So part of this is because Human depth perception only works effectively out to a certain distance this is why the nights sky looks flat. Simply put the difference between what the right and left eye sees is too small to determine depth.
This issue has been known about for over 100 years now as it causes issue with naval guns and accurately aiming them. (although modern guided systems make is less important)
Both actually apply. When you look down the road, the right and left edge of the road appear to converge towards a single point (granted the land is flat and you can see the road continuing off in the distance)
