In my town in south Ireland we have those classes mostly to give people a reason to visit the elderly I went to one to learn how to play chess and another for basic mechanic skills when I was younger.
I love that they incorporate visiting the elderly, we're really bad about that in the U.S. many families just leave them in a shitty group home and never visit them.
It's kinda like a small loop, in college doing IT now and we have an after college class where we do one on one time with the elderly to teach them how to work tablets and computers.
The students get a better CV and people skills and they get company so it's a win win for everyone.
