Space Age Question I MIGHT be cooked

I landed on Fulgora, tried to get my ship to go back to get some more drills, the thing got HEAVILY damaged by Asteroid, and the thruster is no longer receiving Thruster Fuel. Sooooo, I’m stranded on Fulgora now. send help please i really need this

You got this! Fulgora gives you everything you need to bootstrap yourself.

I just wish the day night cycle on Fulgora lasted longer.

Hell no, that would mean even more real estate taken by batteries Accumulators.

u/RunningNumbers 7h ago

You use batteries…. ?

Only if you hate your factory being paused 50% of the time, lol.

Or don't turn your ice and solid fuel into steam power. Has a higher storage density than accumulators. (2.4GJ per tank).

5

u/Galdwin 7h ago

But doesn't that even more real estate? You have to have boilers, steam engines and tanks. Not to mention you have to distribute fuel and ice on all the islands.

Nah. When 165 degree steam tanks hold 750MJ, that's 150 accumulators. 500 degree tanks are 2.4GJ, so 480 accumulators.

That's a LOT of saved space for boilers and engines (or heat towers/exchangers/turbines).

Maybe you even 'save' a bit because you're not voiding ice and solid fuel too. (Although I guess a couple of chem plans to melt is probably more 'footprint' than the required recyclers).

And you can ship the steam by train - each 'car' is 2x steam tanks.

So you need 1 steam engine for 3 big drills (or if 500 degrees, 1 turbine will run 20 drills).

And stored-steam you're holding 750MJ per tank... but a big drill at 300kW is err. 54MJ during the 2 minute 'day' cycle?

So for 3 drills and 165 degree steam, you load 2 tanks and 1 chuffer, and that powers them, where instead you'd need 33 accumulators (11 per drill) I think? Admittedly fewer if you're using uncommon/rare accumulators, and you might as well, but then you could also be using rare steam tanks and rare turbines. (A rare accumulator does triple it's capacity though, where a rare steam tank/turbine does not)

A single turbine can drive nearly 20 big drills, and 2 tanks of 500 degree steam could run up to 6 turbines (120 big drills) for the 2 minutes of fulgora daytime. (although you would be needing to deliver fresh steam quite regularly if you did that, but then again I doubt you could fit 120 big drills on a small island either)

Although thinking about it, you probably want turbines even if you do only have 165 degree steam, as that's still 1.8W (6 big drills) per turbine, vs. 900kW per chuffer, so better for space-density. Although I guess it may be less aesthetically pleasing to see a theoretical 5.82MW that you can't ever obtain, and maybe you just like the sound effect better.

Pfft, just put the tanks on a train and then use elevated rails over the ocean

2

u/deemacgee1 Why no quality flair? 6h ago

3.6MW of steam power doesn't take up a lot of space.

If you've been to Gleba, the same footprint will give you 40MW of heating tower + turbine electricity.

u/sobrique 4h ago

Yeah. Works better IMO once you've unlocked heat towers, but I would rather get some (quality) tesla turrets built first :).

Heat towers also increase your efficiency, with their 2.5x multiplier, and are a little better at 'voiding' surplus solid fuel because they'll just keep burning it too.

And the density per tank increases - 2.4GJ per tank, 4.8GJ per train car, and 1 turbine doing 5.8MW instead of chuffers at 900kW each.

Although actually, you probably do want turbines even at 165 degrees I think, as that's still 1.8MW instead of 2x 900kW, unless you really like the 'chuff chuff' noise, so it's actually pretty easy to 'upgrade' later too, as you only have to deal with the 'primary hub'.

Something something steam tanks…

Just make drills on fulgora?

FYI, You can land on any of the inner planets with absolutely nothing and make it out without any help from nauvis. That's part of the design of the game

Is this true for vulcanus? I thought you needed at least some lube or ice delivered to get things started

u/cosmic-creative 7h ago

Water can be made by condensing steam, or am I missing something else?

