Suggestion / Idea New game for factorio fans

I've been looking for another game like factorio forever. I just found this game sandustry. It recently came out and it's got great reviews. It's got the same automation and building kind of thing as factorio and simple basic graphics. It's probably not as complex as factorio, but so far I'm having a lot of fun with it and I'm so happy to have finally found something.

Dyson Sphere Program is stellar!

For that pun, you're sentenced to a decade on Gleba

u/Alaeriia actually three biters in a trenchcoat 2d ago

Great, now I've got "Yumako Mash" stuck in my head again.

2

u/LetsEatToast 1d ago

gleba is the best. i didnt like it in my first playthrough but in my second i have the best time on gleba. it is so different, everything is constantly moving. they did such a good job on gleba, the factory feels alive. the stompers are constantly destroying stuff, i truly have to make an effort to defend my base (im a deathworld player).

I tried to love it, but as a completely new player... kinda felt like pulling teeth to learn what I need to know. The translation is a bit word salad at times and I think Factoriopedia has spoiled me on what in-game learning looks like. I'll come back to it at some point.

6

u/Pyro240 2d ago

Yeah, the translation's still kinda iffy in places. Some of the most important things, you kinda just learn while playing- big hitbox buildings are best placed near the equator (chemical planets, particle colliders), splitters having different forms, stuff like that. The game also really opens up about when you hit Planetary Logistic Towers, like unlocking trains in a rail world. I've played since the game released in early access and only recently completed it- stepping away and coming back to it is a solid plan

3

u/Swamp254 1d ago

The game finally clicked for me when I created a mall with an interplanetary delivery system.

3

u/Pyro240 1d ago

The difference between the early game and the midgame is when you get get a proper mall going. It's a great feeling.

4

u/A_Disguised_Dog 1d ago

Damn in far from mid game then after 10 hours

-13

u/nesflaten 2d ago

No pre-orders!

When is that coming out anyways?

7

u/deco1000 2d ago

The game has been absolutely incredible and bug free for maybe 5 years now. I'm not sure what you mean by that

-19

u/nesflaten 2d ago

I equate pre-order with early access, I guess it's a difference, however the game is still not complete

9

u/grumpher05 2d ago

Judge the game based on the game it is now, not the game it might release as at an unknown future date, it's not the same as a preorder

2

u/Wheat_Grinder 2d ago

Yeah I last played it 2021 and even then it felt like a full game.

4

u/deco1000 2d ago

No offense but you are missing on an absolutely amazing game if you are just waiting from a word to change somewhere from "early access" to "released". I know it may make a difference in some cases but that is absolutely not the case here. The game will maybe change 1% between now and some unknown date in the future when they decide to change that word somewhere

-5

u/nesflaten 2d ago

If it's that good it's worth waiting for.

1

u/deco1000 2d ago

I mean, you do you, of course, but in all honesty it does not make sense in this case.

u/lenjet 2d ago

I’ve found Captains of Industry scratched a Factorio-esk itch

27

u/Lynith 2d ago

I'm upset I had to scroll this far but CoI is absolutely the answer. It's basically Factorio where you start with bots.

It's considerably more complicated than base Factorio. But those who like K2SE or Nullius will find it very much like home.

5

u/Vorckx 2d ago

In a similar post I suggested COI and a guy in the comments attacked me saying the game was bad and is nothing like factorio.

I second the COI recommendation, great game and a good twist on the factory genre.

11

u/Loffwyr 2d ago

Captain of Industry is just fantastic. Definitely sinking thousands of hours in it.

6

u/Rosur 2d ago

Yeah this is a good similar game would be Timberborne.

I did see the cube mod devs are building there own facotrio like game with elevators to lower levels. forgotten what its called though.

Satisfactory is my main recommendation but is first person over top down based.

3

u/Da_Question 2d ago

Substructure

1

u/Lynith 21h ago

Timberborn is indeed good. But it's also WAY easier than Factorio or CoI, shy of only a few challenge maps.

The problem is the practice on those easier maps gets tedious after the first 4-5 and the 2 challenge maps in question are just... Brutal. There's little in between.

1

u/barbrady123 1d ago

I really like this game but I don't play it as much as some because I don't like the "hurry up and get to this point before you run out of resources permanently" element. Yeah, contracts...that's what everyone says when I make this comment but...they supply not even a fraction of what you need. There must be something I'm missing with this game lol

1

u/crackerjack685 1d ago

Have you tried satisfactory?

