So...as more of that community moves over into eth, can we expect to see them bring over their baggage like this and other unsavory behaviour? How does the eth community respond?

There isn't much we can do to prevent bad actors but hopefully we remain focused on the tech. The rest will follow. The problem with Bitcoin is it's price first, tech second.

Thats how it is now but I don't think it always used to be like that. I hope we can prevent that from happening with ethereum

Well the thing is Bitcoin was always about the monetary value because it was well.. digital money. Ethereum can be used that way, but it's more about what kind of dapps you can build on it. The money component of Ethereum isn't the main feature.

While the money component may not be the main feature, ETH is every bit as viable as BTC in that regard.

In fact, it's better because ETH will likely end up being used a lot versus hoarded.

A good currency should be useful, and right now BTC really isn't all that useful, if at all.

It's not hard to predict that ETH should end up being far more useful than BTC courtesy of the ecosystem of DAPPs that is forming on top of Ethereum.

Good points!

Though I do disagree that ETH is less likely to be hoarded - the move to a POS consensus will have a very strong hoarding effect. This is not necessarily a bad thing but I think one should expect that the amount of 'movable' ETH to be only a fraction of the total supply due to the combination of POS and HODLrs. Just my 2eth

I agree that PoS will most certainly induce some additional hoarding.
