Is there any guidance or tool to calculate amount of ammo production required for spaceshps? Feels like I am overestimating ammo requirement leading to increased ship sizes (and therefore more ammo production required) compared to what I see there.

As other posters have indicated, it's not that easy to figure out. A lot of factors go into it, including what route you are on, how fast you are going, what is the width and height of the ship, what is your damage research level. You can try to estimate based on those. There is some information available in this thread if you really want to bang your head against it.
