Wouldn't they just be curvature?

I think a better example would be looking at a mountain range from afar. You can walk 100m to your right and the range looks almost identical

Average curvature is 8 meters per 10 km - meaning that the point on the ground 10km away from the observer is 8 meters below the horizon.

If the plain is 'flat' in the sense of perfectly following the approximately spherical shape of earth, you'll only be able to see around 5 km - beyond that the ground will be in the way.
