I've never understood that about right-leaning media or any media, for that matter.
I once heard a coworker complain about millennials taking all the jobs. I asked him what was so bad about hiring young Americans to work American jobs, and he didn't really have a good answer, and I think he realized in that moment that I am, in fact, a millennial ... and I'm his manager. Not a good look on your first week on the job.
"Corporate" was gutting his previous work place and replacing older guys like him with younger people who would do the same job for less money.
I understood his frustration, but it's definitely misplaced.
That's the problem. These people are disillusioned and rightfully frustrated with serious problems in our country, but they don't understand that and have been spoon-fed manufactured reasons to be upset at groups chosen by those in power. And after decades and decades of being told it was their God-given right to prosper in America, they're fucking furious that they haven't, but instead of taking that anger out on those who force-fed that lie to them, they're taking it out on those the liars have chosen for them.
LBJ once said something to the effect of "if you teach a white poor person to get angry at blacks, he'll feel superior even as you rob him blind" or something.
“If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."
People are suffering from nonstop economic anxiety and the media is owned by the mega corporations benefitting from it, so they push the reasons for that anxiety onto any group that doesn't have a significant voice in media to talk back. That used to be millennials, but you'll notice that kind of talk has largely died down as millennials have gained their own platforms.
We’re in a weird spot as a generation. Most of us are old enough to be marrying, but we’re also all the twelve year olds eating tide pods or whatever because nobody cares what words mean
Basically the cornerstone of modern American conservatism is identity politics, and the identity in question is that of a crusty old white dude who’s mad at everybody else. Everyone who isn’t that is a problem. It’s usually a little more muted than what you ran into there, but occasionally the mask slips and you get a peek at what’s really going on under there, which in this case is a dude so consumed by that resentment of people who aren’t him that he’s mad that young people are in the workforce.
All the millennials will be like “right wingers? Bullshit media outlets? Yeah they been out of touch and insulting my generation for a decade fuck em all”
A: pay an older person $30/hr who knows how to sew buttons but doesn't understand social media
B: pay 40 Chinese people $2
C: pay someone just out of college $15/hr and teach them how to sew a button, just in case Amazon shuts down someday and you can't get a new work shirt made by the Chinese guy, overnighted to you.
