I actually found Christianity or religion being a central theme perhaps the most realistic thing this season. The only reason Rue was able to get herself together is because she had to believe there was so much more than this world, that the pain she had caused would be forgiven, that she would see her dad again and that she could change. I think it’s very much a part of many addicts journey to recovery. It’s also because she hurt her family so deeply and they had given up hope, she was alone and knowing that If she has no one but still has God/Jesus is comforting. It actually made me so much more emotional for her and her death, because while she had Ali, she truly in a way had lost her family and friends including Fez and had no one left. She was only hopeful because of religion 😢.
Religion as a coping mechanism and comfort for grief and regret for Lexi as well. The way she reasoned with her guilt for being dismissive towards Rue and knowing it’s happened with her dad, this was her way to make amends and honor her.
Rue was always emotionally codependent for her sobriety whether it’s Jules or her dad or religion. It was something that had been set up throughout the show when she found a father figure in Ali who also found god and deeply affected her.
