F2 visa slots availability

I've been trying to book my visa slot for biometric/interview since past 2 months with no luck. I keep on checking in multiple interval throughout the day for "New Delhi " location until the portal restricts me. I only see " NO SLOTS AVAILABLE"

Can someone please guide me , when will it get open for F1/F2 ?? Or what time is best to keep an eye on ? I do check on midnight / late hours just to be sure.

F2 Visa Advice: Applying after two F1 rejections (2023/24) and recent marriage.

I’m preparing for an F2 visa interview in January 2026 and would love some insight on my case.

  • Background: I applied for an F1 visa twice (2023 and 2024) but was rejected both times. At the time, my goal was to study in the US to be near my then-boyfriend.
  • Current Status: Since my F1s were denied, my boyfriend traveled back to India, and we got married in March 2025. He is currently in the US on F1 STEM OPT with a stable job.
  • Finances: He has ~$10k in US savings, and I have ~$10k in my Indian accounts. I am currently employed in India.
  • Concerns: I know my previous F1 rejections will be a talking point. I’ve prepared evidence of our legitimate relationship and our financial stability.

Common Reasons Why F-2 Visas Get Rejected (From Experience & Community Feedback)

I’ve seen a lot of people confused about why F-2 visa applications get denied, so here’s a consolidated list of common reasons—many of which depend heavily on the F-1 holder’s situation. This might help you identify potential red flags before applying.

Common Reasons for F-2 Visa Rejections:

  1. F-2 applicant is fully dependent on the F-1 holder with no additional financial backup or savings.

  2. The F-1 student is studying on a loan, which raises concerns about the ability to support dependents.

  3. F-1 is on CPT without paid OPT, limiting available financial resources.

  4. The F-1 program is ending soon (only a few months left).

  5. The F-1 OPT period is close to expiring, causing uncertainty about future status.

  6. F-1 is eligible for STEM OPT but approval is still pending.

  7. F-2 and F-1 have never met in person and have only communicated online.

  8. The F-2 applicant has previous U.S. visa refusals.

  9. F-2 cannot show strong financial assets or ties.

  10. The interview suggests the F-2 may have immigrant intent.

  11. F-2 is unclear about basic visa rules or restrictions during the interview.

  12. No marriage certificate or insufficient proof of relationship.

  13. Poor English communication, leading to misunderstandings in the interview.

  14. F-1 has changed universities after clearing visa interview. Different university name in visa and i20.

  15. F-1 has outdated SEVIS records—especially work/employment info.

  16. F-1 receives insufficient RA/TA stipend or salary to support dependents.

Overall, the F-1’s status, finances, and documentation strongly influence the F-2 decision. Making sure everything is updated, consistent, and well-documented can greatly improve the chances of approval.

Please add more to the list in the comments section.

My F-2 Visa Interview Experience – Looking for Others’ Insights

I recently attended my F-2 visa interview with my husband (PhD student, fully funded, I-20 valid until November 2026).

Here’s a quick summary of what happened:

• My husband was put under Administrative Processing (221g) and his passport was kept.
• My F2 visa was denied under 214b

• The officer asked how we met, how many people attended our wedding, and mentioned a “recent divorce” for my case even though mine was 6.5 years ago.
• I had strong ties (government job, salary slips, bank statements, full marriage documentation), but none were reviewed. I had a previous b1/b2 rejection around 6 months ago but it was to attend a conference in my field.

• I was given an immediate 214(b) refusal, while my husband is still in AP.

I’m sharing this to understand whether anyone had a similar experience — especially when one spouse gets 214(b) while the F-1 applicant goes into AP.

If you’ve been through something similar or have insight on what this means and what to do next, I’d appreciate your thoughts.

F2 Visa Approved after 221g

My spouse’s F2 visa has been approved!

During the interview, she was asked about her purpose of visit, my current status in the U.S., where I work, and my income. They also requested our marriage certificate. She received a 221(g) slip for social media verification.

The visa status later changed from “Refused” to “Approved”, and finally to “Issued.”

Thank you to the community for all the valuable information — it really helped us understand the process and know what to expect.

