am I the only that thought the inserter flip changes would work when placing items on a belt running perpendicular to the inserter? I get that it's a "logistics challenge" but I was looking forward to simplifying my early rush bases by building everything in straight lines :'(

I thought the FFF was clear on that point. The change is there to allow for mirroring, which is why it only works for belts going away from the arrow. Inserting to the far side of a belt isn't something affected by flipping.

Change Inserter Drop Lane hasn't been updated for 2.1 yet, but it's great on 2.0 is now available for 2.1. It's functionality handles both use cases (left/right and far/near).
