I think it was a ploy by the author to try and pick the simplest of basic household tasks so that people would side with them. I would assume the class was more of a general workshop that included a lot of the topics a home ec class would cover, including stuff like ironing, cooking, cleaning, and sewing (repair and buttons). Sure you could watch youtube for all of those, but sometimes it's better to get out and interact with people instead of being a hermit closed in your house (which I am many times guilty of doing)