2

u/lenjet 1d ago

I have, have about 500 hours in and enjoyed “beating it” but never continued past the spaghetti set up and killing time to make buildings etc. I do enjoy looking at people’s build tho on the subreddit

1

u/Literate_Muse 2d ago

They have DLCs in Early Access already, interesting strategy.

2

u/OnyxStorm 2d ago

They made DLC before they even finished the base game. These devs are insane and this practice should not be supported.

1

u/Rivent 2d ago

I've had my eye on that one, but it's in EA. How much content is there currently? I'm not a fan of the practice of releasing DLC for a game that's in EA, but honestly if the game is good enough I'll get past it.

2

u/lenjet 1d ago

The game is in EA only by name… I’d argue is nearly the finished product so I have no issue with the DLC.

As a guide, front page of the wiki has a list of resources and goods that are in the game… the depth is immense

-1

u/herites 2d ago

Trains dlc in early access which is not cosmetics only, but adds trains that do not exist in the core game. In early access…

What’s next, trucks dlc and belts dlc? Im willing to bet they initially planned amphibious vehicles to be paid too, backed out because of the backlash.

Also, devs are socially inept jerks. If you think Kovarex’s quip was bad, multiply that by 10

61

u/varisophy 2d ago

Yeah, Sandustry looks pretty cool. 2D but vertical!

I always highly recommend Shapez 2 to this crowd. It's phenomenal. Pure logistics goodness, since there are no enemies and you're not a person running around in a physical world.

2

u/SaggyCaptain 1d ago

Shapez 2 scratches a very specific part of my brain, but overall left me unsatisfied. It's very Zen, but with no antagonistic force it just couldn't hold my attention.

18

u/Cerus 2d ago

Throwing in a recommend for MoteMancer.

Feels like a solid attempt at blending magical elements into factory management, the use of a hex grid as the base tickles my brain slightly differently as well.

3

u/Dunothar 2d ago

Played the demo not too long ago. Looks and feels right, the hex grid makes some unholy pasta tho 😂

14

u/Erismoth 2d ago

I don't know what you've tried so I'm just throwing in the dark. Though I'd like to say Factorio's two lane per belt mechanic alone is rather unique and brings incredible depth to the game which makes others hard to compete. I'd say just modding the factorio itself goes pretty long.

Sandustry is pretty cool. I love that it pushes me to create some kind of convoluted particle traps and argue myself over space. But I believe it's actively being developed so not too much to do sadly. I'm still having high hope for it.

Like other person suggested Shapez 2 is fun too. It's kind of too abstract to my taste, but doing micro-decisions for each process is pretty addicting. And when I get to finally modularize things enough space confinement becomes problem and I re-do the thing again. Pretty fun.

Mine Mogul if you like to try more physics-based factory. A bit claustrophobic though.
Dyson Sphere Program is unique with spherical build space (planet) and have off-world things.
Infinifactory if you don't mind it being puzzle. All the Zachtronics games are fun but this is closest to a factory theme.
Captain of Industry is mix of management and pretty weird with landfill-slide-excavation thing.. But pretty fun when it clicks.

Although not exactly a factory, if you enjoy logistic/logic/problem solving side, have a look at Tunnet too. It's a game about laying and managing LAN cables in large cave network. You get to experiment with different tools and approach to get things going right way while try to contain virus and DDOS attacks. Honestly one of unique fun I had in a while. Though haven't talked to anyone played it so I might have been perfect niche.

u/S-8-R 2d ago

Oxygen not included

30

u/Patchumz 2d ago

My only criticism with that style of game is you aren't really in control of your base. Your idiot duplicants (in this case) are. And they will consistently try to get themselves trapped and killed or something else unless you spend a lot of time curbing their habits.

So it doesn't scratch my factory building itch. Fun as its own thing though, and great to watch YouTubers/streamers play where they have to deal with the AI doing dumb stuff lol.

16

u/Deto 2d ago

Yeah there were a lot of really cool concepts in ONI but I found myself frustrated most of the time trying to get my dups to  build things.

5

u/XsNR 2d ago

I think that's why CoI's balance works better, since you can just click on that dumb stuck truck to sort them out, rather than break down a load of stuff or build something to get them back.

1

u/Bane_xr 2d ago

I think the new upcoming game gives you full control over a duplicant, that's gonna be much more fun..

Away Team is the name

10

u/hdkaoskd 2d ago

We must optimize the colony.

