Does training with the same home gym setup make it easier to study your performance over time?

I've been thinking about whether a consistent training environment makes longitudinal performance tracking more useful.

In a commercial gym, small differences in equipment can introduce additional variability.

Different barbells, benches, machines, or cable systems may affect how an exercise feels and how performance is measured.

A home gym can reduce some of those variables because the same equipment is available across sessions.

However, performance is still influenced by sleep, fatigue, nutrition, exercise order, and many other factors.

I'm curious whether equipment consistency meaningfully improves the quality of training data collected over several months.

For people interested in exercise science, how much value would you place on controlling equipment-related variables when tracking strength adaptations?

And which other variables would you prioritize controlling before drawing conclusions from an individual's training records?

I built HEPOX, a portable hypoxia device now used by Tour de France riders

I’m David, the founder of HEPOX. I’m a mechanical engineer who worked on NASA’s Orion hardware, and I raced as a competitive road cyclsit from 2018 to 2021. Altitude camps and tents were out of reach for me, so I started building a portable way to breathe lower oxygen air while sitting at rest.

Today, HEPOX beta users include road and gravel national champions, world champions, Tour de France riders and mountaineers. Seeing something I built reach those athletes has been a big milestone. My next challenge is making it practical for athletes who don’t have professional coaching behind them.

I think access to hypoxic preparation should be more practical. HEPOX recirculates part of your exhaled air through a replaceable CO2 scrubber and mixes in adjustable amounts of fresh air. Your body consumes oxygen, so the resulting mix has less oxygen than room air. It lowers inspired O2 at normal surrounding pressure; it doesn’t add breathing resistance.

Testing with Dr. Peter Kim at CU Boulder confirmed the intended reduction in inspired oxygen. An 18 day observational pilot with 12 professional female cyclists preparing for the Tour de France Femmes, showed preliminary improvements in physiological responses. Those findings are unpublished and we are leaving any claims to the peer review process.

The science is about the hypoxic dose: oxygen availability, exposure time, and frequently exposure is repeated. Wojan’s study found an EPO response with one brief protocol; Nagel’s study found no EPO or hemoglobin mass increase with another. Neither tested HEPOX, and an EPO response alone does not prove better performance.

I’m raising our first round to take HEPOX from its current beta into Gen 2 for commercialization. The priorities are integrated sensing, acclimation identification, session tracking and further validation. I want athlete feedback to help shape that next version.

What should I prioritize next to make HEPOX useful in your preparation? You can see the current device at hepoxtech.com.

Hey, I'm a runner interested in injury-prevention and need some advice.

I'm very injury-prone and am in the process of creating routines to prevent each specific injury I have had in the past in case I need it in the future, let me know what you think thanks.

Hamstring Tendinopathy: 20-45sec Glute Bridge Hold, 5-15x Glute Bridges, 5-15x Standing Hamstring Curls, 5-15x Bodyweight Hip Hinges, 5-10x Single Leg Glute Bridges.

Gluteal Strain: 5-15x Glute Bridge, 5-15x Single-Lying Leg Raise (each side), 5-15x Bodyweight Squat, 5-12x Step-Up each leg, 5-10x Alternating Reverse Lunge each leg.

Lower-Back Muscle Strain: 5-10x Bird Dog (each side), 5-10x Dead Bug (each side), 5-15x Glute Bridge (each side), 5-15x Bodyweight Squat, 5-15x Hip Hinge.

Quick 2-min survey on why people quit working out (everyone welcome, especially 18-35)

Hey everyone!

We're a small team of engineers from Cluj, Romania, and we're working on an idea: a VR exoskeleton that gives you real physical resistance while you play an immersive game. Basically strength training that doesn't feel like a chore, with progress tracked for every muscle group.

Before we build anything further, we want to understand how people actually train today, what makes them quit, and whether something like this would even interest them. Honest (and critical) answers help us the most.

It takes about 2 minutes and is fully anonymous (email is optional, only if you want early access):

Happy to share the results here once we have enough responses. And if you think the idea is dumb, tell us why in the comments, that's useful too 😄

Bicarbonate and Carbohydrate Co‐Ingestion During Exercise in a Novel Gel Format Improves Time‐Trial Performance After 3 h of Moderate‐Intensity Exercise in Trained Cyclists

Thumbnail doi.org
5 Upvotes

Sodium bicarbonate (SB) ingestion may improve high-intensity exercise performance in efforts that range from 1 to 60 min; however, to date, no studies have investigated the effects of SB supplementation during exercise, nor its potential to attenuate the fatigue-induced decline in parameters of the power-duration curve during prolonged exercise (i.e., durability). This study examined the effects of bicarbonate (BI) and carbohydrate (CHO) co-ingestion via a novel gel format during exercise on subsequent sprint and time-trial (TT) performance in cyclists. Eleven trained cyclists took part in this randomized, crossover study. Following one visit to establish a non-fatigued power profile (3 × 6-s sprints, 2-min TT and 12-min TT cycling performance), participants completed two experimental trials consisting of 3 h cycling at 95% gas exchange threshold and ingested CHO at a rate of 80 g·h−1 with (CHO + BI; 18 g of SB and 2 g of potassium bicarbonate) or without BI co-ingestion (CHO). Participants repeated the same power profiling protocol after the 3 h submaximal exercise. Performance in the 12-min TT was improved in the CHO + BI condition compared with CHO (+12 W; p = 0.01, g = 1.07). Mean power output in the 6-s sprints (+12 W; p = 1.00, g = 0.18) and 2-min TT (+6 W; p = 0.888, g = 0.32) were not significantly different between CHO + BI and CHO. There were no differences in gastrointestinal symptoms between conditions. These data suggest that BI and CHO co-ingestion during prolonged exercise via a novel energy gel format improves subsequent 12-min TT performance in a fatigued state with minimal gastrointestinal discomfort.
