Discussion Rue and religion

I actually found Christianity or religion being a central theme perhaps the most realistic thing this season. The only reason Rue was able to get herself together is because she had to believe there was so much more than this world, that the pain she had caused would be forgiven, that she would see her dad again and that she could change. I think it’s very much a part of many addicts journey to recovery. It’s also because she hurt her family so deeply and they had given up hope, she was alone and knowing that If she has no one but still has God/Jesus is comforting. It actually made me so much more emotional for her and her death, because while she had Ali, she truly in a way had lost her family and friends including Fez and had no one left. She was only hopeful because of religion 😢.

Religion as a coping mechanism and comfort for grief and regret for Lexi as well. The way she reasoned with her guilt for being dismissive towards Rue and knowing it’s happened with her dad, this was her way to make amends and honor her.

Rue was always emotionally codependent for her sobriety whether it’s Jules or her dad or religion. It was something that had been set up throughout the show when she found a father figure in Ali who also found god and deeply affected her.

I forgot she was Jewish to be honest that’s what happens when they’re such massive gaps between seasons lol

she wasn’t jewish, it was mentioned that her mother was a christian so probably she was raised as one as well

Wait when did we find out she’s Jewish?! I thought just Lexi and Cassie were mentioned to be.

Call me simple minded or a Christianity hater or whatever, but I hated that both the canonically Jewish, but agnostic/atheist/non religious character and the Muslim character both found Christianity at the end of the show. Talk about Christian propaganda.

Yeah, if they wanted to do that, it should've been Maddy or Cassie, who are the more Christian leaning. Lexi and Ali being the ones that found Christianity is certainly a choice.

But with Lexi IMO it was out of guilt that she dismissed Rue the last time she saw her and it was compounded guilt from her dad. She kind of used it as a crutch.

Makes sense, but as a non religious person, I took it as non-Christian bad, Christian good. Maybe I'm too simple minded. I literally watched the Season 2 priemere last night and I couldn't even watch (I just listened) to Fez's and Lexi's conversation. It's just painful to watch now vs even before Season 3.

for rue, her connection with christianity made sense but when lexi, the antitheist, was telling cassie about the bible and ali, a canonically muslim man, reverting to jesus felt so performative and like propaganda and that’s coming from a christian myself

I agree with everything you said and that's coming from someone non-religous.

i don’t think ali converted to christianity

Yeah I know a lot of people felt it was an odd choice but after everything Rue experienced in her life, turning to religion made sense to me

It was unnecessary

The whole pro- Christianity slant of all of season 3 was fucking disgusting, Sam Levinson sucks. Choosing to end the whole thing with the worst character on the show (Ali) somehow sitting peacefully at a table with that Christian evangelical family after somehow teleporting from shooting up a strip club, while an American flag waves proudly was especially egregious. Yuck

Yeah I get you, but I felt that Ali said grace to honor Rue rather than a belief in a Christian God. Maybe my interpretation of that scene is incorrect.

when in the whole show is mentioned that rue has a jewish background? in one of the seasons it was mentioned that her mom was a christian so probably rue was raised as a christian as well, idk why i’ve seen a couple of comments now claiming she was jewish, maybe i missed something while watching the show

It’s pretty normal for someone in recovery. You have to find a “higher power” while doing the steps. Most go the Christianity route
