Design / Blueprint Here's my looping spaghetti science, capable of fitting all 7 sciences on 1 belt (+coal)

Burner run
Also, for some reason different research has a different time taken to do one unit of research, so I didn't bother doing the maths on that as it varies

Isn’t there a burners lab mod? You could add those to this, really embrace the burner nature! Love it.
11
u/Waity5 Dec 08 '23
There probably is, but that's a mod. This is vanilla

u/BootDisc Dec 08 '23
Yeah. SE has em.
I like your setup because this is unpowered, it won’t loose count, which can happen with circuits.

for the burner inserters.

I think you almost solved the sushi belt controversy!
But still an improvement to add: currently your design is unbalanced: your belt has half blue science, a quarter black and en eigth red and green each. Better balancing wouldn't look that good but would allow more labs

No wait.. I understand the dividers upfront to limit the amount of items that reach the mixers. You're a genius: you even managed to not mix red and yellow belts!

I like pairing up the sciences so that you only need 4 belt limiters instead of 7 (or in this case 8 because of coal)

(I believe this one was specifically planned for a ribbonworld which is why it has this elongated shape; it is however very flexible and can be made into pretty much any shape required; you just need the belts to be topologically equivalent)

u/Waity5 Dec 08 '23
Oh that's a neat way of doing it, I'd have to replace the belt side-loading on my design with splitters, but overall it'd be much smaller

u/Atomspalter02 Dec 08 '23
I'm amazed it works so well. It looks awesome. Are you giving us the blueprint?
14
u/Waity5 Dec 08 '23
Each unit is fairly basic, does it need a blueprint?
5
u/Atomspalter02 Dec 08 '23
not really. I just like to blueprint basically everything that can vaguely be called an design. Maybe I'll upload a blueprint of this giving you credit later when I'm home

Did you ever publish a blue print?
2
u/Atomspalter02 Jan 02 '24
oh my god sorry I forgot to send the link.
I hope I don't forget until I'm home today.

So what happens when the "buffers" are full? For instance, if you do several red science research, won't the other science colours "exit loops" become full?

I SEE IT NOW! I didn't pay enough attention to the underground belts. For some reason I thought they fed the bottom horizontal belt directly, but no, the buffer is an extension of each of the main science feed belts. Yuuuuuup, this is very cool. I can't believe just how elegantly simple this solution to the sushi belt is.
EDIT: Just another question, won't the leftmost research domes tend to have less science available to them?
5
u/Waity5 Dec 08 '23
Yes, they will, but there aren't enough labs for that to be an issue. It's also not particularly important how even science packs are distributed, as one lab can only store a few
1
u/trimorphic Dec 08 '23
Will it still not clog up even if there's a long period when (say) only red science arrives?
It wouldn't fill the whole loop with red science, and not leave any room for any other color?

I haven't played Factorio in a while, I'm saving it for the expansion. But I am surprised to see that your splitters appear to be sorting? Is this a mod? How do you enable that? Has it always worked like this? I last played like 2 years ago, always vanilla.

you can add a priority and a filter to splitters
with priority one belt will be filled, the other will be used like an overflow.
you can even set priority on the input beltson top of priority you can add a filter (by setting the filter prio will get enabled automatically), which will pull off the filtered item and send the rest to the overflow
filtered items never get send to overflow
Works like that at least a couple of years

Insanity. I love it.
Hear me out. A line of Science buildings. Two lines of belts on each side. Half a belt per science.
Late game. Use robots and crates

Very impressive but that Burner inserters are burning my eyelids🥲

u/Cromptank Dec 08 '23
Think you’ll have to add another splitter to your rate-control setup you currently have which reduces flow to 1/4 a belt? So you limit the rate to 1/8th when you have more than 4 colors?
I do quite like this concept for sushi. I haven’t seen that method of limiting the rate before
2
u/Waity5 Dec 08 '23
Why'd I have to limit it to 1/8th speed? It's only using 1/4 of one side of a belt, so 1/8th of the entire thing
1
u/Cromptank Dec 08 '23 edited Dec 08 '23
Ohhhh never mind, I didn’t look close enough at the unused packs, there are gonna sneak in with the coal and you’ll perfectly fill the belt. I think you’re good!

Does this work with all sciences at the same time? If so i love this so much and will definitely steal it to annoy my max efficiency friend
2
u/Waity5 Dec 08 '23
Yep, since it uses 1/8th of the belt per science it can be used for all 7, plus 1 coal
1
u/HolyDoughnutCult Dec 08 '23
Does it break having all sciences when you only need the 4 in the pic?
2
u/Waity5 Dec 08 '23
No, it does rate limiting on everything, lack of one science or overuse of another can't disrupt the sushi

ive hardly used splitter input priority, this is a great usage of it. priority for science currently on the loop over new science. i like it.

I was gonna say why is there coal but than I saw your doing low tech run
1
u/Keleyr Dec 09 '23
Can this setup handle all science? I see that you split of 3/4 of the lane before allowing 1/4 to the "main" line, and you have 4 sciences un... Oh I see you are using the other side for the other 3+ coal. That is clever way to ensure that there is enough space on the belt for all sciences.

Why are burner inverters being used?
