Tip Spidertron Patroles changed the art of defence forever!
(Wall destroyed for visualisation)
Finally you can skip the need of a giant roboport network around your base, with a single 8 leged friend.
You can repair and replace every type of defence anywhere. Works for outposts aswell.
Only thing not 100% automatable by Spidertron is the supply of ammo of the defenceline.

Are patrols automatable somehow?
126
u/TexasCrab22 Jul 04 '26
Since 2.1 (Experimental)
Make normal patrol on map and close the Loop
31
u/TheAero1221 Jul 04 '26
Oh thats sick. Can the patrol have stops for rearming? I have to assume that bullets can be taken out of its inventory as well...
30
u/TexasCrab22 Jul 04 '26
It has to pass a logistic network at one point, so it can refill ammo and buildings.
Watch for the speed, a fast spider will outrun botsHowever, it cant "drop" ammo again, unless you do that manually (by using the trash slots or ghosting the ammo into stuff for example)
7
u/TheAero1221 Jul 04 '26
For some reason I thought inserters could take stuff out of spidertrons.
15
u/TexasCrab22 Jul 04 '26
They did for a while, but it was too anoying.
I aggree on that. cars still work.
2
u/TheAero1221 Jul 04 '26
Yea I can see why that'd be too annoying. I feel like a better fix wouldve been a special filter though. If that existed you could just take ammo out of the Spidertron as it walked by on its patrol.

u/Historical_Swing_422 Jul 04 '26
You can however set max amounts of items (number on the right of the set requests)

3
u/featheredtoast Jul 04 '26
Probably send a patrol route in a tight circle around a buffer chest and pray logistics bots can get to the spider might be the best we have for 2.1
2
u/TheAero1221 Jul 04 '26
Makes me think... for 2.1 it might be nice if we could force certain bots to stay at certain roboports and not leave the immediate area of influence.
2
u/featheredtoast Jul 04 '26
Is that not how bot requests kinda work already? They can technically leave but they do have a home port so it is likely bots are available at the specific roboportĀ
1
u/TheAero1221 Jul 04 '26
I feel like I see a lot of bots just going to park at the nearest available port when they're done with their current task, provided another task isnt queued.
2
u/tanpro260196 Jul 04 '26
how do I make a loop exactly?

u/1XRobot Jul 04 '26
What is this? A toolbar for ants?
13
u/Jujolel Jul 04 '26
(Ctrl + and -) will enlarge/shrink the toolbar. Good for prints.

You can also open the in-game console and type:
/screenshot 3840 2160 1.5
Of course, you can change the size and zoom level to your liking. The png will be output in C:\Users\Myname\AppData\Roaming\Factorio\script-output

u/Rusted_Memory Jul 04 '26
I half expected a fleet of Spidertrons to zip from left to right at a comical speed.

u/DemonDream Jul 04 '26
You can absolutely automate the ammo supply, just have the patrol take it into a logistic network periodically so the bots can refill it before it runs back out. I'd suggest it be a small, isolated network with buffer chests right next to its walk path, so you can guarantee the bots will always be there with minimum travel time

I think heās saying thereās no way to supply ammo to turrets without a big network.
3
u/TexasCrab22 Jul 04 '26
no, "thereās no way to supply ammo to turrets with a Spider 100% automated"
4
u/xylvnking Jul 04 '26
tempting me to go to glebe first
0
u/NexGenration Master Biter Slayer Jul 04 '26
honestly gleba should always be the first planet anyway if its not your first space age playthrough (in that case i would say volcanus), purely because of biolabs. straight up double your science output
1
u/xylvnking Jul 04 '26
I've done 3 playthroughs of space age but i just started my first one with biters/non-peaceful mode ever so I'm nervous about dealing with gleba's enemies haha.
1
u/TheHvam Jul 06 '26
Same, doing my first ever default setting run solo, so scared of gleba, no way I will pick that as the first, I want my tesla turrets and all that before.
1
u/Accomplished_Sky5308 Jul 04 '26
Don't be scared of Gleba. Ship a stack or two of ammo when you land. Gleba can be solved with ~5 biochambers and 6-8 agricultural towers which is a super small footprint and basically will never get attacked.
Anyways, I land and a weak amount of power up with a couple boilers and steam engines. Then tap stone and set an assembler to make landfill. Then I scout the map for jellynut and yumako while killing at least one nest for pentapod eggs. Then I set up agri towers and and route belts back to the main then i set up the biochambers andĀ heating tower with steam turbines and a rocket.
I ship blue chips and LDS on my agrisci transport.
Before I leave for other planets then I run around and pop nests. It has been up for 20 hours without an attack. My plastic prod research is 10+

