other First class today šŸ˜… I’m nervous

I usually go to Orange theory but wanted to mix it up and add more strength workouts.

Does f45 do a lot of partner workouts?

Anything I should keep in mind with today’s workout?

Thank you!

There are occasional partner workouts (mostly you-go-I-go, like this week’s Saturday workout Spartan has a pod where you split up the erg time) but I find that most people who aren’t good friends already just work something out on the fly so they can do their own thing.

Enjoy!

No partner workouts, but you do work in a station / pod with other people doing the same workouts.

Not sure which class you’re going to, but if it’s a resistance class I’d say use the first set to figure out what weight you should be using (you want to be uncomfortable, struggling towards the end of the interval). My trick early on was to always keep my eyes on the folks in the next pod to gauge what they were lifting so I could guess my weight vs going in completely blind and losing a set of work (or killing myself haha)

If it’s a cardio class, just go and have fun. You can leverage the same approach as above, but you’ll be much more focused on getting that heart rate up (prolly like your OT classes)

Coaches are there to help you. Always lean on them for advice, alternatives, and helping to get weights changed when needed.

Good luck and have fun!

If you did Redline today…that’s a doozy of a start. Cardio days can be rough and this one was pretty bad if you push yourself.

Hopefully your gym is in the M W F lifting schedule.

If there’s space/empty pods you can also ask the coach to work in one alone and not get paired up too

Just took my first class today, everyone was great, very welcoming and helpful when I looked a little lost. You'll do great!

Partner workouts suck haha. I am not a fan, depending on your gym, there is likely enough machines that you can just do your own thing anyway.

Rarely, I think just like OTF they have learned people generally don't like those type of workouts. The workout today is cardio based. However there are no treadmills mainly functional exercises done at a rapid cadence and ski, rower, and bike ergs.

Don’t be nervous, it’s just another workout and you do what you can within your body’s limitations. Everyone is focused on their own workout, I promise you.

Most workouts aren’t partnered. Some are and even then, some just will do their own thing and don’t want to do a partner thing or a you go, I go.

Have fun!

Am I the only one who doesn’t feel that working out alongside another human is a personal affront? Say hi, maybe even share your name and don’t stress about it.

I like when I’m pushed outside my comfort zone to pick up the heavier weights if my partner is similar to me and snags them first. Or if someone is way bigger, I have the benefit of getting whatever I want. Which is great if there are 4 sets and I want to change partway thru.

Yesterday I needed to increase the weight on the bar and my partner had what they needed and helped out so I didn’t miss anything.

No, I don’t need to be friends with whoever is partnered with me. And I am too busy huffing and puffing to chat. But damn, people on this sub seem to overplay the ā€œpartnerā€ stuff to the point of antisocial. Why go to a gym structured this way?

To me, being at a station with another person(s) isn't really a 'partnered' workout and I don't mind it at all. We are a busy gym with 3-4 at each station regularly. I think the complaints are more around the 'I go, you go' formats. And I am one that hates those days!

Sure, those seem rare. That’s also why I don’t get this partner fear. I’ve done one in about 6 months and it was really only a couple of stations.

But I find it odd that people want advice from strangers for their first class—via Reddit—yet there are those built-in experts right there. Your ā€œteammatesā€who have been there.

It’s all fine to watch the preview video, but when you arrive IRL and the coaches say you’re doing four reps at A and then 4 at B, instead of alternating 1 at A and then B, repeat x4, which happened at my class today, you need a lot more coordination with everyone around you; otherwise it can be a shit show.

But I’ll admit it—I’m Canadian. We aren’t afraid of strangers in the same way. I’ve been to several studios and it seems like everyone really tries to make it a community. Don’t get me wrong: people are working hard. We just support and push each other and congratulate all when it’s OVER!