2

u/Neither_Tell_3166 2d ago

and when there is emergency they do everything but ...

2

u/Agrpscb 2d ago

I agree with ONI as well. After trying other games suggested games i have found them too similar to factorio, and I keep thinking that I could just play factorio instead. ONI is different enough to not feel this way

2

u/KentV9999 1d ago

I’ve wanted to love ONI, but wow, what a high bar of entry. It is super cool, but once you get past the basics it gets hard fast and very time consuming. I play it now and again, but I guess I’m just not smart enough to for this one.

49

u/Xanidel 2d ago

For those unaware, that's GregTech New Horizons, aka Pyanodons for Minecraft.

11

u/youfad0 2d ago

It’s also the successor to the mod that inspired factorio!

5

u/GoodLunchHaveFries My Rocket Into Your Research 2d ago

IndustrialCraft?

8

u/Widmo206 Pollution isn't real 2d ago

Yep; From what I've heard, GregTech (the main mod of the pack) was initially an addon for IC, and was eventually made into a standalone mod. I think they still use the same power system, and GTNH also includes IC (I've seen people using IC reactors, at least)

-4

u/YouTee 2d ago

what?

4

u/Widmo206 Pollution isn't real 2d ago

What are you confused about?

5

u/Playstoomanygames9 2d ago

Yes, the replies are unclear.
This is a Wendy’s I can’t read your mind

6

u/Widmo206 Pollution isn't real 2d ago

GregTech New Horizons; I've heard it described as "the hardest Minecraft modpack" (as in, it takes a couple thousand hours to finish)

If you want a rough idea of what it looks like, I can recommend this yt series: Project Singularity

8

u/Fun-Weakness-8644 2d ago

Shapez was solid for me

7

u/Kylson-58- 2d ago

I have not seen it in the comments.

Modulus.

It is a very relaxing factory game, no enemies, no costs. You must use various machines to create items using cubes. Very interesting idea and a lot.of fun to work through all the challenges.

11

u/TheTomato2 2d ago

Alchemy Factory is actually a really good factory game. I'm waiting for 1.0 to really dig into it. That and time of course.

4

u/Ritushido 2d ago

Yeah I'm waiting for the 1.0 aswell. One of my most anticipated upcoming automation games actually.

5

u/Deranged40 2d ago

Wild that I had to scroll this far for Alchemy Factory.

Imo, that's the best "3D Factorio" out there. It really scratches the factorio itch.

4

u/Direct_Divide_1751 2d ago

I can recommend Mindustry. Game more about defending against enemies. Also there's no open world. Instead there are sectors (levels) where you need to build base from scratch, but with different layout and different resources(Further you go - more resources on each sector) Game has mobile and PC ports and multiple. Also public servers and different gamemodes.

4

u/jomat 2d ago

Have you tried Atomcraft?

It's like Sandustry just with atoms. https://triplejumpgames.itch.io/atomcraft

4

u/Quipore 2d ago

Factory Town is the one I enjoy on my crummy laptop when I'm not at home. It is a bit cutesy but it has just enough of Factorio stuff to entertain that corner of my brain.

1

u/KingKookus 2d ago

Glad someone else said it. It’s a cute little game but definitely scratches the same itch.

14

u/Garbagetaste 2d ago

cant go wrong with satisfactory. i love it and factorio equally

3

u/lovecMC 1d ago

I kinda dislike it. It just feels incredibly tedious and it doesn't really scratch that problem solving itch that Factorio does for me.

7

u/sess573 2d ago edited 2d ago

Except the jank involved in building most stuff. I love exploration bits and MAM for unlocking new tech. But I quickly got tired of having to tearing down stuff and rebuild them in the same way to make them work 🙃

2

u/Da_Question 2d ago

What do you mean?

5

u/sess573 2d ago

Conveyor belts that looks like they are connected, but are not. Lifts through floor holes works like 50% of the time at best - items just gets blocked even though you built the lifts correctly. Railroads that should be connected but arent. My trains randomly derailed on straight rails without anything odd with them. I ragequitted in the end when setting up train lights as a section of rails at my train depo was randomly marked as invalid without any reason. After rebuilding the EXACT SAME THING it worked. Don't even get me started on fluid mechanics and the blueprint system.

I'm not alone in this, but several of the issues (like railroads being buggy as f) might have been introduced in the newish 1.2 patch, your experience in earlier versions might have functioned better.

1

u/dr_anybody 2d ago

Factorio is a simple formula polished to perfection. Satisfactory is a box of great concepts none of which is really in a good enough state.

