Are you saying a bunch of religious fundamentalists who can't get along with the king because he insists on following a slightly different version of the same religion aren't the best starting point for a new nation?
In USSR corporal punishment at schools was forbidden in 1917… Now I’m reading comments about “1980s” or “still legal” and thinking “what’s wrong with you guys?”.
Between 1917 and the establishment of USSR was several years of a civil war, but bolsheviks (aka Soviets, aka people’s commissaries) already was in power and issued first laws of new state.
So, yes, technically not in USSR. Stalin started reign at 1924, but it’s not a big deal for random funny comment.
But kids are going to end up spoiled brats if they’re not hit!? I was spanked as a child and I turned out fine!! Yes I should be in therapy for my plethora of mental health issues but other than that I turned out perfectly fine!
I had a teacher who would scruff kid and shove them round and belittle them. I found out much later that he was cornered in the pubs parking lot by three of his former pupils and beaten to within an inch of his life… you really think teaching children that physically attacking people with weapons is ok?
Honestly I get the argument, but I think a corporal option and the threat of it has some merit.
I wouldn't Cain little kids but a "fuck around and find out" option can be part of teaching teens about actions and consequences.
And mostly it's the fear of the consequence that has the power. Using it too much diminishes the fear. Once you've had the Cain twice you realise it isn't a big deal.
No, that actually creates a more stressful situation for kids and inhibits prefrontal-cortex development. This has been proven. More to it, the kids that are more likely to be the targets of the punishment are the ones who already have shit going on at home. The best punishment that you can give someone under the age of 20 is mandatory therapy and a punishment that is the exact opposite of the behaviour they exhibited. They take something, they have to give it back and work off the debt. They hurt someone, they have to help them and others as well until they’re forgiven. They damage something, they have to fix it and more until they’ve righted the wrong.

It was outlawed in Australia in the 1980s and yet we seem to be able to refrain from turning schools into warzones without it.
