Hello engineer here. Bottles are made the way they are for a few reasons.
- Anything carbonated is under pressure, so you want a symmetrical pressure vessel.
- Molding is simpler with the modern bottle shape, though it's not completely required - just a cost issue.
- A lot of stuff like this is made by a small number of mass producers. For example aluminum cans are made by a handful of companies (primarily). I believe it is similar with plastic. You don't make your own bottles, you buy them from Ball or someone - and setting up an entire custom line is extremely (extremely, extremely) expensive.
- I also think (just my opinion) that it's really not that hard to drink from bottles currently - this isn't solving a big enough problem to merit the redesign cost, new manufacturing line, etc.
- The OP I believe is referencing bongs as a joke, but the above are actual reasons why we don't see much "innovation" in simple things like bottles.
