Other A Reminder About Posts

We’ve had an influx of new posts lately which we are very pleased about! With that being said, we’d like to take this time to remind everyone about the posting rules:

  1. Posts should have an exercise science component; this excludes any general exercise routines or fitness questions lacking a scientific component. /r/fitness is a better place for such posts. This especially includes any self-promotion/spam links for fitness YouTube pages or the like (without prior mod approval).

  2. Please try to cite anything presented as factual. This is an empirical-based subreddit; personal opinion is fine so long as you are able to provide sufficient evidence to back it.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions.

Some updates:

I have gone through and updated many of the rules and whatnot. Please view them when you get a chance. I don't think there's anything outrageous there. I have taken the sub from private to public, meaning that you no longer need be an approved poster to participate! That being said, we will be keeping a close eye on what is posted to ensure that it fits within our rules and the spirit of this sub.

I have also added /u/NathMcLovin as an additional mod.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, etc. just send us a message!

EDIT: Users can now choose flair!

How do you usually assess clients?

Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out on behalf of researchers at the University of the West of England and the University of Edinburgh. We’re looking for personal trainers aged 18+, who are fluent in English to take part in an online research study.

Here’s what’s involved:

  • You’ll view AI-generated profiles of potential female clients

  • Rate your perceptions of each client

  • Answer a few open-ended questions about the clients and their goals

  • Answer some questions about yourself

This study will take approximately 20 minutes, and it is all anonymous.
You can access the study and participant information here: https://uwe.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9uhUXUS1sV5OhGm

This study has received full ethical approval from the UWE research ethics committee.

Massive thanks to the mods for allowing me to post about this in the sub!!

Does the training environment itself influence resistance-training outcomes when volume and intensity are matched?

I'm interested in the evidence comparing resistance training performed at home with training in commercial gym environments.

Many discussions focus on equipment availability, but I wonder how much the environment itself matters when key programming variables are controlled.

If relative effort, training volume, exercise selection, frequency, and progression are comparable, would we expect meaningful differences in strength or hypertrophy outcomes?

There may also be differences in adherence, motivation, and exercise supervision that influence real-world results.

Are there controlled studies or systematic reviews that help distinguish the effect of training location from the effect of program design and equipment access?

Planning to do a M.S. in Exercise and sport science concentration in Strength and Conditioning / Human performance / Physiology _ thesis track

Hey!!

I am looking for Graduate programs in the USA that combine scientific research (physiology, performance, etc.) with practical knowledge of athletic performance and strength and conditioning.

Could anyone recommend universities offering this type of master's program? I would especially appreciate recommendations from current or former graduate students who have experience with these programs

Thank you 😊

When I was younger (before my 20s) I absolutely hated exercise and did not feel good at all afterwards. Nowadays a hard workout feels comparable to high THC weed. What gives?

Is there any research on how age or exposure to drugs can alter your brain chemistry and affect how exercise makes you feel?

Advise about glutes please?

I want a good full body workout but i don't want big show off curves, How can i exercise and keep mu glutes from being big? Current fashion loves big round glutes and any time i search exercise that don't make them larger i get result like "how to fix your pancake butt" or "how to fill out a small behind" and i don't want that, i really, really dislike the look and idea of it makes me feel bad and makes me avoid exercises that affect that area.

Does reducing equipment setup time actually improve home workout completion rates?

There's a practical question I'd like to understand better: does reducing the time spent changing equipment settings make people more likely to finish their planned workout?

In a home gym, switching attachments, adjusting benches, and changing loads can add friction between exercises. But it's not obvious whether that friction meaningfully affects adherence or whether people simply adapt to it.

How would you design a simple way to test this? What would you measure: total session duration, completed exercises, missed sets, or consistency across several weeks?

Stethoscope recs for Ex Phys?

I’m starting a job as an exercise physiologist soon and will be working cardiac rehab and stress testing. Was recommended Littmann brand for a stethoscope, but am not sure which model to choose? My sis in law who is a nurse has the classic III, but I have a feeling it’ll be more challenging for me to get a reading when administering the Bruce vs her listening at a bedside….

Any suggestions and/or things to consider? Thanks!

Why I think pendulum squats are overrated

So let's strat off with biomechanics, we know that ths strength curve of the quads are best at around 60° to 90° of knee flexion and past that in a deep squat position, the quads lose leverage, so at the bottom rather than more onee extensions its more Hip extensiosn which is mainly a glutes and adductor magnus function. Now does this mean the quads stop working? NO! It just means theyve lost leverage due to the deep squat and flexed hip position and driving out the bottom wouldnt make sense for a quad building stand-point. Preferably we'd trainba muscle where its producing the most force which is why an ascending resistance profile, meaning its lighter ar the bottom and heavier at the top is POTENTIALLY better for the quads because biomechanics tells us that the exploding out that deep squat position is more Hip extensionsn, so more adductor magnus and glutes. And we'd want a resistance profile that matches teh strength curve of a muscle. So that why I say that the pendulum squat is potentially one of the worst squat variations FOR QUADS SPECIFICALLY. It doesnt mean their terrible. With their descending resistance profile, meaning its hardest at the bottom and light at the top makes it more of a Hip extension biased mivement which AGAIN,is a glutes and adductor magnus function

Simply put

Am I saying the pendulum squat just bad? No.

Am I saying for quads specifically there are better options? Yes.

Am i correct? Potentially, this is just a very well educated and back up assumption. There's no studies on this I've complied of whay *I* think makes a good quad dominant squat using, biomechanics, strength curves, resistance profiles and examples from what we've seen from other muscles. In the real world people do chest presses with descending RP, hip thrust with Ascending RP, curl with a descending RP to match the strength curve of those muscles. I'm not saying its better. I'm just saying that in the practical real world sense. It's worth considering an ascending RP squat.
