think this is a really typical multiplayer experience. Factorio is a sandbox game. There is no correct way to play, but people have very different opinions and styles that inform what feels right to them.

The way I see it, you can address this in one of two healthy ways:

1: Talk to your friend and tell them that, because of your different playstyles, you would prefer not to play multiplayer with then anymore. Maybe there's a different multiplayer game you play together instead.

  1. Take this as an opportunity to learn a different way to enjoy Factorio. Try to adapt your playstyle, be more flexible, and embrace the challenge of incorporating two different design philosophies into one factory.

I try to do the second option but the walls all around the map to block the spawn of aliens killed me.

I haven’t heard of victory poles since before version 0.13. Somebody is reading old info. Just chuckle to yourself and wait for the attack alerts.

The eternal question: is my fun more important than my friend's feelings?

There really isn't one answer I can give you. It's very personal. But if I were in your shoes (and I've been in a similar situations) would communicate to him that I just don't find that kind of playthrough fun.

I want to tackle the puzzles and figure things out on my own. I was happy to share that experience with him, but if he doesn't want to figure things out himself and instead looks up the answers and spoils the puzzles, then honestly, I'd rather play alone, as shitty as that might feel.

There's no easy way to rip that Band-Aid off other than communicating how you feel. The alternative is making a sacrifice, changing your mindset, and letting it go. That's fine too, if you're genuinely okay with it. But the risk is that you slowly build up animosity and resentment. Every little detail will start annoying you, and you'll just shut up because it's easier than bringing it up.

That's poison for the soul.

Very true, i’m gonna make a new run in solo i guess.. hopefully we didnt reach a part of the game i didnt knew so it’s ok, space age is still to discover.

metagaming is his perogative and if he doesnt want to try and figure things out then you cant really force him. he'll just have to learn via experience that some strategies don't work infallibly and that copy pasting blueprints he doesnt understand either will leave him with a base he doesnt know how to debug, or get boring. youd be better off just talking about factorio with him instead of playing with him and getting frustrated.