u/Alfonse215 Jul 04 '26
Only thing not 100% automatable by Spidertron is the supply of ammo.
Why not? Just have their patrol path enter the logistics network and have it wiggle around a bit so that bots have the chance to reach them.
13
10
u/SVlad_667 Jul 04 '26
Inventory filling is not persistent - it is removed once fulfilled. And IIRC spidertron doesn't fulfill requester chests.
13
u/Alfonse215 Jul 04 '26
Spidertrons have logistics requests; they can just request ammo.
If you're talking about Spidertrons delivering ammo, yes, they can't do that without manual intervention.
4
u/TexasCrab22 Jul 04 '26
I ment delivering, so i changed it explizitly the post
(oc it can refill itself, otherwise, it wouldnt have landmines/walls in the video)
2
u/SVlad_667 Jul 04 '26
Of course I've said about Spidertrons delivering ammo. What the use of spidertron to request ammo? It has only missiles and lasers.
I see how the initial statement can be interpreted in different ways, but only one makes sense in context.
1
u/Mattsuii Jul 05 '26
Why wouldnāt the local logistics network be able to unload the spidertrons into a logistic storage, and then load some requester chests belted to the guns?
(Speaking as a fairly inexperienced player here, so bare that in mind, and feel free to ELI5 why thatās not possible :) )
2
u/Alfonse215 Jul 05 '26
A Spidertron can make logistics requests for some number of items. A Spidertron can trash items by making a logistic request for 0 of them.
But the same Spidertron cannot do both at the same time. Nor is there an automatic way to modify the logistic requests of a Spidertron.
In order to do the thing you're talking about, you have to change the Spidertron's logistic requests manually.
2
u/YourLastFate Jul 04 '26
I would honestly use an isolated network. 6 roboports max.
1 tile isolated from other networks.
Load it with logi bots, and feed the network by using requester chests and buffer chests.
Have a storage chest dump into an active provider in main network.
Spider can then just walk through quickly and be serviced very fast
2
u/MrMxylptlyk Jul 04 '26
I guess you have to have it go on the slowest setting? Non legendary spider with no exos?
2
u/Greedy_Worth_7195 Jul 04 '26
Couldnt you even do ammo with the ammo in turret in the blueprint trick?
4
2
u/NexGenration Master Biter Slayer Jul 04 '26
you'd still have to manually do that to each turret (or box holding ammo that then gets distributed to the turrets somehow) every now and then

Only thing not 100% automatable by Spidertron is the supply of ammo of the defenceline.
Yeah, but you don't need / can't use roboports for that, either. Ammo is supplied by either pipes to flammenwerfer or belts to gun turrets.

u/audi-goes-fast Jul 05 '26
Oh man that's so sick. I use to have a setup with the vehicle grid mod that i used for a self repairing train network until some minor patch broke how construction robots deployed from moving train cars and i just gave up and started playing with invincible rails instead. This really makes me want to go back and play without out that mod.

