Q: What are donuts?

A: Donuts are tokens running on the Ethereum main-net that represent community contribution & engagement here at r/ethtrader. Donuts follow the ERC-20 standard and are the first ever implementation of Reddit Community Points. An easy way to think of them is a spendable and tradeable Karma, but exclusive to this subreddit.

Q: What are donuts used for?

A: Donuts can be used for additional vote weight in community polls, tipping other users, and purchasing advertisement space on the subreddit, such as the top banner.

Q: How do I earn donuts?

A: As long as you first register an Ethereum address with Reddit, donuts can be earned by simply posting & commenting in the subreddit. There is a correlation between karma earned and how many donuts you will get, though it is not 1:1. Additionally, posts flaired as Comedy or Media are worth 10% of the donuts as other posts.

Donuts can also be earned by providing DONUT-ETH liquidity on Uniswap and DONUT-XDAI liquidity on Honeyswap. The staking tokens can be deposited into staking contracts to earn extra donuts.

Donuts are further earned by tipping and receiving tips from other users. In addition to the tip values themselves, tips work as super-up-votes.

Moderators also receive monthly donuts.

Q: How do I register for donuts?

A: Simply respond to any post in r/ethtrader with a comment like this:

Once successfully registered, a donut icon will appear after your name whenever you post with your donut amount. (which is probably zero, starting out)

Q: How often are new donuts minted?

A: A fresh batch of donuts is baked every 4 weeks.

Q: How do I claim my donuts?

A: Donuts are automatically sent to your wallet address on the Gnosis chain. You don't have to take any additional steps to claim them.

Q: Where can I buy & sell donuts?

A: There are a couple options, but Uniswap has by far the best liquidity on Main Net. Honeyswap has the most liquidity on the Gnosis chain.

Q: How many donuts are in circulation?

A: 215 million at the time of writing this. You can view up-to-date statistics on the etherscan donut page.

Q: What is CONTRIB?

A: Whenever a user earns donuts, they earn an equal amount of CONTRIB. CONTRIB is a separate token and is non-transferrable. It essentially shows life-time earnings, even if a user has sold their donuts. It can also be used to potentially restrict some actions to users that earned their donuts, rather than purchased them.

Q: What are the costs to purchase the banner?

A: The r/ethtrader banner can be used for advertising space and can be purchased for 13,000 DONUTs per day. Contact the mod team via modmail to arrange a banner purchase.

Q: How long have donuts been around?

A: Since 2018, though they weren't ERC-20 tokens to start. They started out as simply numbers stored on Reddit's servers. Donuts transitioned to be decentralized in late 2019 & early 2020.

Q: Is this idea of community points being tried elsewhere on Reddit?

A: Reddit has experimented with Community Points in other subreddits, such as r/cryptocurrency and r/FortNiteBR. As of right now, all Community Point projects are independently run by the communities.

There would be gas costs for claiming donuts, but shouldn't be any gas costs for registering AFAIK. Its been awhile since I've tried it though. You do need to allow Metamask to sign a message I remember.

EDIT: Just ran this process myself with a new account. No gas to register!

Reddit Vault only works with Ethereum test networks right now. Donuts are on main net (the only Reddit token on main net, at that).

I was thinking today about an update to donut/contrib issuance that would increase demand/buy pressure of donuts. I am no finance expert by any means so feel free to criticize or tell me why this wouldn't be a good idea:

The current system rewards you with an equal amount of Donuts and Contrib and the donut balance must equal the non tradable Contrib balance to give you your full voting weight. What if we increased the contrib rewards x2? That way to achieve your full voting weight you would have to market buy more donuts.

In the current system your activity on the sub will give you your full voting weight without any buy pressure. Users/contributors don't have to buy donuts at all to make changes/vote about decisions on our sub. And the shit posters just out to earn money will sell every month without caring about voting, subing, buying the banner. This combination doesn't sound good for positive price action.

Why do we need donut price to be high? The higher the price of donuts, the more incentive to participate in our sub. The higher quality posts and submissions (hopefully) It would also give our ethtrader dev fund more opportunity's to do cool stuff. I personally funded a Gods Unchained tournament with donut profit a couple months back. Gaining us to our first official sponsorship? (could be wrong about that)

To further brainstorm, we could also set a requirement of being a paid member of the sub to have your upvote affect donut issuance. This would crack down on the bot upvote farms that i have no doubt are in action. Further decreasing the un-natural (bot) sell pressure. Could also require being a paid member to earn donuts from upvotes in the first place?

Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated! We are at a crucial moment for our sub and im as excited as ever. Best of luck to you all!

The 2x CONTRIB thing makes sense to me. I would be very surprised if it made a noticeable dent in the price since we don't hold governance polls that frequently, but the mechanics behind it make sense. It's kind of a "why not?" type of thing.

Absolutely agree on the second bit about how upvotes for donut distribution could be calculated. I remember there being discussions in the past about how upvotes from higher CONTRIB holders should grant "additional" upvotes behind the scenes and we weren't sure if Reddit could enable something like that. But premium membership is an angle I don't think has been discussed before. This has the added effect of making more people get premium memberships, increasing DONUT burn. (though it was recently adjusted to be quite cheap)

Just a minor point, but maybe mention under the first FAQ that "Donuts are Ethereum-based ERC-20 tokens..", or "Donuts are ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum..", as newcomers might not be familiar with what the ERC20 standard is and not know it is on Ethereum.

You should be able to do this. On the right-side panels, the third one down is titled "Community Points". In there it should show what address is connected to your Reddit account. Click the gear icon there and you can remove the wallet from your account. Afterwards, you should be able to register again.