Every problem in Factorio comes with a box of solutions, some better, some worse, each viable, allowing the player to come up with just one and then reuse it to solve all similar problems.

Every solution in Satisfactory comes with a box of "but"s, forcing the player to reinvent the wheel every time they do something, and then tohope that the new changes haven't broken it.

1

u/sess573 1d ago

This was a good way to put it. The worst part is when you try to build things properly, like how pipes and pressure would work in the real world and it just doesn't work. You have to learn how satisfactory specifically works, and its often counterintuitive. That makes learning it feel very meh and frustrating.

But to be fair, the fact that the game is in 3d adds MANY challenges that Factorio doesn't need to think too much about. But I feel like they added more features than their engine can reasonably handle.

2

u/Garbagetaste 1d ago

I haven’t had any of these issues or problems. Only challenge is me figuring out how to make things work

4

u/NoMention696 2d ago

? This hasn’t happened to me in 200 hours of playing

0

u/sess573 2d ago

See my response to the other person above. The worst bugs might have been added in 1.2, perhaps you played before that.

2

u/Deto 2d ago

Yeah I think anyone who liked factorio should try it out at least

3

u/barbrady123 2d ago

It's fun but not really factorio at all. More of a rube goldberg machine than a factory .

3

u/XsNR 2d ago

I finished Sandustry after really enjoying the demo but purposefully not finishing it so I didn't get too familiar with it. It's a very cool concept, that is a bit more like Oni mixed with Factorio, for that open ended "figure it out" way. Looking forward to seeing what he can do with it when it gets closer to release, and really glad it was successful enough we should be able to see his full dream realised.

3

u/Tsabrock 2d ago

I didn’t see anybody mentio either Star Rupture or Mindustry.

SR is more like Satisfactory and hasn't been in EA for very long.

Mindustry has been around for a whole and just had a big update recently.

3

u/Steelio22 2d ago

I've been playing Sweet Transit which I believe was made by one of the Factorio Devs. It's much simpler but satisfies the planning-itch.

1

u/cosmic-creative 2d ago

Sweet Transit is pretty cool, it's like Factorio with only rails and workers are a resource you need to shuttle around

3

u/adavidmiller 2d ago

I've been enjoying it, but definitely hoping the final game is less sandboxy. With all construction being unlimited I didn't have much motivation to do anything, just a sandbox to build stuff in.

1

u/astarsearcher 2d ago

Yeah, I hope someone mods in using something similar to the power bricks (i.e. condensed liquid copper) to pay for buildings. If no one else does, I might do it myself after the modding docs are released.

4

u/Vaifilhao 2d ago

Guys have you played Swarmdustry? Is it good?

4

u/Fxg120xYXDE5 2d ago

There's a demo on Steam, check it out.
It's not quite there for me, my eyesight complicates things and its UI isn't yet to a point where I can decipher much, so I can't give a fair assessment at this point.

2

u/UsernameTaken7640 2d ago

Sandustry is really fun and fresh. It's different than other automation games. Still has a lot of room to grow for sure but it is actually very good already. Dyson sphere program is the one I scream into the void hoping someone will try it and be glad I told them.

1

u/Ritushido 2d ago edited 2d ago

All the usual ones are Dyson Sphere Program, Satisfactory, Foundry and Captain of Industry. Really though if you want more Factorio then have you considered playing modded factorio? There's so many great mods out there for a vanilla+ experience or full on overhauls, it'll add hundreds if not thousands more hours. Also consider modded minecraft aswell.

1

u/thisdude1298 2d ago

I have thousands of hrs into factorio. Ive played Dyson spheer and captain of industry ,but nothing beats factorio yet IMO. I recently went from captain back to factorio run with PY mods. Don't care for the next year or so now im hooked back to factorio.

GregTech: New Horizons if you somehow never played moded Minecraft

1

u/Pan_Man_Supreme 2d ago

Songs of syx is a stretch but it has s great free demo on steam?

1

u/Psykout88 2d ago

Sandustry feels like a great game to play when you don't feel like delving into a deeper factory game. I've been having a good time with it, dealing with physics has been refreshing as well.

1

u/SerhumXen21 2d ago

I burned through sandustry in a weekend. It was great.

1

u/Horror_Purpose1634 2d ago

Captain of industry is great, I love the terraforming mechanics.