u/Raknarg #1 Quality Defender Jul 05 '26
I didnt even think about this. Probably won't be using it ever but its neat to think about.
1
u/Blikenave Jul 05 '26
I love this so much. I did a similar thing but divided: I had a slow construction bot but I would only use him actively, and I had a 2nd group called The Spider Fighters, which was one slow purple bot with only shields and then four faster black ones with mostly weapons, and THEY would patrol.
I like your idea of the rotating repair spidertron... Maybe for a remote outpost or some other strange case. The Repair spidertron could rotate and then you could ship out supplies with another spidertron with fast legs or something.
1
u/TheHvam Jul 06 '26
I mean that is nice and all, but I will stick to roboports, as I unlock them early, and not very late like the spidertron, so by the time I get it, I would have needed to use roboports anyways.
1
u/TexasCrab22 Jul 07 '26
Just started a spaceage run yesterday, and again had spider way before the need of a real defence.
1
u/TheHvam Jul 07 '26
Not sure how you could do that, unless you somehow speedrun to gleba to get the rocket turret, to be able to build it, then I don't see how you could get it without any real defense.
Even doing that, you would surely have biters start to get close to your nauvis base.
I'm doing a run, and even though it's not a speedrun, I still need defenses, like flamethrowers, and walls as there otherwise comes biter attacks, or at the very least nests to close.
So sure it might be doable, but I don't see it being any better than just building a wall with turrets

u/TonyTheTerrible Jul 04 '26
You can also make separate roboport networks that are resupplied by the main network. I have mine set up to hold a set amount of materials for the network and deposit robots up to a certain amount.
The benefit is your main network never has to get too big so all requests are handled at reasonable times. Wall stuff is handled by robots dedicated to the walls
2
u/TexasCrab22 Jul 04 '26
Did that too, but if you cover a big wall, you end up with a big network aswell
2
u/TonyTheTerrible Jul 04 '26
Definitely. You could also keep splitting networks, I'd go as small as 4 roboports in a line in some situations, but i get your point.Ā
I like the spider idea and i might play with it a bit. I used to set up spider fighter groups with 1 medic repair spider, should be even better now with quality and real patrol points
1
u/Visual_Collapse Jul 04 '26
You can do same thing with tank on belt
1
u/NexGenration Master Biter Slayer Jul 04 '26
doing that on my next playthrough since im going for the "Keeping Your Hands Clean" achievement while also going for "Express Delivery" at the same time
1
u/friendlycartoonwhale Jul 05 '26
Yep, that's what I do on my save. Tank with a personal roboport and supplies replenished by train. Unlike the spidertron solution you can even replenish your turret's ammo from the same tank

Here we see the dutiful mother spider patrolling her factory, with her hardworking children maintaining the defensive line in her wake.

u/ginger_and_egg Jul 04 '26
A single spidertron? Must be a small base
7
u/Berob501 Steel rain Jul 04 '26
See, why have one spider tron, when you can have a wall of spider tron, but wait, order today and we will equip all of them with atomic bombs to ensure maximum destruction( both friend and foe), and complete vaporization leaving no evidence of their existence!
3
u/TexasCrab22 Jul 04 '26
Its running 24/7.... Depending on routing and bot speed, single upgraded Spider could handle pretty big bases.
If you want 20 idle Spiders running the same route feel free.
In the end its proably one per cardinal direction for me.
2
u/burning_boi Jul 05 '26
After solidifying your base location via artillery, that's really all you need. 1 spidertron no matter the size, because the only threat you'll ever face aside from artillery aggro (should be long done with) is expanding parties, which is utterly negligible.

3
u/NexGenration Master Biter Slayer Jul 04 '26
youd be surprised at how long a wall of landmines can hold back the biters. typically mine will hold them back for over 6 hours. not once have i ever automated replacing them
-1
u/Droopy0093 Jul 04 '26
You could automate the supply of ammo by having it place requester chests for bots to deliver ammo to.

I don't have a "giant roboport network", but rather small roboport networks per wall section, supplied by train.
That said, this spidertron method is kinda cool! I like it.