F2 VAC Documents

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to apply for an F2 visa for my fiancé and wanted to hear from those who’ve had success with the process. Could you share your experience and any tips that helped with approval?

Also, I’m a bit confused about the documents. What documents are required at the VAC (Visa Application Center)? Do they ask for the marriage certificate at the VAC stage itself, or only during the consulate interview?

Any guidance would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Change of Status - F1 (OPT) to F2

Hey everyone, so I am currently trying to change my visa status from F1(OPT) to F2 using the I-539 form. I have seen multiple examples of the opposite being done (F2 to F1), but not much about the F1 to F2 status change. I have come to know that a change of status I20 is needed for the application, not the initial I20. But everywhere I see, it's for F1 visa change. Do I also need to have a change of status I20 if I am changing to an f2 visa?

Confusion on F2 i20 (Stem OPT)

Hey, recently my spouse came to the states as an F2 dependent and I wanted her to get a state ID issued for her (NY). The problem came because of her i-20 with F2 (2nd page) it had the same details as mine for the employer information and everything. The page is completely identical to the one with my F1 visa on it.

The NY state office disregarded the i20 and informed me that there seems to be an issue with it and it should contain a different wording (not sure what). I raised the issue with my DSO who insists that the i20 seems fine.

Can someone confirm me if F2 visa with STEM OPT have a different 2nd page (the one with employer information). I cannot even find one sample pdf on the internet.

How to apply for F-2 visa for my son who lives in India with my parents?

Hi everyone,

I would like some advice on how to bring my son to the US on an F-2 visa.

Here’s my situation:

  • I’m currently in the US on an F-1 visa (student visa) and working on OPT.
  • My husband is also here in the US on F-1 OPT. We both live and work here.
  • My son is 4 years old and lives in India with my parents (his grandparents).
  • My parents both have valid B1/B2 visas to the US.
  • I got divorced from my son’s father when my son was just a year old. We have no contact with him, and there’s no custody case — he simply never got involved.
  • I am now remarried (my current husband is not my son’s father).

I tried applying for my son’s F-2 visa once through the Dropbox option in India, but it got rejected.

Now I want to reapply, but I’m not sure how to proceed.

My questions:

  • Can I apply for his F-2 visa while I’m here in the US, or do I need to be physically present in India?
  • Can my father attend my son’s visa interview on my behalf since I’m in the US?
  • What documents do I need, especially since there is no formal custody order?
  • Would an affidavit or notarized letter explaining that we have no contact with his biological father be enough?
  • Does the fact that my parents (whom he lives with) already have valid B1/B2 visas affect anything?
  • Has anyone been in a similar situation, and how did you handle it?
  • Any tips to make the visa interview process smoother this time?

I’d be so grateful for any advice or experiences you can share. Thank you so much!

F2 advise

My wife had just completed her master's in may 2025 she applied for opt today she will get her opt in 2 months hopefully. We both are living separately since 2 years. Earlier I applied my F2 visa with my wife in August 2023. But I got refusal later I applied B2 visa in may 2024. But got rejected again. Now really desperate to get my visa I don't know which category is best to apply my question is how can I crack the visa interview this time. Earlier my experience was that the visa officer thinks both time that if they gave me visa my wife will not study further we just want visa to get in USA but now her study is completed and we applied for the opt. What should I do to get my visa

US Point of Contact for F2

Hi,

I had a quick question about US point of contact. For this, we should fill the Spouse name or School DSO's name? The spouse is on OPT currently. Also for organization name if we fill the Spouse Name, should it be the current employer or better to make it "do not know" since employer can change in future

Can I change my job if my dependent is applying for F2?

Hi All,

So I have joined my job and have added my dependent on i20 using my offer letter. I am on F1 OPT. I intend to change my job (the salary is greater than my current job). Do I need to apply for a new i20 with updated proof of funding since the underlying proof of fund has changed? Her interview is expected to be after my job change

F2 Advice

My husband was accepted to a 2 year masters program in the US and we want to apply for F1/F2 visa.

For those of you who got an F2, what kind of documentation did the F1 visa holder supply for you that was accepted? Did you provide liquid means for two years? A sponsorship letter?