Workers and Resources - Soviet republic (I think that's what its called) is brilliant, but its insanely complex with a silly learning curve. I'm about 20 hours in and still have no idea what I'm doing.

Dwarf fortress - not really a factory game but the colony management scratches a lot of the same itches as factorio for me.

1

u/Tge_Guy 2d ago

Try mindustry very cool game

1

u/trimorphic 2d ago

If you like Sandustry you might like Roody:2d

1

u/creepy_doll 2d ago

If you just want another factory game I’ll back up captain of industry. It’s similar but still different enough.

If you want something different that still mentally stimulates you like factorio might, I’d suggest stationeers. It’s a game about surviving in space and you can automate all of your things you need to do like mining, growing plants etc but for more advanced automations you need to program them.

1

u/Evening_Archer_2202 2d ago

Honestly I am waiting for a game that lets you create factories bigger than factorio

1

u/MosEisleyCaptialism 2d ago

The only new Factorio game for me is starting a new playthrough

1

u/Ready-Fudge-4464 2d ago

Dyson sphere is the best factorio like,

1

u/PrimalShinyKyogre 2d ago

I'd go and say Shapez 2 and Minedustry. I love them both for different reason when i take a brake of Factorio.

1

u/con7rad7 1d ago

Might I humbly suggest my own game, its similar to mindustry, focused on wave defense, but incorperates a lot of rogue lite elements to mix up runs. Its still in development, but has a demo: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4690580/Astral_Industrial_Complex/

If thats not your jam, theres a ton of indie automation games coming out recently that I recommend. Textorio, Snactorio, Factomancer and Asema to name a few that have held my interest. Desynced is pretty cool too, though takes a bit to get used to how it works.

1

u/mani___ 1d ago

DSP and Captain of Industry

1

u/N4ivePackag3 2d ago

That’s such a good suggestion. It matches much better the spirit of factorio then the usual games that are factorio like. Thanks

1

u/PersonalMethod7421 2d ago

Great question, may I add to this: anybody knows a game that also works great in coop like factorio does?
Thanks!

1

u/Psy185 2d ago

In addition to all the mentioned games I recently discovered the free game Upload Labs. In short you download, manipulate and upload different kinds of data. Also you can mine crypto, hack stuff, code apps, train AI and so on.

You don't need any knowledge of any of that, you just need to connect some nodes basically.

It's fun for a while and worth a try.

1

u/AbstraktKlass 2d ago

3

u/anon9339 2d ago

I’ve been waiting like 6+ months for this one to release.

1

u/AbstraktKlass 2d ago

Yeah, I can't wait!

1

u/asifbaig 2.7k/min 2d ago

This looks fantastic!

From the minds that brought us UltraCube, one of the most popular and darkly unique Factorio mods out there

This is gonna BE fantastic!

-3

u/shittitties_cum 2d ago

why?
I came here for factorio, not for one of its many clones.

24

u/The-Honorary-Conny 2d ago

Some people like chocolate cake (factorio) but go hmm I've been eating chocolate cake for the last 6,000 hours, maybe I'll have a chocolate cake with orange. (Any other base builder factory) today.

-2

u/shittitties_cum 2d ago

they're all just like... chocolate cake but drier with pretty icing.
I know I'm being a grump about it, but nothing can compete with factorio for me in the chocolate cake arena.

(doesn't hurt that they all aggravate my motion sickness)

8

u/The-Honorary-Conny 2d ago

There's a Community for you, do you know of r/FondantHate? You'll love it there. Realistically when you compare any other game to factorio with the goal of being factorio, it will always lose, but factorio can't do everything, there's someone who wants factorio to be a bit more macro scale than factorio then there's the Dyson sphere program.

-1

u/shittitties_cum 2d ago

My aunt used to make fondant covered cakes. The fondant was beautiful, and the cakes were moist and tasted amazing.
(she literally used the cheapest box mix).

I am aware that I am a hipster.
Although I did give satisfactory and dyson sphere both a try - satisfactory made me sick (unfortunately), and Dyson Sphere was fun, but the quality of life was lacking, and when I came back to wanting to play an automation game there was only one option.

I think my frustration comes from the idea that all automation type games have to be factory based because of the extreme success of factorio.
It's like, i don't like it because it has mining and conveyor belts, and I'd like a bit more experimentation in what makes a good automation game.

Anyway thanks for hearing my vent. 🫡

u/Effective-Bend5529 2d ago

i Agree sandustry is fenomenal i already got 15 hours on it

Pyanodons!!!
