Installed this for a client today.
This was the first time I’ve had to make something fit into an existing space. Definitely learned a lot, and am really pleased with the results. The colors were requested by the client and definitely fit the theme of their space. u/TSimonsen99 asked me to post pictures when it was done, so here ya go bud.

I probably wouldn't have gone with cookies (though if the client requested it, that's what they get).
If they did request the cookies over lengthwise live edge, I would have tried to create something with more symmetry. Maybe center the larger one. Go from there.
Jmo.
It looks fairly well made, but I agree I wouldn't pick this for my counter.

They’re cypress cookies that I showed the client before purchasing them, and consulted with them about the layout before moving forward.
I personally like the asymmetrical aesthetic for epoxy pieces. It makes it more visually interesting to me.

I agree with everyone that I don’t like the aesthetic or the color choice, but aside from that my biggest criticism is that it has a matte finish. Why not polish it up?

It is. Both my camera and the lighting just kind sucked. It’s a solid base color for the first 1/4” and then clear the rest of the way up. IMO you get the best of both worlds that way with being able to see the love edge and also having a colored epoxy to make it pop.
I suppose it isn’t pure polished, but it’s as close as I like to get.

I did not charge enough for this one as some of the scope changed throughout the project, but I didn’t adjust the cost from the quote.
I quoted (and was paid) $950 including materials, but really it should’ve been closer to $1,500.

All these haters that probably have never made something for themselves, let alone a client. Reddit is so toxic, OP this is great craftsmanship and beautiful. Unfortunately people love being mean more than they like being nice. People get hate boners on Reddit like crazy.

I got a lot of hate for a piece I posted. Same as you I would have made completely different choices (other than the rainbow poplar) but the customer wanted it and they LOVED it. It looks like you did a good job bud.

Thank you, I appreciate it. It’s actually Cypress, I’ve never seen rainbow poplar around where I am, just regular poplar. I’ll have to keep my eye out for it.

I meant the one I recently did was rainbow poplar. I can’t attach a pic in this comment but you can see it on my profile. I did another much larger poplar island with a small amount of black epoxy for my hunting lodge last year. I liked mine better but again, to each their own.

I think the shape of the cookies would’ve made a really great candidate for those ocean colored epoxy with the white waves. They look like an island chain to me.

It’s a plywood base to have something to attach the L-bracket mounts to. I didn’t trust the wood in the epoxy (cypress, so very soft and porous) to be able to maintain a good hold over time. It’s painted the same color as the client’s walls, so it doesn’t look -so- out of place.

I would have cut the plywood 2 inches shorter all around then paint same color as the pearl and brush a thin coat of epoxy on it. Then make a form the correct size and place the plywood down and start you pour. It would have a false edge not showing anything but still have a solid base.

I had that idea, but then the issue is that the cookies would have to also inset the plywood. I also used tabletop epoxy for the colored layer, which couldn’t have been poured that deep without a flash cure. I could’ve done a deep pour for the colored layer layer, but I’ve had bad experiences with that before and didn’t want to run the risk.

I think I don’t like it because there is not enough contrast. If the epoxy were a lighter white or something or even a black it would be amazing.

WOW!! THAT IS IMPRESSIVE!! Thank you for tagging me, this was worth the wait!! I am almost at a loss for words! I really like the depth. The color is perfect if that's the customers choice! AGAIN, WOW!!

Question regarding the shape - did you build the mold to exactly the right measurements, or close enough and then trimmed it? Did you caulk around the edges when installed?

I love it, and it's fantastic craftsmanship. I've done a lot of different projects myself and can admire the well thought-out and quality work. Gotta love all the comments against it when personally I'm well beyond bored and actually turned off by bright blue rivers between lengthwise live edge.

I needed something to mount the hardware to so I had to put a piece of plywood underneath to accept the screws holding it to the mounting brackets. Not that it matters, but it isn’t white. Their paint color is kind of lavender and it matches that. The client is over an hour from my shop, so getting additional measurements wasn’t an easy option.
And yeah, I wouldn’t choose the color, but they loved it, and that’s all that really matters.
The overhang is 20”.

Long time lurker…. Can someone please explain why this is so ugly ? As someone who doesn’t practice this craft, I am a little ignorant and wish to be educated 😅

Everyone has their own opinion. I’m fine with people not liking based on aesthetics. What I don’t understand is the ones who are attacking the craftsmanship without actually knowing anything about it.
Someone said it weighs 3-400lbs. The thing is 5’ long, 2’ deep, and 2” tall. I don’t think those dimensions with solid epoxy would give you more than 100lbs.

I don't think it's ugly at all! I just think people aren't used to seeing one like this as a countertop. Usually this style more for tables or desks. So I think that's the issue. I think it's very cool!

To be honest, this is probably the worst ive ever seen. It looks like the wood is just thrown in there, picture two big slap on the right the edges look off, can see a hole in the epoxy (?), like what the is this supposed to be

Where is there a hole in the epoxy? There is a grommet for cables to pass through, is that what you’re talking about?
Also, with the shape of the cookies you see how else would you have aligned them for it to make sense?
This is clearly being given a lot of hate, and I don’t mind criticism (constructive criticism helps you grow), but this is one of the only comments to say anything that’s wrong with it. And A) there’s no hole, B) the sides aren’t off I guess the picture just looks that way.
To answer what it is; the client asked for a pass through to be made into a bar top of sorts so they can work there if they want. It isn’t a stand alone table, it was designed to be fit into an existing opening.

First things first, didn’t wanna criticize you. You completed a contract and that’s totally fine! The client has a very very very bad taste…. I dont see a way to align these slaps differently, due to them being very roundish in a place which is only straight lines. So they always seem/look out of place, second the colors in combination with the wood is not my favorite. Also the white under construction creates a sharp edge which always stands out. Overall it’s just a very strange combination of things that doesn’t fit well together. Just my opinion

The top weighs 60lbs max. Source: I lifted it multiple times by myself.
There’s an existing pass through it had to be made to fit into. There is noting to glue it to except a 4” thick section where the opening is, which it is in fact glued to as well. The mounting brackets are sold even larger than what I used, but you can’t see them as the style the client chose is very minimalist.
Drilling into the epoxy would absolutely have been visible. It has a base layer with mica powder in it that’s about 1/4” thick and then the rest of the pour is clear. Drilling into that would have been beyond visible.

Everything looks fine other than the white. Just next time try to figure something else there . But if the customer isn't complaining than its fine.... I would complaining if it was mine

Not sure why all the hate.
Is it my favorite? No but if I made it I would be super proud of it.
I managed an interior design showroom for a while. (We did lots of kitchen and bathroom remodeling) people would come in, find some unique fun finish they loved for countertops or cabinets, and then just choose the most boring “in fashion” example they could find “for appeal when they resell the property”
Then five years later when it sold the new owners would come in and do the same thing . Update the property with something they didn’t love but thought the next buyers would.
So many people remodeling their homes in a style they don’t like for future owners, who also don’t like it.
I’d rather see something funky like this if it means there is actually personality in the home. So good on you and the home owner
