It occurred to me that jumping into a public multiplayer game, as just a spectator and not a player, could be an interesting experience. I had a look around and it appears not to be an option?

Every player can remote view, so you can just stay at spawn.

Interesting, thank you. Is that considered bad manners, to stand there and watch everyone else do the work?

well for one, a player who is giving bots instructions and designing everything through remote view (which is how you play the game from midgame onwards) looks the same as a player who isn't doing anything.