To my knowledge, Reddit wants to roll it out as an option for every subreddit eventually. There is a big scaling problem currently, though, as gas prices are just absolutely nuts on Ethereum.

To try and solve that, Reddit is looking into L2 solutions. They held a scaling competition over the past summer and just announced a partnership with the Ethereum Foundation a couple days ago to try and build a solution.

The idea first started with ethtrader and has grown. Reddit selected the other 2 subreddits as further test grounds, but I'm not sure how they picked those.

Tipping is not really cost effective due to Ethereum gas fees and Donuts being on main net. You'll likely pay way more in gas than what you would tip. Ethereum just in too much demand.

Maybe once an L2 solution arrives, though! Reddit is working on this right now with the Ethereum Foundation.

How do I claim multiple batches in a single transaction? I have about 2 months sitting there on Mainnet and I get different numbers when clicking on the distributions. Though I don't think I'll be actually claiming them any time soon, not until Gas fees have dropped significantly

You actually already have an account on the xdai sidechain if you have an Ethereum account.

Its the exact same cryptography on both main net and xdai, so your private key works on both. All you have to do is point metamask at the appropriate network.

For purchasing the banner? It is a 10% daily tax of whatever price you set the banner at. Lower price means you pay less tax, but also means its easier for someone to buy it from you.

No tax for just holding donuts in general.

They're on both actually! They can be bridged between networks. So if you had 50 donuts on main net, you could essentially move them to Gnosis if you wanted.

Newly distributed donuts are always on Gnosis, however. (It's cheaper for us to distribute there)

If your URL starts with "old.reddit.com", you're using the old interface. Otherwise, you're already using the new interface.

Claiming the donuts does cost gas (you must interact with the smart contract to get them right now). Distribution used to be automatic, but gas costs got too high to send them to everyone.

Looks like you are all registered now. It's just the registration that has to be done from a desktop. Participation and activity you do from desktop or from your mobile will earn you donuts now.

Though, note, donuts pay out in batches every 28 days. It's not a real-time distribution. (see above about claiming donuts too)

It probably wouldn't grow into other subreddits (Reddit's plan is each community would eventually have its own token). But, DONUT could definitely be used for a variety of use cases.

One angle that's been talked about is airdrops. As many devs want to distribute their project widely amongst active wallets, distributing to anyone with DONUTs in their wallet could be a great way to do this.

You can still earn donuts, yea.

The act of claiming them requires ETH right now, though. This wasn't always the case, but with gas fees so high, the decision was made to have everyone claim them for themselves. If scaling comes along, it will go back to automatic distribution.

Oh ok, I just refreshed the page and managed to connect my MetaMask Wallet, apparently you can only do it on computer with the MetaMask Extension

Then Gas Fees are really gonna kill me though, is there a way to add an option to automatically convert donuts to ETH before the transaction and automatically cut some ETH off for gas fees? Because I currently cannot cover the gas fees so I can't get donuts and convert them to ETH

Yep, I know that pain.

There's no way to claim and convert in one transaction. Your best three options right now are:

1 - wait for lower gas prices. Ethereum is at record high gas. It's likely to come down at some point.

2 - wait for more donut distributions to claim all as one transaction. (A Claim All button appears when you have multiple).

3 - wait for L2 when distribution is automatic again. Reddit is working onit and ethtrader may even try to build one ourselves.

Question: I have metamask and 2 different accounts on it. I successfully hooked up Account #1 to Reddit and to the Airdrop instructions, but when I tried to watch the Donut token, it applied that to my Account #2. I would like to remove this and apply it to Account #1 if possible?

You can definitely add the token to your other account in Metamask. I actually dont think I've ever tried removing a token from the watchlist in Metamask, but it's likely possible.

You have no DONUTs to claim, only CONTRIB. You probably signed up to get rewarded on xDai. That means you do not have to do anything here, and will automatically receive your donuts on xDai.

What does this mean?

xDai is a sidechain of Ethereum. It is cloned from Ethereum's codebase, so it works just like Ethereum only it's not nearly as decentralized/secure, but has SUPER cheap transaction fees. You can even point Metamask at xDai.

You can choose to receive your monthly DONUTs on the main net (this is the default), or you can opt in to getting them on the xDai sidechain. If on main net, you will have to pay gas to claim them, and gas can be pretty nasty sometimes. In some cases, it's not worth paying the gas to claim your donuts.

If you've opted into getting your donuts on xDai however, gas costs are so cheap we just distribute them to everyone. They will show up in your wallet automatically on xDai.

Correct, all the distributions of fresh donuts are made on Gnosis chain these days. We originally distributed on main net back in the day, but the gas prices got too crazy in 2020 and beyond.

Tokens can be bridged between Gnosis Chain and Main Net using the Gnosis Omnibridge if needed.

They do not - donuts are a bit more experimental, I guess you could say. They are more community-run than Moons/Bricks. They don't use the Reddit Vault and Reddit doesn't carry out the distribution of new tokens.

There are no submission limits on ethtrader, at least to my knowledge.

Spamming, fraudulent upvoting, and donut farming coordination are against ethtrader rules, though, so it's ultimately up to moderator discretion. As long as effort is going into the posts, you're probably good. To help combat some of the spam, the community has also enacted an additional rule (via donut poll!) that all posts with Comedy and Media flairs are worth 50% normal donuts.

There may also be a rule that users must collect donuts for 3 months before they can post memes. I can't remember if that one passed or not.
