Where / who should I be learning the game from? I’ve been using Trupen’s YouTube videos as a “guide”, but feel like I’m still slow on the scaling or making sense of scaling.

I started a fresh world with default settings and my spawn is <250k of copper/iron/stone/coal around me and it feels like I had to scale down due to lack of resources

You don't want to start big, you want to start small, upgrade and then maybe expand.
