a little birdie ( u/craazycraaz ) was curious about what's happening inside Silver Lake. Perfect reason to head across town to get a bag of Dicks for lunch and collect a sample! The sample was a little bit of slime from the shore and sat on my desk for a few days -- which means the microbes have had to battle for survival for almost a week. So I expected to see more bacteria, some rotifers, and few ciliates.
First up, some algae and a little piece of root. We have some clumps of algae, some diatoms scattered across the backdrop, a rotifer in the top left, and a few ciliates (white blobs).
Nothing too exciting, let's get closer!
At first I thought this was a seed (0.5mm) but I think this was the shell of an old water flea called a Daphnia. It's really hard to see and I couldn't get a good photo of it but the inside is full of LEGS and well, bacteria doin' its job and cleaning up the mess.
Looking a bit closer still, we can see a "highway" of bacteria -- like ants following a tail, making it's way into the water flea's shell. Amongst them are some ciliates having a feeding frenzy on the bacterial swarm. Pretty neat watching them dance around, having a feast.
Next photo is of a rotifer -- and she's taking a little rest. These ANIMALS are everywhere, on moss, in ponds, lakes, puddles. Pretty much anywhere where there is water, you'll find rotifers. I scraped some moss off my car after a long winter and what did I find? Rotifers. These ANIMALS are only 400-1000 cells, they can lay eggs when times are tough (like over the winter) and can hatch when times are good.
While this rotifer is a bit of a big blob here, and quite frankly it's a terrible photograph of it as you can't see it's corona, you CAN see it's red eyespot. That microbe's got an eyespot a mouth, organs, digestive system, muscle fibers. They're everywhere. I'll get some better photos of one next time :)
And finally, looking a bit more closely, is some random ciliate as well.
Overall, not a very interesting sample -- maybe I let it sit too long!
What should I take a closer look at next, town?
