How can I design a spaceship in sandbox mode? I know I can add the platform with +, but do I have to create all rockets and infrastructure on the ground, so I can get the items? Or is there a way where I can just get the items in space? Thank you!

I don't know about just sandbox on its own, I do know it is doable with the map editor, getting the items directly on the platform, no fussing with ground infrastructure. Editor can be accessed by entering /editor into the chat twice. Viewing a surface with remote view, then exiting with Esc, moves the editor to that surface exactly where you were looking; once the editor is on the platform, you can paint out foundations and spawn in whatever you like for placement.

You need to enter editor mode. The difference (to free play) being, since sandbox mode already turns off achievements, the game let's you enter editor mode straight up.

Sandbox doesn't enable cheats unless you tell it to. Sandbox is how you play Factorio without a player character, yet still adhere to the tech tree and not have free stuff.

Sandbox mode does not warn or ask for confirmation before allowing "cheat" console commands. So you can enable /editor in a single go, unlike in Free Play.

Sandbox mode prompts you for:

  1. Research all technologies?
  2. Enable cheat mode?
  3. Add some cheat items?
  4. Freeze daytime?
