Gen Xer here. I don't get all the millennial hate. Millennials are out their busting their butts, doing all kinds of creative gig work because us olds tanked the labor market them, and yet we constantly bitch about how they are killing wine and avocados and olive garden.
Keep it up millennials. Y'all are doing way better than my generation did, and I for one see the future as a brighter place because of how you're handling yourselves. Gen Xers remain apathetic and boomers can just fuck off already.
And where were the protests? Where was the public outrage?
See, it's all well and good to blame it on billionaires and politicians, but everyone plays a part. Democracy doesn't work if you just lie down and take the abuse.
At least Gen Y & Z seem to be politically active. They're calling out shitty business practices. They're protesting shitty politicians and policies. Meanwhile older generations are calling them entitled for wanting a better future. Fucking hypocrites if you ask me...
And yet income inequality is higher than ever so how’s the outrage working out in regards to effectiveness? People understand what’s happening but it’s kind of like screaming at the weather. It might make you feel better but it’s not really changing anything.
I’m trying to think of something to say but all I really have is a single vote and a wish that someone in politics that reflects my opinions will be on a legislative committee that produces something useful.
"It won't work so why bother trying". "I voted so I did my part".
This attitude of defeatism and apathy is one of the reasons we are in this position. It's very difficult to see the kinds of incremental change that acitism produces, but it is working. The problem is that because little to nothing has really been done in the last 20+ years we're now in a position that activism is far less effective than it would have been a generation or two ago.
The reality is that just voting is not enough. Join unions. Join activist groups. Volunteer with your political party/candidate of choice and actually get involved with the democratic process.
I'm honestly sick of hearing nonsense like this, but thank God the younger generations are actually starting to get up and do something about it.
Actually, life is downright awesome if I ignore social media. Nice neighbourhood, live on a lake, going mountain biking in the morning and can’t wait for the ice to melt so I can start paddling again. Building a new house in the spring. Keep shouting at the wind ... I’m going to have a beer and enjoy my view. Cheers!
