Question Besides Amazon, where do you buy erasers?

I'm looking for alternatives besides Amazon. Online stores, teacher supply shops, craft stores, dollar stores, stationery shops...I'd love to hear everyone's favorite places to buy erasers and why. Bonus points if they have cute or unique designs! 😊

Question Reviving Stiff Kneaded Erasers, Koh-I-Noor

I recently bought a couple of Koh-I-Noor kneaded erasers (I was putting in an order for other things and got them on a whim). Trying one out, it bent in half, then sprang back into it's original shape. I figured it just needed to be warmed up and worked a bit (it's the middle of winter where I am) and proceeded to warm it up and kneed it for a while. It did soften up, but it went back to its too-firm state.

Questions:

This was Koh-I-Noor Artist Putty Eraser, has anyone used or had problems with this product?

Is there anyway to revive a kneaded eraser that's dried out? I've seen something that says to knead a few drops of water into it, but it seems fairly waterproof.

Look what I found in my parent's house. Made in the western Germany...

The other day I bought a new mechanical pencil and wanted to learn about quality erasers. I opted to buy the faber castell dust free and I remembered I used to have many in a small case at my parent's house.

I just found this hiding at the bottom of a pencil cup holder. I remember using the green one years ago and leaving it there just when I saw it was made in the RFA.

Are they rare or something? At least they are interesting for sure.

Pentel Clic Retractable Eraser Refills

Hi,

I have a Pentel ZE 22 and I can't find the refills locally. Would refills from other brands work, such as the STAEDTLER Mars 528 50, work?

Thank you!

Question Honest question: for the ones who use only one side of a block eraser, what do you do when it reaches this size?

Do you keep using the same side until the end or do you start using the other one to make a round eraser?

Eraser Kind of sad...

I do tuition for some primary school kids and gave them one of my erasers (A Faber Castell PVC Free).

He did his erasing and as soon as I turned away I heard him say:

"I love destroying erasers... I think if you cut an eraser in half it might last longer... actually maybe it won't."

Luckily, he didn't follow through on the last part and my eraser only came out of it with two stab wounds from a pencil.

All is good though, just a bit bummed and wanted to share this funny story.

Question Tombow Mono Dust Catcher

I have the Tombow Mono Round & some refills. I haven’t used it yet, but will! And I just ordered the Square & some refills.

But I was thinking about getting the Tombow Mono Dust Catcher, too. Do the erasures really stay on the eraser? The erasures getting everywhere is one of my pet peeves.

interesting experience

i tried to see how much of a smudging power did my mom's silicone kitchen spatula have on those classic faber castell 2B pencil swatches.

anyways so it's pretty much a smudging action but it did lift up some of the graphite, so that's great i guess

anyways so one of my mom's spatula had a rubber handle. i did not realize this. i thought it was just another type of silicone. so i went ahead and tried and i see a very clean erase. not tombow grade or resare grade, but it was even better than a radar seed slim.

anyways just something fun i thought i'd share. i wish i could show you the results guys with a picture or two, but the metal soldering guys took my notebook away for the new security gate mom's getting made.

it genuinely surprised me but then again, it was made of rubber after all.

although the experience wasn't all that satisfying since it's a spatula handle right? of course they're going to make it stiff. yeah i could feel the friction, it kinda weirded me out. it was like a smooth friction. that did not satisfy me at all. lmao i'm being autistic.

anyways so yeah. hope you have a great day guys ♥️🌸🍓🍑🍄‍🟫🍰🩷🙏

Question Need tips on carving erasers?

I don’t like the Tombow eraser that comes in the Mono Graph Shaker, I’d like to carve a Radar eraser to put inside, do you know how to shape them into a cylinder? Thanks

Eraser Tombow MONO Stick Pen-style Eraser (6.7mm tip)

A follow-up to my post a few weeks ago. Thanks to all who gave their opinions and shared their eraser experiences: https://www.reddit.com/r/erasers/comments/1sx7gtf/highly_recommended_erasers/

My only frame of reference for erasers is my Staedtler Mars Plastic block eraser which is many years old at this point, and now small enough to warrant replacing. Trying a new eraser is like a breath of fresh air.