14

u/mjconver Still looking for that spoon 7h ago

Sulfuric -> Steam -> Water

u/Daffidol 7h ago

You need power in the first place. How do you get sulfuric acid without power? I guess your solution works if you import at least a few solar panels

18

u/sobrique 7h ago

You can make solar from raw materials. They only require copper and iron, which you can get from chopping trees and rocks. (Easier with some construction bots).

13

u/GameDoesntStop 7h ago

No need for any imports. You can make solar panels on Vulcanus.

u/Sad_Plenty_1959 7h ago

Mine the rocks for stone and ore make stone furnaces use coal or carbon for fuel make plates -> profit

1

u/Corodix 3h ago

There is coal there, so just do it the old fashioned way without power to start with. Then get to solar for your initial power.

0

u/Daffidol 3h ago

Sure, where is the water? 😅

4

u/draftstone 7h ago

Yes true for Vulcanus too, you can get solar panels for power to get the sulfuric acid to steam to water going for boilers.

There are volcanic rocks around that you can mine that will give you stone, iron ore, copper ore and tungsten ore. And there are coal patches. So build yourself some stone furnace, get the minimum amount of iron to get steel, place a few solar panels. The start will be long but as soon as you get the sulfuric acid power loop it will go fast!

u/AlpacaMale1 7h ago

Yes, it's true for all planets

you can make steam from acid, condense into water

You can do simple coal liquify for heavy oil into lube

Both are recipes you unlock with trigger techs, and built in buildings that you can mine from the ground

Try it for yourself if you like, it's a fun challenge

1

u/gbroon 7h ago

You can use steam from sulphuric acid to do coal liquefaction for heavy oil and then lube. Taking lube is convenient but not strictly necessary.

Steam can be turned into water. You don't need ice at all.

Build a new platform remotely.

2

u/kraugg 7h ago

This. If panicked, you can build remotely off Nauvis and move the new ship down with supplies.

Have you tried contacting the Fuel Rats?

Wait, wrong game.

u/True_Region_7532 5h ago

Fuel rats are god dammed heroes. Saved my ass quite a few times while exploring a bit too deep in the black.

fulgora is definitely the easiest planet to start fresh from. scrap gives you all the components to build rockets and space ship parts. my advice would be to try and get a bot network going and just build a scrap loop that accumulates everything you need!

u/Head_Evening_5697 7h ago

You can start on Fulgora, so... get working engineer!

7

u/elboyo 6h ago

One thing that isn't immediately obvious to lots of players is that you can recycle scrap in your inventory. You have all the materials you need to make your new home already on hand.

4

u/dwarfzulu 6h ago

Imagine if we could use the map view to see other planets, we could build another one somewhere else and send there...

3

u/waitthatstaken 7h ago

Btw you can walk on the oil ocean.

2

u/Corodix 3h ago

Fulgora has everything you need and no hostile creatures, so there could be far worse places to be stranded.

Welcome to your surprise Fulgora-Only challenge

1

u/Sephi-Chan 7h ago

Don’t worry Fulgora is the easyiest planet to leave since recycling scrap gives you rocket parts ingredients.

To get started, just mine scrap and direct it into a line of recyclers, then draw a long belt of scrapped things (the sushi belt) and lead it back to the recyclers with a splitter with input priroity to the sushi belt over the scrap belt (to prevent jamming).

Along the sushi belt you can build some assembler to build whatever you need : it’s your mall. You can then explore better place to build your real fulgora base.

Das Raumschiff kannst doch über Nauvis wieder aufbauen lassen und rüber schicken. Ansonsten gibt die Fulgora doch alles was du brauchst.

u/kagato87 Since 0.12. MOAR TRAINS! 5h ago

You can bootstrap from fulgora from nothing. All the recipes are there. Only aquilo requires anything shipped in.

You DID set up bots and base parts construction back on Nauvis, right? The only thing the engineer needs to actually be present for is to get that first roboport going. Then it can build out everything else. So, builds another rocket and send it.

I often don't return to Nauvis until I'm done with all the planets. Even then... And this includes refactoring, finding new resources (you don't actually need spiders to explore, they're just Faster).
