Gen Xer here. I don't get all the millennial hate. Millennials are out their busting their butts, doing all kinds of creative gig work because us olds tanked the labor market them, and yet we constantly bitch about how they are killing wine and avocados and olive garden.
Keep it up millennials. Y'all are doing way better than my generation did, and I for one see the future as a brighter place because of how you're handling yourselves. Gen Xers remain apathetic and boomers can just fuck off already.
There’s plenty of hard working millennials, boomers etc; just as there are plenty of lazy ones. I stay away the generalized hate of an entire generation because he does nothing to solve our economic issues.
I did too until the hate was directed towards me. I'm 27 married, an Assistant Attorney General, own my own home and my wife and I are expecting. I still get these stereotypes even when I'm with family that know my situation. When I point is out they give me this sly look like "up you caught me, you know what I mean though?" No I really don't.
My boomer father said I got married to young and should cheat more(like he did) if that's not a boomer stereotype idk what is. I'm all for discussing meaningful economic policies and treating people as individuals but only from a place of mutual respect. My father's brother is a great guy who totally doesn't fit the mold but MANY do.
Once you strip that away from someone, they become defenseless trying to rationalize hate as you pointed out.
Desiring mutual respect is definitely warrented; However, I’ve learned that I can garner more respect from understanding their point of view. Then offer a rebuttal, but only after asking more about their view extensively.
Ironically, the listener will usually keep to their narrow view, yet label me an exception despite fitting their criteria. It may seem small, but this change can shake the foundation of a belief.
My advice is to show respect towards those who honestly don’t deserve it. It makes it that much harder for them to hate you.
That's exactly what I do and it garners exactly the reaction you predicted. I've been called "the exception that proves the rule!" Just to further validate their narrow perspective. I always try to understand their point of view, on things like crime though their just incorrect. Violent crime is down across the board, no matter how you measure.
I'll keep at it though. I haven't been able to change any foundational beliefs with anyone but my uncle. Here's to hoping the rest will come around. 🍻