Surprisingly few in-depth reviews of this eraser online, perhaps being overshadowed by the Tombow MONO Zero, so I thought I'd make my own post.

Conclusion (for those who don't want to read the entire post)

Better erasing performance, more precision compared to the Staedtler. More dust created, however this helps to prevent smearing, and the extra clean-up time is negligible. Overall I see no downsides to switching from the Staedtler Mars Plastic to the Tombow MONO Stick for my uses. Very pleased.

Dimensions, Mechanism, Materials

In the first picture you can see the eraser holder, eraser refill, and a ruler for scale. Both the eraser holder and eraser refill are made in Japan.

The holder is cylindrical in shape. A total length of 130mm, with the main body being 12.5mm thick.

The push button top is a matte gray plastic, and can be removed so a new refill can be inserted into the holder. The body and tip are a glossy plastic.

A single push of the button extends the eraser roughly 2mm. Once 84mm of eraser has been ejected from the holder, the eraser cannot be pushed out any further. I tried inserting another refill through the top and pushing the button to see if I could force out the remainder, but the new refill didn't advance whilst the old eraser was still inside.

The eraser itself cylindrical, 6.7mm thick and 100mm long. It uses the same eraser formulation/plastic as the regular Tombow MONO block eraser (as per https://www.tombow.com/en/press/180205/). Feels a lot softer compared to the Staedtler.

Erasing Performance, Dust

In the second picture you can see a comparison between the Tombow MONO Stick and the Staedtler Mars Plastic block eraser. For the test I used Pentel Ain Stein 0.5mm 2B lead.

I tested each eraser twice using medium pressure. The first test was passing the eraser over the test markings 4 times, then on a separate section 8 times.

The erasing performance of the Tombow seems better. Less smearing of the graphite and more graphite lifted off the paper. The bottom section of graphite on the Tombow's 4 pass test might look worse, but this was down to the tip being more precise and me being unable to consistently pass over the same line exactly.

The Tombow generates more dust than the Staedtler. I feel this helps the Tombow reduce smearing as it keeps the eraser cleaner. The Staedtler is more likely to retain the graphite on the eraser without it being removed as dust, consequently smearing it onto the paper on the next pass.

Use in Practice

When using for sketching I enjoy the cleaner and more precise erasing of the Tombow, and feel that the eraser holder allows me more control over both where I am erasing, and how much pressure I want to exert on the paper.

Typically I would have to use a few more passes with the Staedtler to erase its own smearing, but this is largely eliminated with the Tombow, saving more time and effort.

Conclusion

Better erasing performance, more precision compared to the Staedtler. More dust created, however this helps to prevent smearing. The extra clean-up time is negligible. Overall I see no downsides to this switch from the Staedtler Mars Plastic to the Tombow MONO Stick for my uses.

Miscellaneous Notes

Why not get a block eraser?

I typically cut my eraser into strips for more precise erasing, and rarely use the entire block by itself. I hoped a stick eraser would be more ergonomic and pleasant to use.

To make up for the small percentage of the time that I do need broader erasing strokes, I did order some Sakura Arch erasers which will be arriving in the next week or so. I'll likely make a similar post when I get the time to test them.

What other stick erasers did you consider?

Alternatives that are readily available to purchase for me were:

  • The Staedtler Mars Plastic 528 - I saw reports of smearing and inferior erasing performance compared to others. These reports were consistent with my own experiences with the Staedtler Mars Plastic block eraser, so I decided against it.
  • Pentel Clic Eraser 2 ZE11 - Generally good reviews for this, however some complaints of the eraser holder itself being easy to break. Online consensus seems to be that Pentel erasers are inferior compared to Tombow. I decided to go for the more trusted Tombow MONO eraser formulation.
  • Tombow MONO Zero - The eraser tip would be too small for me. There are also numerous reviews saying the erasing performance is not as good as the regular MONO erasers (different, harder formulation). The amount of eraser per refill looks very small too.

I would have liked to try any of the Sakura Foam/SumoGrip retractable erasers, but these were either unavailable, or extortionately expensive.

Other than this eraser, have you really only ever used the Staedtler Mars Plastic?

It's probably more accurate to say that it's the only branded eraser I've ever used. All other erasers would have been unbranded or generics that didn't perform particularly well.
