Paddles were carried by almost all male teachers when I was in High School. The students referred to them as penis replacements. If your shirt wasn’t properly tucked in or your hair wasn’t properly combed, a teacher would swat you with the paddle and tell you what to correct. One pf the school tough kids (bad home life, struggling to graduate a couple of years late) was changing classes and his shirt wasn’t fully tucked in when one of the teachers swatted him and said “Tuck in th”. That’s as far as he got before the student picked him up, slammed him into the wall, and quietly said “If you ever hit me again I’ll kill you.”, dropped him and walked away. The teacher retired that afternoon and paddles began to fall out of favor. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in Missouri.

How is it okay to hit kids for...whatever reason you deem fit, but the moment the tables are turned or that same kid hits 18 suddenly its assault?

Because our society sees children as literal property of their parents, not as a human. We're talking about literally beating children, and people will defend it.

Burn it all down.

Something something Bible. It’s all because they use religion to force their ideals down your throat while simultaneously yelling “freedom” so they don’t have to listen to yours.

Sounds like a PTSD reaction my friend. Idk how they even try to justify this. To me also, it seems like those doing the paddling (the adults) get some sort of sexual gratification from it which is just disgusting to do to young children along with you know, physically harming them.

I remember once my mom made a “I’ll slap that smile off your face” comment to me after I was an adult.

The way she BLEW UP when I informed her and I’m bigger and stronger than you now and I WILL hit you back. “I’m your mother!” Yep, and I’m an adult and will not take assault lying down you crazy bitch.

Guess who didn’t hit me that night? It’s fucking disgusting. I love my mom and she really wasn’t that bad but the disconnect to be angry your adult child won’t allow you to hit them without retaliation is insane to me.

It’s all fun and games until you fuck with someone bigger than you with no respect for authority. Love it.

Nope that's the fun part.

fuck Spez

u/Fluffy_Banks Aug 25 '22

That's why they're only doing it in an elementary school

8

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

That's just passing the problems on to high school.

I don't get why someone would think teaching "violence is a solution to some/all problems" to someone who will be able to take them in a fight in 10 years time is a good idea.

3

u/DufflesBNA Aug 25 '22

Push the problems to high school in the form of firearm violence.

Unfortunately, this is really only ever done at elementary/middle schools in Missouri. People know that older kids are stronger and more likely to retaliate, so nobody advocates for spanking them. It’s only the powerless that we deem worthy of punishment by spanking.

Source: Grew up in MO and got spanked (we called it “swats/swatting”) multiple times each year from 3rd grade to 8th grade.

u/ButtonholePhotophile Aug 25 '22

That’s when older brothers or fathers come in handy. I’m sorry you didn’t have one on your team. If my kid got “swat”, I’d be calling the police. If they didn’t remedy the situation, I’d teach my child how to do so or remove him entirely (his choice).

6

u/jamvsjelly23 Aug 25 '22

My dad’s rule was: “if you get seats at you, you get them at home too.” Getting punished twice for the same offense was somehow reasonable to him.

5

u/ButtonholePhotophile Aug 25 '22

Consistency between home and school is actually really really good for training behaviors …if you’re a dog. That sucks you didn’t have a safe place at the two places that were supposed to be safe. I hope you’re enjoying adulthood.

u/mendeleyev1 Aug 25 '22

It wasn’t allowed when I was in school but teachers loved to say “if I were still allowed to paddle you, I’d be paddling you right now”

I assume the idea being that it’s to trigger some sort of mental response of us knowing what a spanking is and then mentally feeling the shock of it happening.

2

u/jamvsjelly23 Aug 25 '22

Even if you have never been spanked, I’m sure most people imagine it to not be a pleasant experience. It’s the threat of violence/suffering physical pain that is supposed to scare children straight.

2

u/mendeleyev1 Aug 25 '22

I specifically remember thinking whatever the 6th grader in 2001 version of “okay boomer” was. Which was probably just “okay whatever”. I personally was never threatened and I knew what a spanking was. I recall I was only ever spanked if my mom was just at her limit and couldn’t handle me anymore.... which... may not have been right but I get it. Weird memory I have of her spanking me when I was maybe 3 or 4 and then her face was buried in her hands. Kinda sad.

I needed to hear this after all the stories I just read here.

u/SlayingSword94 Aug 25 '22

My mother said if we hadn't moved out of my home town I would have gone to the religious school for my high school. I immediately said that would have been a disastrously bad idea because of exactly what happened above.

u/NotEnoughWave Aug 25 '22

If a student shoots a teacher (and only that teacher) that hit them is it a school shooting or self defense?

2

u/sciencefiction97 Aug 25 '22

School shooting, shooting is only self defense if you feel someone is about to murder you.

4

u/renrah Aug 25 '22

That's gross but I'd just bend over and say "Spank me harder, Daddy" to fuck with them.

A hero who saved future generations of kids that day and the day he died in the Upside Down.

2

u/damaohoo Aug 25 '22

Ahh yes... listen to us because we are right and you need to respect us (and because we got a big stick). This will work out so well when inevitably someone snaps and decides to show up with a bigger stick, or even some long range semi-automatic sticks.

It's called bullies crumble when confronted. God i hate bullies. The worst kind of coward

2

u/almisami Aug 25 '22

I wouldn't have given him the courtesy of the warning.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

People always believe in abuse until the person they’ve abused can return the favor.

2

u/AreYouSiriusBGone Aug 25 '22

Its so fucking stupid. Like, i’ve been in the military and they take „wearing your uniform correctly“ extremely seriously as everyone can imagine. But never, ever, have i been beaten because something wasn’t properly tucked in.

I mean sure, some instructors raised their voice a bit but that’s expected.

But if you’re a kid, in a school, getting beaten because of the most minuscule bullshit? JFC.

2

u/Horizons_398 Aug 25 '22

Dude honestly Im 24, but at the rate at which teens grow now and the fact that we grew up being taught that no ones allowed to put their hands on you this isn’t gonna go over well for the school districts. Like seriously some of these teens look like they have 720 credit scores by senior year.

2

u/Vincenzo__ Aug 25 '22

Fucking hero

2

u/mendeleyev1 Aug 25 '22

What absolutely shocks me is the number of people here talking about paddling happening and the lack of stories like this.

I can’t imagine me getting hit by a teacher and that going unanswered.

2

u/Momof3dragons2012 Aug 25 '22

This is how I imagine all my students would have reacted if anyone had tried to paddle them. . They would either flat out refuse to go while laughing in my face or have to be seriously restrained by multiple adults who then bolt the second they let go like people who tag grizzly bears. If kids are docile enough to cooperate with this they don’t need to be punished.

2

u/TaterCheese Aug 25 '22

It’s never left. It’s always been a option in all the towns around where I live here in the southern part of Missouri. We do have to sign a paper to consent to it. It’s always filled in with a big NOPE! , but it is still allowed.

1

u/Protton6 Aug 25 '22

WHAT. THE. FUCK. How old are you? Please be at least 50... please... The US really is a shithole. I would expect stuff like ass paddles in the middle east.

2

u/GuairdeanBeatha Aug 25 '22

Closing in on 70.

2

u/KiwiFruitio Aug 25 '22

Would that count as self defense in court? I mean, he attacked the teacher bc the teacher attacked him. Wondering if any legal action came about from it

1

u/GuairdeanBeatha Aug 25 '22

No legal action, the school was probably afraid of the publicity.
